I just got a Full update in and take a look at Chicago, Illinois jumping into the top 10 snowiest cities. I’ll have to take a look back but I can’t remember Chicago ever being in the top 10 since we started the contest unless it was maybe in the very beginning of the snow season. Better yet they knocked Anchorage, Alaska out of the top 10. Who would have ever thought that would happen? Right now Chicago is camping out in the #7 slot on the snow mountain. Chicago’s normal snowfall to date should be 16.9 inches, right now they are at 45.4 inches on the season. This time last season they had a snow total of 1.3 inches. Chicago is only a handful of inches away from having 4 feet of snow more than this time last season. Chicago, Chicago, Way to Go Chicago ;)

Now let’s talk about the snow storm that hit a good part of the eastern coast yesterday and is just about out to sea now. Several cities have climbed up the Golden Snow Globe snow mountain this last update but there is still more climbing to do. Most of the new snowfall is from yesterday so we will still have a lot of snow to add to cities like Boston, Worcester, Mass and some of the other cities I’m sure. Plus, Some of the cities weren’t updated for the fact that NOAA is having some problems with the website so I couldn’t get to them. The only cities that may effect the top ten (Until Boston & Worcester snow stats come in) that I can see is Grand Rapids which is showing MM and means that any new snow wasn’t updated for yesterday and Ann Arbor, Michigan. There is a chance that both could jump a spot.

Here are the stand out cities from the storm so far that broke date records. BTW, my brother lives in Philly and shovels a couple of his older neighbors driveways for them. I just talked to him and he said he will be shoveling all day. Kind of feels good today living in snowless Syracuse, New York ;)

* Philadelphia, PA reported 13.5 inches of snow yesterday breaking the date record of 3.4 inches of snow set way back in 1917.

* Central Park in NYC – 11.0 inches breaking the date record of 6.0 inches going back to 2001

* Newark, NJ – 10.0 inches of snow breaking the date record of 4.5 inches set in 2011

* Cincinnati – 5.3 inches beating the old record of 3.8 set in 2007

* Baltimore, Maryland – 5.1 inches setting a new date record of 2.0 set in 1982

* Washington DC – 3.8 inches of new snowfall breaking the record of 3.5 set in 1982

I’ll be doing another update of some sort when the new stats come out later to see what Boston, Worcester and a couple of the other cities have to report for today. Stay Tuned and have a Great Day All!!

I just got off the phone with my brother in Philly not too long ago and he said it was coming down pretty good. He guessed about 5-6 inches of snow so far. I’ve been watching the radar and started thinking that this could get interesting by the time the storm pulls out.

I don’t see any of the cities catching Erie, PA right now but this new snow storm may bring several more cities within striking distance of the top cities, perhaps just another storm or two away from getting to the top of the snow mountain. I’m seeing expected snow totals by the end of tomorrow for places like Boston, Mass, Philadelphia, PA and other cities anywhere in the 8 – 16 inch range along with the possibility of blizzard conditions in some areas.

What I don’t like is that it is missing us here in Syracuse and in most of NY and I don’t think Erie is suppose to see much either. The storm seems to be moving slower than expected and also seems to be holding on to the same direction, Northwest staying over some of the cities like Philly. Take a slow moving storm that is covering a lot of area and staying on the same path and we could be seeing some decent snow totals come tomorrow.

That said, keep in mind I am not a meteorologist and normally don’t have a clue so if you are in the cities getting hit by this snow storm check with the PROS, your local meteorologists and the National Weather Service. Those are the folks who know their stuff ;)

I’m going to try and get a full update done in a little while or should I say when the stats start coming out. Most of the snow stats right now are still from yesterday so I am going to hang on until NOAA starts posting some of the snow stats from the snow that has fallen so far today. Stay Tuned :)

I was able to get a full update in today and there was a little bit of movement in the top 10 snowiest city lineup. Sioux Falls, South Dakota has once again fallen out of the top 10 being replaced by Salt Lake City, Utah who had some decent snow since the last update setting a date record. Salt Lake City picked up 6.9 inches of new snow yesterday breaking the date record of 5.2 inches which dates back to 1951. Welcome back to the top 10 snowiest cities Salt Lake City ;)

Erie continues to dominate this seasons snow contest and continues to hold the crown so far as the King of the Snow Mountain. Erie still has over a oot of snow lead in the contest. The question is, can they hold on to it until the end of the season? I think a better question would be when will Erie give up the top spot on the snow mountain ;) I believe it’s way too early for any of the snowiest big cities in the US to hold a lead right through the season but you never know.

Speaking of how early it is in the snow season winter hasn’t even arrived yet. It’s pretty impressive that some of the Golden Snow Globe cities have had the amount of snow they have had so far before Winter even begins which is tomorrow. Winter Solstice which has the shortest daylight of the year and longest darkness starts tomorrow afternoon, Saturday December 21st at 12:11 EST, eastern standard time. When the kids were little I use to always bring them to the window or take them outside to wave and say “Goodbye Fall, Hello Winter” :) Ok. I still do it every year when I happen to remember the time ;)

The good news is that we start gaining sunlight time from there on with the daylight getting longer and the darkness getting shorter :) A minute here and a minute there starts to add up after awhile and before you know it Spring will be right around the corner. Of course before that happens a lot of us will have to probably deal with a hundred inches or more of new snow.

This weeks movers were Boston and Worcester, Mass and Bridgeport, Connecticut.  Boston climbed up 24 spots on the snow mountain while Worcester and Bridgeport both climbed about 12 spots.  WTG!

With Christmas coming up fast it’s going to be hit and miss here at goldensnowglobe.com.   I will be getting some top 10 updates in though during the holiday season and hopefully at least one or two full updates.  I like to see how all of the cities are doing just as much as you all do.

It took awhile this year for the Christmas spirit to kick in for me but it finally did yesterday which means I have a ton of catching up to do on all of my Christmas stuff :(   Only four days left for me to finish shopping, decorating and of course baking my Christmas cookies :)   Yes I bake!  I have been a bachelor for quite awhile off and on so I pretty much do it all now.  I do have great family though and my sisters and other relatives do take care of me with some nice cookie trays also for Christmas ;)

Have an Awesome Weekend Everyone!

The cold air has finally hit quite a few of the states now but it’s still the Colorado cities taking control of the national snow contest. Remember, only cities with a population of 100,000 or more are on the list.

Fort Collins, Colorado jumped ahead of Lakewood to take the top spot in the snowiest city in the US but only by a couple of snowflakes. Being the beginning of the snow season that’s about all that any of the cities are showing right now is just a few flakes here and there. A few things did stand out this last update though. Erie, Pa is now on the snowboard, Anchorage, Alaska still doesn’t have any measurable snow and a lot more cities are showing at least a trace of snow compared to the last update.

Anchorage normally would be leading right about now averaging 9.6 inches for this time in the season. Right now they are only showing a trace and aren’t even in the top 10. Remember they have been the only city since we started keeping stats to dethrone Syracuse, NY as the snowiest US city. I’m still in the process of moving but what will be cool is when I get hooked up and start watching one of my favorite shows, Gold Rush Alaska, I/We already know that they are going to have a lot better start this season and shouldn’t have to move a ton of snow before they start digging for gold ;)

Then there is that pesty Erie, Pa and I say that affectionately toward those of you from Erie :) Erie made the snow contest fun last season and were one of a couple of cities who came just inches away from taking the glory and bragging rights away from Syracuse, NY, My hometown just in case you didn’t know. Well Erie is on the snowboard now with a few tenths of an inch of snow and as always they are one of the cities that always worry me along with Worcester, Anchorage and a couple others. They should make it fun again for the new 2013 – 2014 snow season.

Another thing that caught my attention was that as of the last update we only had 12 cities showing any measurable snow or at least a trace of snow. This update we have 36 cities with at least a trace or more. I think we may be seeing a lot of lead changes this season and as always the bragging rights to snowiest big city in the US are up for grabs.

Just a heads up that we are going to be dropping a few cities out of the lineup in the next several days. It’s obvious that some of the cities don’t have a chance and we would like to get it down to around 40 – 50 cities. If you want to defend why your city should be listed here then now s the time. I’ve left a few in just because it was interesting to see that cities like Albuquerque, NM do get some snow each season but it’s getting a little too time consuming each update. I think the first 2 cities we need to drop is Worcester, Mass and Erie :) Joking of course! That said if you know of a city that isn’t listed but gets some decent snow and they are not on here then feel free to let us know. Keep in mind the population needs to be at least 100,000 as of the last census.

OK, enough for now and you all Have a Super Night and as always, “See Snow – Drive Slow” unless on a sled of course ;)

I kind of just want to just yell out NOOOOOOOOO but that isn’t going to stop the snow from coming and over taking the warm summer and fall days that seem to have just flied by like the snow will be flying sometime really soon :( Yup, here we go again and the contest has actually already begun. I took a peak around and sure enough some of the cities have some measurable snowfall totals and it’s mainly the Colorado cities. They were the ones who stretched the national snow contest out last season and go figure they want to get a jump start this season..

The snow contest for the 2012 – 2013 snow season was one of the closest and most exciting contest since we started up the national snow site. As always we had to wait for some of the Colorado cities before we could call it but it was a great snow race right to the end between Erie, Pa, Worcester, Mass, Syracuse, New York and some of the cities from Colorado who made a late charge at the end.

A lot of back and forth between Erie, Worcester and Syracuse but Syracuse, NY was able to get some late snow, I think about a foot if my memory serves me right (it normally doesn’t so beware) to jump into the lead and take claim to the snowiest big city for the 2012 – 2013 season. Congrats to Syracuse and all of the other cities who hung tough till the end. It was a fun snow season :)

I’ll be checking some stats tonight and hope to get at least a top 10 update in and maybe more tonight. Hey, it’s been awhile and I have to remember how to this stuff again. Hopefully NOAA, the National Weather Service hasn’t made too many changes in the off season.

Have a Great Snowy Season All and Stay Safe ;)   As Always, See Snow Drive Slow!

Congratulations Syracuse, NY, the new King of the Snow Mountain…  Here it is 90 degrees in Syracuse, New York and I’m finally calling the snow contest a wrap.  Syracuse has regained the title of snowiest big city in the country (pop 100,000) once again.  After last seasons embarrassing finish of 7th place with just 50.6 inches and being blown away by last years snow champ Anchorage, Alaska who had a snow total of 134.5 Syracuse managed to pull off a very close snow race between several cities this season.  For the 2012 – 2013 snow season Syracuse was able to win with a total of 115.4 inches, even though being just shy of their average snowfall of around 123.8 inches.

Some of the tough competition came from Erie, Pa, Worcester, MA, Anchorage and a strong finish by Lakewood, Colorado.  The Colorado cities got off to a slow start but were one of the reasons the snow contest went this late in the season.  For some reason this season just didn’t want to end and Lakewood, CO ended up jumping from #18 on the list to #5.  To be honest with the late snowfall this season even  now I feel a little uncomfortable calling it.  15 of the cities in the contest had some measurable snow in May and several others had at least a trace.

Syracuse was lucky that they were able to pick up something like 12 inches of snow in April that managed to miss Erie, PA and Worcester, MA to pull off a come from behind King of the Snow Mountain victory.  Several times toward the end it looked like either Erie or Worcester were going to take the crown.  I thought this season was one of the most fun ones to date because of the different lead changes right to the end.  Great job to both Worcester and Erie and I have a feeling they will be in the running again come next season.

I think normally I call the contest around May 15th when it seems like the snow is done for the season in cities in Colorado, Nebraska and a couple others.  This season I was watching the Colorado cities slowly move up the line-up and was too big of a sissy man to call it too early.  Hey, it’s been a whacky snow season when a lot of cities are still getting snow in May.  Not unheard of but I’m sure a few of them may have set a record for latest snow received.  Fort Collins picked up 12.9 inches of snow in May.  Below are some of the other Golden Snow Globe cities that pick up measurable snow in May.

Fort Collins, CO — 12.9 inches in May
Lakewood, CO —-  8.0
Des Moines, Iowa – 6.9
Denver, Colorado – 3.4
Omaha, Nebraska – 3.1
Lincoln, Nebraska – 2.7
Independence, Mo – 2.0
Colorado Springs — 1.8
Sioux Falls, SD — 1.5
Springfield, Mo —- 1.4
Anchorage, AK —- 1.3
Saint. Paul, MN — 0.6
Pueblo, CO —— 0.6
Kansas City, MO – 0.5
Minneapolis, MN – 0.5

That about sums it up for a fun 2012 – 2013 snow season and like I said it was a fun one.  We got to meet a lot of new people from different cities in the contest.  The season went right down until the end which made it even more fun.  I’ll be popping in every now and then throughout the summer to see what’s going on.  We hope all of you have a safe and fun filled Summer with what ever kind of weather it is you like.  Me, I’ll take 70 and sunny.  Have a great one All!

Not a whole lot of changes this last update which included all of the cities. Most of the snowiest cities were pretty much snow-less since the last update but with the way this snow season has gone so far it’s still too early to crown a winner in my opinion.

A few of the Colorado cities are getting some snow but I think the city to keep an eye on right now is Anchorage. Once again this season they are over their normal snowfall totals and it seems every time I check their snow stats they have more snow to add. They are still in striking distance along with Erie, PA and Worcester, MA.

The warm air was suppose to show up in the Syracuse area this week but that never happened. I didn’t look to see if Erie has gotten into the warm air yet. To sum it up I think as long as the cold air is sticking around any of the top 4 cities can keep adding to their totals. I’ll be getting the updates in as I see the snow falling and Good Luck to the cities near the top ;)

Have a Great Week Everyone :)

The new snow stats have finally come in and we have a new leader for the first time in awhile. Syracuse was able to tap into the Lake Effect snow this time round and managed to break the old record for todays date 4/2 picking up 10.5 inches of the white fluffy gold breaking the old date record of 1.4 set back in 1991.  They may have a shot at breaking their snow totals record for the month of April which I believe is 16.4 back in 1983 if it continues for a day or two.

Here is an article that came out today by Sean Kirst who is a great journalist for the Post Standard and Syracuse.com in the Syracuse and surrounding areas about the national snow contest.

Now it is up to Erie and Worcester to catch Syracuse, the new king of the snow mountain. Both cities were reporting just a trace this last update which included just the top 3 cities. Here in Da’Cuse it’s been light snow most of the day but it looks like one of the lake effect bands are just starting to kick in again as it’s coming down pretty good.

I have to say that this season has been the most exciting and closest one that I can remember since the snow contest started :) Let’s go Erie and Worcester, keep it close to the end. I’ll try and get a full or at least a top 10 update done in the next day or two.

Have a GREAT Week All!!

First Off a Happy Easter to You and Your Family From Ours :)

Erie, Pa managed to slip past Syracuse while I wasn’t paying attention. Now they are only 4.2 inches away from catching up to the snow leader Worcester, MA. Erie picked up a 1.3 inch lead over Syracuse where it has actually been sunny the last day or two.

I did just a top 20 update today and I’ll be keeping an eye on the weather and posting new totals throughout the week.

HAVE a HAPPY EASTER ALL!

Worcester continues to defend their top spot as the King of the mountain but can they stay there? Syracuse and Erie are still running flake to flake and it seems every time Syracuse tries to spread a little snow between them Erie just blows them off and closes the snow gap even tighter.

Right now Worcester’s snow lead is only 5.5 inches over Syracuse and just 5.7 inches over Erie, PA. The last couple of days here in the Syracuse area have been pretty sunny unfortunately or fortunately depending on how much you like or hate snow. Erie on the other hand has been able to pick up a few inches of fresh snow. Luckily for both cities Worcester is quiet as far as snow goes for the time being.

I’m not throwing in the shovel just yet but if I were a betting man I think I would lay the odds right now at:

Erie, PA 2 to 1
Worcester, MA 3 to 1
Syracuse, NY 3 to 1

Just a hunch. Have a Super Week Everyone ;)
