Anchorage, Alaska Starts Their 2016-2017 Snow Season

Anchorage, Alaska has received 2.6 inches of snow the last couple of days so far to start off their snow season. According to the National Weather Service.  The average snowfall to date for Anchorage is 5.6 inches.

I was able to get a full update in early today, Monday, for all of the other cities.  So far as of the last update, Billings and Anchorage are the only cities with any measurable snow for the 2016-2017 snow season.  Billings, Montana started off this season’s Golden Snow Globe contest with 3 inches of snow.  It will be interesting to see if Anchorage can slip past Billings and will be interesting to see if any other cities receive any measurable snow this week.

As of this last update, there are about 35 cities that are behind their average snowfall for today’s date. Meaning that on average about 35 of the big cities with a population of 100,000 or more have at least a tenth of snow at this time in the season.

Golden Snow Globe Winter Outlook Forecast Soon

I’m leaning toward a snowier than average season for most of the cities this season. Stay tuned for the long-awaited, highly anticipated Golden Snow Globe winter outlook forecast that will be coming soon. You know, the only forecast that is totally made up but is accurate about zero percent of the time. It’s coming soon :)

Billings, Montana Starts The Big City Snow Contest

Let the 2016-2017 snow games begin :) The National Weather Service is reporting as of the 4:00 PM update that Billings, Montana has received 3.0 inches of snow so far today, October 11th.

I have been watching the snow map that shows where it has been snowing the last week or so and checking some of the states that were showing a little snowfall the last couple of weeks. Sure enough, Billings is on the snow board as of today. I just noticed this as I was checking tonight and I was just able to get an update in also.

Billings Montana Only Big City With Snow

Right now it looks like Billings is the only city with measurable snow as of the last update by the NWS. I’ve been watching the snow move down to the US from Canada but up until today it has been missing the cities in the snow contest and has been hitting the higher elevations. Here is a link to the snow map which is worth taking a look at.

A Trace of Snow in Pueblo, Colorado Springs, and Omaha

Is anyone ready to get the snow season going yet? I’m guessing only a few of you with winter toys are ready but believe it or not some cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest are already showing a trace of snow. Hey, I’m just the messenger ;)

I figured I would do a reset of all of the snow stats from last season, the 2015-2016 snow season, after reading about a few of the smaller cities receiving measurable snowfall in parts of the US. I’m pretty sure this is the earliest I have ever done an update on the snow site since the Golden Snow Globe snow contest began back in the 2009-2010 season.

Anyways, none of the Big cities are showing measurable snowfall yet but there are a few cities that are showing a trace. Remember, measurable snow is a tenth of an inch or more. There are however several that are showing a trace of snow including a couple that I’m not too sure about but the National Weather Service is reporting it.

So far Omaha, Nebraska, Pueblo and Colorado Springs, Colorado are showing a trace of snow for the new 2016-2017 snow season. There are a few more that I am hesitant to add to the list right now. The new season starts on July 1st and ends on June 30th. Normally, I start looking at the cities sometime in October so if I don’t see any snow being reported chance are there won’t be an update for awhile :)

OK, believe it or not, El Paso, Texas is showing a trace of snow which I believe they (Supposedly) received on August 21st. The only problem I am having is that on Aug 21st, the high temp was 86 and the low 63. Does Hail count? Amarillo, TX, and Topeka, KS are also showing a trace of snow so far on the season.

A big WOW to seeing those stats in the NWS snow stats. Looking at the temps in El Paso around that time, hard to believe, so for now, I am going to leave them at zero and out of the contest for now. Hopefully, one of you more knowledgeable than me (Ha, like you exist, j/k :P ) can explain to me if I am wrong for leaving these cities out.

A Couple of Fun Snow Facts Per the National Weather Service

Here a few of the snow stats that caught my eye while doing this update.  This update was done on 9/8/2016

* Fort Collins, Colorado on average has 0.1 inches of snow this time in the season.

* Billings, Montana’s normal snowfall to date on average is 0.1 inches of snow.

* September 3rd, 1961 Denver. Co received 4.2 inches of snow which is the highest to date for this time of the season.

Enjoy the rest of the summer all and I’ll be seeing you all soon. Let’s hope not too soon, though ;)

Updated 2/10 7:00 PM – Erie marches back to the Top of the snow mountain into the number 1 spot. Congrats Erie, for now anyways ;)

I figured it was going to be kind of close looking at some snow stats a little earlier. I had a feeling Erie was going to get enough snow this morning and today to take the lead away from Lakewood, CO. The only thing I was concerned about was that I saw that Sioux Falls, SD was getting some snow and thought they may have had a shot at regaining the lead also in the snow contest ;)

Stay Tuned and it will be interesting as to which city will come out on top come tomorrow ;)

National Snowiest Big City In United States Contest

The Golden Snow Globe contest has really been starting to take shape the last week or two with many cities getting enough snow to have a shot at being the King of the Snow Mountain. The good news is that all of the Great Lakes are pretty much wide open which means Lake Effect snow for everyone :) Whether we like it or not there is still a lot of snow season left. Yeah, I know, be quiet huh ;)

With the Great Lakes having little ice on them compared to an average winter season this is a good chance for some of the cities further down the list to start their comeback. Cities like Buffalo, NY have a good chance to move up quite a bit this week and I am guessing they will… And where is Rochester, NY this season and a few others. It’s time to join the snowball fight and have some fun :)

Great Lakes Ice Cover 2/9/2016

Erie, PA which was the King of the snow mountain not too long ago picked up just enough snow to climb their way into the number 3 spot yesterday. Snow is in the forecast for the next several days for a lot of the Golden Snow Globe cities and it will be interesting to see if/when we have a new King of the mountain. I’m guessing sooner rather than later.

Lakewood, Colorado still holds the lead in the National snow contest for Big cities (population of 100,000+) but only by 1.7 inches over second place Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Erie, PA is in 3rd, Fort Collins, CO is in a tie for 4th place right now with Syracuse, New York.

Several of the cities along the great lakes are under lake effect snow watches or warnings now. With the Artic air that is expected to move into the Northeast and other places in the US no doubt, some decent snow will be falling the next several days. It’s going to be fun watching the cities slip and slide up and down the snow mountain :)

A lot of us have been paying attention to the cities around Lake Ontario and Lake Erie but I think it’s time to keep an eye on a couple of the cities around Lake Michigan which is still wide open. South Bend, Indiana and Flint, Michigan come to mind and both cities broke into the Top 10 this last update. I was checking out the radar a little while ago and it looks like Lake Michigan’s lake effect snow machines are cranking out snow in full force right now.

Stay Tuned and Stay Safe All. As always, if You See Snow – Drive Slow! Have a great day ;)

The Massettchusetts cities, Worcester, Boston and Lowell finally got some decent snow and Worcester was able to finally break into the Top 25 snowiest cities.

First as always, a Big Thanks to Sue B. for your kind donation to the site. They help out a ton to offset costs. It’s also the 1st donation of the new 2015-2016 snow season :) Thanks Sue, much appreciated!

Chicago 2nd in Snowiest Big City Contest – Snow Records Broken

Congrats to Chicago, Illinois on taking over the nuber 2 spot on the snow mountain. Chicago broke a couple of date records for total snowfall the last couple of days and slipped past several cities to take over 2nd place in the Golden SNow Globe national snow contest for Big cities. Several other cities also set some snowfall records yesterday as this current snowstorm moves to the east across the country. Some of the snow records set yesterday are posted below.

Anchorage, Alaska is still sitting pretty at the top of the snow mountain and seem to be adding to their snow totals everyday. What a difference a season makes. Anchorage has almost as much snow so far in the 2015-2016 snow season than they had for the entire 2014-2015 season. As of the last update Anchorage had 19.6 inches of snow. For all of last season Anchorage only had 25.1 inches of snow.

Chicago snowstorm

No doubt we are starting to crank up the 2015-2016 snow season and at last check we have 31 Big cities with a population of 100,000 or more setting up camp on the snow mountain. The list will keep growing as this current snow storm moves through and it will be interesting and fun to see what other cities join in on the fun. Maybe Erie, Buffalo and Rochester. It will also be fun to see if Chicago can hold on to 2nd place for awhile because the top of the snow mountain is getting pretty crowded after yesterday’s snow.

Some Cities That Set Date Snow Records for 11/20 & 11/21/2015

* Chicago 11/20, New Record 4.2 breaking the old record of 2.8 set in 1996

* Chicago 11/21 New Record 7.0 breaking the old snow total record for the date of 3.0 set back in 1893

* Detroit, Michigan – 11/21 New Record 6.0 inches of snow breaking the old snow record of 1.4 back in 1893

* Des Moines, Iowa 11/20 New Record 6.7 breaking the old record of 2.2 set back in 1956

* Rockford, Illinois – 11/20 New Record 4.9 beating the old of 2.4 set in 1964

* Rockford, Il – 11/21 New Record 3.9 inches beating the old record of 1.0 set in 2007

* Milwaukee, Wisconsin – 11/21 New Record 6.1 breaking the old of 1.2 set in 2007

* Lansing, Michigan – 11/21 New Record 8.2 inches breaking the old snow record of 3.5 set in 1928

* Fort Wayne, Indiana – 11/21 New Record 4.1 inches breaking the old snow record of 2.1 set in 1996

* Peoria, Illinois – 11/21 New Snow Record 4.6 inches breaking the old of 0.4 set in 1957

* Flint, Michigan – 11/21 New Record 10.0 inches breaking the old date record of 4.4 set in 1974

* Indianapolis, Indiana – 11/21 New Record 1.3 inches breaking the old of 0.8 set in 1996

* Springfield, Illinois – 11/21 New Snow Record 0.5 inches breaking the old of 0.2 set in 1950

The snow is still falling as it moves to the East so stay tuned and I will try to get another update in later on in the afternoon. Have a Great Day Everyone and as always SEE SNOWW – DRIVE SLOW ;)

Updated 4/24 5:30 PM – The new snow stats just came out for Syracuse and it looks like….. Maybe I’ll just leave it at that to keep everyone in suspense ;) OK, that would be mean! Worcester holds on for now and can keep camping out at the top of the Golden Snow Globe snow mountain. For now anyways ;)

—————————————-

Updated 4/24 1:00 PM – WTG Worcester on defending the top on the snow mountain yesterday. Worcester was able to hold off Syracuse, NY’s late season charge and still holds on to a 0.1 inch lead. Yup, just one tenth of an inch separates the two cities now in the Golden Snow Globe contest.

I’m hearing reports that Mother Nature sneezed over Syracuse a couple of times during the early morning hours so the next update will be really interesting. Will there be a new King of the Snow Mountain or can Worcester hold on to the top spot until the end of the snow season whenever that may be ;) I have a feeling that Syracuse may have gotten just enough snow to either take the lead or perhaps maybe even a tie which I think would be pretty cool :)

No doubt this has been the most exciting season since the National snow contest started up several seasons back. Stay Tuned for an update when the National Weather Service posts the new snow stats for today :)

Updated 4/23 5:20 PM - Syracuse is reporting 0.5 inches of new snow for a new total of 119.6 as of 5:00 PM. Worcester holds on for now by only one-tenth of an inch… STAY TUNED and YES I am loving this :)

Looking at the radar over the Syracuse area it looks like Lake Ontario is still putting out as I type..
————————–
We are just minutes away from finding out if Syracuse has melted away some of Worcester, MA’s lead. I know the anticipation is killing the folks in Worcester and Syracuse right now, myself included as we wait for the National Weather Service to update the new snow stats on their site. It has been snowing in Syracuse but was/is it enough to catch up to Worcester, MA or maybe even take the lead. Stay tuned because as soon as they come out I will be posting them right here.

Worcester had a slim lead over Syracuse, New York of just 6 tenths of an inch as of the end of yesterday, 4/22/2015. I’m seeing a couple of different new totals for Syracuse right now so as always I am going to be on the safe side and wait until the NWS posts the new totals on their website.

No new snow was being reported for Syracuse for yesterday so this next update which will be coming out in about half an hour will include any snow that fell after midnight and normally includes any snow that has fallen up until around 4:00 – 5:00 PM. I’m pretty sure that Worcester, Ma has no new snow to report for the fact that the good folks from Worcester that are in our FaceBook snow group seem to be a little anxious to see what Syracuse has to report this next update. Fell free to join the group, the conversation and the fun in our group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/861746940543642/

Erie, Erie, Erie, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha :) I know most of the talk here has been about Erie, Pa, last seasons King of the snow mountain and defending champs but they have had the lead for awhile now. Before Erie it was all about Grand Rapids, MI which held the lead for most of the first half of the 2014-2015 snow season. The good news is that Buffalo, NY and Worcester, MA are keeping the contest close and less than 7 inches separate the top 3 cities. Only a tenth of snow separates Buffalo and Worcester now for 2nd place.. The bad news is that the early snow season favorite Syracuse is almost 2 feet behind the current leader. The double bad news is that I pulled some cities like normal during the second half of the season.

I have been thinking about pulling some cities from the snow contest for a couple of weeks now. The first cities that came to mind were obviously Erie, Buffalo, Worcester and Grand Rapids ;)

Nothing against the cities I pulled but I’ve been getting a couple of updates in each day for a good part of the season and it’s a little too time consuming. In other words it’s pulling me away from my other websites which I count on to eat, lol :) No I don’t need a Wambulance and I’m not whining, I love doing this but between the 2 snow contests, doing research, updating and so on, a normal day is between 6-8 hours and normally more when the big storms hit. Again, I LOVE it but reality sets in :(

By pulling some of the cities which I will check from time to time to see how they are doing I can save a little bit of time. OK, That is my plea for forgiveness and hopefully none of the cities were yours. If one of them are and you will lose sleep over it then let me know and I’ll put the city back in ;) I did leave a couple in that most likely don’t have a chance for the fact that I know people from those cities visit the website on a daily basis. I also get emails every now and then from people serving overseas that check from time to time to see how their city is doing so those cities stay and hopefully I didn’t pull any of them.

I have done this for the past few years and again I do keep an eye on them to see if they should be added back in. Below are the cities that were pulled this time around and again, let me know if there is a problem ;)

St Paul, Minnesota – They have their Twin In it Still ;)
Washington DC – Done well previous seasons only 3.6 inches
Indianapolis, Indiana – Never liked them, I’M JOKING! Only 8.5 and Indiana well represented…
Boise, Idaho – Previously dropped & added back in a few weeks ago. Nothing since so dropped again..
Columbus, Ohio – Ohio is well represented already…
Amarillo, Texas – Cool that they received 17 inches but nothing since.
Pueblo, Colorado – The lowest snow totals of the Colorado cities in contest to date.
Salt Lake City, Utah – Normally a contender but only 6.8 inches on the season.

Feel free to flame away and have an awesome day everyone ;)

WOW, what a long couple of days it’s been crunching numbers, gathering stats and watching the snow storm on the radars and TV but it’s been a blast and it was all worth it :) To be honest I am also jealous.. Probably not quite as fun though for those in the storms path and hopefully everyone is doing OK and is safe!

Just think, about a week or so ago on 1/21 Worcester, Mass was in 27th place in the National Golden Snow Globe contest with 13.9 inches of snowfall for the 2014 – 2015 snow season. They now have 51.1 inches of snow on the season and counting. Boston, Massachusetts was in 45th place with only 5.5 inches of snow on the season and after this last update now have 31.4 inches. What a difference a week makes not to mention a snow storm that will go down in the weather history books and record books. WTG Worcester and Boston ;)

So far the cities that are in the Golden Snow Globe contest that stand out the most are Worcester, MA , Boston and Providence, RI. Below are the storm totals and as always keep in mind my fuzzy math shows up every now and then ;)

Winter Snow Storm Totals as of 4:00 PM 1/27

Worcester – 1/26 = 2.6, 1/27 = 28.4 as of 4 PM Storm Totals = 31 inches
Boston – 1/26 = 2.3, 1/27 = 18.5 as of 4 PM Storm Totals = 20.8 inches
Providence – 1/26 = 3.1, 1/27 = 14.2 as of 4 PM Storm Total = 17.3

A Few Snow Records For the Date That Were Set Today -

Worcester, Mass – 28.4 today breaking the old record of 11.0 set in 2011
Boston, Mass – 18.5 today breaking the old record of 8.8 set in 2011
Providence, RI 14.2 today breaking the old record of 6.7 set in 2011

Worcester has climbed the Golden Snow Globe mountain in record time pushing Syracuse, NY out of the number 4 slot on the mountain and bumping a whole lot of other cities down the snow mountain too. Worcester’s next targets are Grand Rapids and Buffalo ;)

Boston has managed to go from the number 45 slot all the way into the Top 10 at number 10. The thing is that I don’t think either of the cities are finished yet. Last I heard they are still adding to their snow totals. It’s going to get even more interesting when the next round of snow stats come out from the National Weather Service the next update.

I think Grand Rapids, Michigan should be a little worried right about now and maybe, just maybe those of you in Erie, Pa may want to watch your backs the next several hours because Worcester may be heading your way soon. Stay Tuned and Stay Safe All!

Have an Awesome Night!

1/7 11 AM – Put it in the snow books because it’s official now. Erie, Pennsylvania has taken the lead in the Golden Snow Globe National Snow Contest ;)

Erie, Pa slipped past Grand Rapids, MI when all of the snowflakes were tallied up at the end of the day yesterday. Right now only half an inch separates the two for the top spot on the snow mountain. Snow is predicted for a lot of the snowiest cities today so it should just keep getting better ;)

Grand Rapids actually took the lead away from defending Champs Erie right around November 18th so I guess this is payback and payback is a Batch, a batch of snow falling on Erie that is ;) WTG Erie and it will be interesting to see how long you can hold onto the lead.. So far there have been 5 lead changes from 4 different cities which are below.

Anchorage, Alaska – 10/20/2014 – 11/14/2014

South Bend, Indiana – 11/14/2014 – 11/15/2014

Erie, Pa 11/15/2014 – 11/18/2014

Grand Rapids, Michigan 11/18/2014 – 1/6/2015

Erie, Pa 1/6/2015 – Current Leader

Stay Tune for a late day update and drive careful everyone!
—————————————————–
1/7 2:00 AM - IMPORTANT - The new update was done at 2:00 am and not all of the cities were showing new snow stats at that time. Grand Rapids was reporting snow stats as was Erie, Pa. Erie has indeed slid past Grand Rapids with the snow totals that were being reported for yesterday. Come morning who knows ;)

Buffalo, NY and Billings, Montana were not showing new snow stats at 2 AM so both of those cities could take the lead. I will get another update in sometime in the morning (Late Morning) so stay tuned and Good Night ;)

First off, sorry about the lack of posts lately. I have been able to get a lot of updates in but with the Holidays and trying to keep up my shopping sites it’s been tough finding the time to blog. I have been able to get at least one update in each day and well lets face it, it’s been a pretty boring snow season so far except for those that had that those crazy amounts of snow just outside of the Buffalo area.

I just got a full update in and will try to get at least a Top 25 update in later. Billings, Montana has finally decided to play with us and join the snowball fight. They managed to move into the Top 5 this last update picking up 6 inches of snow since the last update. It will be interesting to see if they have more to add later in the day.

It’s looking like the cold air is getting ready to move in after this little warm up slips by today which hopefully means SNOW :) The Golden Snow Globe contest is really close and looking at the top 25 I think most of the cities that are in the top 25 still have a shot at winning this season. There is still a lot of snow season left whether you/we like it or not…

Grand Rapids has been the King of the Snow Mountain for just about the entire 2014 – 2015 snow season. I think they have held the lead since something like around November 17th when they pushed last seasons snow champs Erie, Pa down the mountain. So far every time one of the cities makes a move to the top of the mountain Grand Rapids has been able to pick up just enough snow to fend us off. WTG Grand Rapids but I think your days are numbered ;)

This week and probably starting tonight things should start getting interesting again with the colder air moving in. Hopefully it will get all of our Lake Effect Machines cranking up and get the snow contest cranking too. I was just thinking how early the snow started falling this season in a lot of places and then pretty much just slowed right down. I suppose the one good thing is it hasn’t been anywhere near as cold as it was last season when that Polar Vortex overstayed it’s welcome.

Have a Great Day All and Stay Tuned!
