Spokane, Washington Starts Up The Golden Snow Globe Snow Contest

Updated 10:00 PM – 9/29

Wow! Spokane, Washington broke two date records yesterday and today. Spokane set a record yesterday, 9/28 with 1.9 inches of snow and another record today, 9/29 with 3.1 inches being reported so far. That’s a pretty good start to the snow contest this early in the snow season. I’m impressed and it takes a lot to impress me ;) WTG Spokane!

Updated 9/28 – Say it isn’t snow! It is and Spokane, Washington is the 1st city, as far as I know, to receive measurable snowfall so far for the 2019-2020 snow season. WTG, Spokane.

There are at least 8 other cities that are reporting a trace of snow this season. The snow season runs from July 1st thru June 30th. Buffalo, NY was the snowiest Big city in the country last season beating out the favorite, Syracuse, NY by a few inches. It will be fun to see if Buffalo can defend their spot on top of the snow mountain.

I’ll have to check and see if any of the other cities have started the snow contest this early. After the way this summer has been, I think I am ready for a little bit of snow ;) It’s still in the where I am at and it’s getting really old. OK, it has been old for the last couple of months. Happy Fall everyone and before you know it we will have a Top 25 list.

I was updating the snow stats last night and noticed that Amarillo, Texas is under a blizzard warning. I’m thinking of the snow that the northeast has received so far or should I say lack of snow received and just thinking how crazy this snow season has been.

A blizzard warning issued for Amarillo, Texas

Record temperatures are/were being broken all over the eastern half of the United States while some of the cities to the west are and have been getting snow all season. Spokane Washington moved into second place after yesterdays update as they flew up the snow mountain the last week or so. Not so unusual for Spokane to get some good snowfall though.

What is pretty unusual is seeing cities like Albuquerque, New Mexico, Amarillo, Texas, Reno, Nevada and several other cities ahead of the northeast cities right now as far as snow totals go. They are ahead of cities such as Syracuse, New York which on average is the snowiest big city in the United states with a population of 100,000 or more. Ahead of Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY, Rochester, NY and Grand Rapids, Michigan which are some of the other snowiest big cities in the US. Crazy, Crazy, Crazy weather to say the least.

It looks like some colder air will finally be settling in sometime soon and may even stick around for awhile this time. It may be time to finally get the leaves raked up :)

Have a Great Weekend Everyone and as always – See Snow, Drive Slow.

I was just reading around and came across an article about a new snow storm brewing in the Rockies which may bring a lot of us some snowy weather. According to the article the Rockies and the Northwest US could be getting up to a foot of new snow the beginning of this weekend starting on Friday and going through the weekend.

The good news is, that is if you’re a snow lover of course, is that the cold artic air is suppose to move to the east and go as far as the Northeast so a lot of the Golden Snow Globe cities could also be seeing some snow come next week. Gonna be a long cold snowy 2013 – 2014 season it looks like ;)

From MSN – The new push of arctic air aimed at the United States will first hit a little farther west this time when compared to the last cold blast. However, the arctic air will still have eyes for the Plains, Midwest, Northeast and South next week.

It seems like every update the snow contest has a few more cities that close in on the leaders this season. This update was no different with Anchorage and Salt Lake City gaining with their recent snowfall. I did have to finally make a call to the the National Weather Service station that does the stats for Spokane and unfortunately those of you from Spokane are probably going to be mad at me :( Be nice, it’s not my call, show a little pity and NO I’m not trying to cook the books or in this case melt your snow away. OK, if you have to vent feel free to and I will try to take it like the sissy man that I am ;)

Here is the controversy to this seasons snow contest so far. The problem I have had with the Spokane, Washington snow stats is I didn’t notice at first that there are two places that report the snow for Spokane. One is at the Airport and the other is at the National Weather Service station. The place I have been reporting the snow totals from was the NWS station thinking they would be the more official stats. Turns out I was wrong and when I saw that there was another place in Spokane that reported their snow stats, the Airport I decided to call them and see which stats I should be using.

I called the Spokane National Weather Service and talked to Steven Van Horn, a really nice guy who was very informative about the locations in Spokane. I asked him which reports I should be using and he advised me that the snow stats from the airport are the official snow stats that they go by. Not the answer I wanted to hear for the fact that I have been giving Spokane the higher totals from the NWS station. Not what I wanted to hear but at least we have the right place to get the snow stats from now. The official snow stats! Thanks for taking the time and for the great information Steven.

With that said, Syracuse was able to stay on top of the snow mountain with less than a couple of inches separating them from second on the list, Salt Lake City, Utah. They managed to pick up enough snow to move up and even with the change for Spokane they managed to take the third place spot on the snow mountain. Last seasons champs, Anchorage moved up a few spots and let’s hope they don’t have a record season like they did last season or we all may be in trouble.

Buffalo received enough snow to get into the top 10 knocking Madison, Wisconsin out of the top 10. All in all this is a pretty close race with quite a few cities just a storm or two away from taking the lead. Let’s hope it stays this close right to the end.

Have a Super Week All and As Always – See Snow Drive Slow!

The big 3 from New York, Syracuse, Buffalo and Rochester climbed quite a ways up the snow mountain but Spokane, Washington had a few more flakes to take over the King of the Mountain spot from Anchorage. Way to go Spokane!!!

All of the cities are up to date and it’s looking like it will be a close and fun race to the end of the 2012 – 2013 snow season. That last storm that just passed through helped out the New York cities dropping about a foot of snow on them give or take a bit. Several of the other cities also were able to jump into storm Euclid. Anchorage was quiet since the last update which gave some of us a chance to catch up.

It will be interesting to see if Spokane can hold on to the crown come the next update. The losers this update I would have to say were the Twin Cities in which both of them dropped out of the top 10 this week.

Have an Awesome Weekend All and a Happy New Year :)

Colorado seems to be dominating the top 15 snowiest cities so far this season. It’s been snowing in Washington, Minnesota and Utah so they are all on the move now. Last years snow champ is finally on the snow mountain but barely :(

I think there is like 5 Colorado cities in the top 15 right now. The are Pueblo, Colorado Springs, Denver, Lakewood and Ft Collins which is in 2nd place on the snow mountain looking up at only Anchorage, Alaska. Keep in mind that last season most of the Colorado cities came in toward the bottom of the snowiest city list. With them off to a good start it’s another reason why I think this should be a close snow race this season.

A few of the other cities on the move right now are Minneapolis, Minnesota, Salt Lake City Utah and Spokane, Washington. Looking at their average snowfall for this time in the season, they should all be pretty good throwing the snowballs and beating the rest of us down the snow mountain. So far we have 36 cities with measurable snowfall for the 2011 – 2012 season and come December it should get really interesting.

Not much going on in snow champion city right now. As a matter of fact all of the Big 3 from New York are slacking. Syracuse managed to pick up just over half an inch of snow while Rochester shows 0.3 so far. Buffalo has still yet to get on the board but don’t worry about them, they always start off with something special it seems.

Warning – One of my Shameless website plugs :) This post i think I’ll push my Christmas Inflatables website. I took all of the products from something like 5 stores and have them all on one site. There are Walmart Inflatable Christmas Globes, a few Disney Christmas Inflatables and I think about 50 Christmas blowups all in all. A lot of new ones from Gemmy so Click here if you’re looking for some cool Christmas Inflatables and Blowups for your yard.

Hey Have a SUPER GREAT Week All!
