The Top 25 snowiest US cities over 100,000 and we will add them as we find them and as the new 2020 census becomes available..
The first number is the current spot the city is on the snow mountain last updated. The second number is where the city was at the end of the last season. We will be switching it to how the city started this season and then the current updated place as the cities receive snowfall totals.
This is where the Top Twenty Five Snowiest US Cities leading so far in the Golden Snow Globe Contest will be updated. Does your city have what it takes to stay in the top 25? All of the cities will be on a rolling system with only the top 25 snowiest cities here on the main page. That means that if your city is number 25 and another city passes yours, poof, your city is gone from this section. Can your city stay in the top twenty-five is the question? Our guess is that there will be some bouncing around especially at the beginning.

By the end of this week, where I live, in Minneapolis, is supposed to leapfrog over Allentown, Pennsylvania. I don’t think we’ll sneak up well enough to win, though. Good Luck Erie and Syracuse!

talk about a nail biter….a mere 2 inches separates my hometown Erie,PA from the sneaky Syracusians….for both cities that’s a “dusting” difference. My question….when does the contest end? I’m having chest pains…not from shoveling but from trying to hold on to the #1 spot…finally.

Mother nature is in control of when the snow contest ends and it’s not over until the fat man sings. Unfortunately this fat man didn’t sing until May 15th one year I think. It was a close season like this one and the Colorado cities were making a LATE charge up the snow mountain. It’s super close this season like it was last season where both Worcester and Erie had a lead over Syracuse but Syracuse got some freak storm or Lake effect snow, something like 10 inches to pull it off in April. Chances are that if it stays this close I’m thinking/hoping I’ll be singing before May 1st depending on the weather or as soon as Syracuse takes the lead
so keep the bottle of Nitro close by for a little longer 
It’s even closer thank you think. I just noticed that our seasonal number has been “revised” down by 1.1″ to 129.3″. The adjustment(s) must be before March 1st since the monthly total for March still shows 9.8″. So it’s Erie 129.3″, just a mere 0.7″ ahead of Syracuse at 128.6″.

The last I looked I saw that an inch was taken away from Erie. I noticed last week that an unexplained inch was added to Erie’s totals. I don’t know if it was a mistake last week or one toady but I guess we will see tomorrow 
I live in Erie pa with my husband and son. we are all ready for this snow to be over with. the storm today was pretty bad, and I couldn’t see more than a block away while driving home from school today around 1 pm. saw a tree fall onto a house due to the wind, a branch fall through a car windshield, an accident between a u haul and a car, a spin out on 79, and everyone was going 25 or under. the wind was weird. it felt like it was blowing in all different directions. including up. while brushing my car off, the wind blew the snow all the way up my coat, my shirt was soaked from the shoulders down underneath my winter coat. it was just a good day to not be out and about. but it will hopefully be spring soon
Not the kind of snow storms we like Becca. That heavy snow along with the strong winds almost makes it as bad as an ice storm with tress and power lines coming down. We caught a break in the Syracuse area where the winds didn’t really didn’t play much of a factor here. I’m glad all are OK though…
I live south of Erie near Edinboro right in the middle of the proverbial snowbelt. I can remember years with much more snow, but this winter has been colder than I can ever think of. In the late 70′s, snow was piled up so high along the roads that you could touch the power lines if you were so inclined. It was like driving down a tunnel.
just so we all know the record snow fall year for Erie was 2001 with 149″… not the 1970s. Everyone I work with seems to believe the 70s had “magical” snowfall that was 80ft high. This is referred to as a regressive bias in psychology. When you recall 30 years ago it felt worse than it was. If you look at the records for Summit, Edinborough and Erie there was nothing ever like that. If you combine average temperature with snowfall above 130″ probably top 5 winter this year. Lets be honest we all lose anyway…
I realize you are going by totals for the city of Erie. If you travel 10 miles south where the elevation changes, the lake effect totals can be drastically higher….!80″ to 200″ a year.
Can you please post any of your comments that are related to the snow storm for 3/12 – 3/13 in the post below. It will be easier to keep track of what’s going on. Thanks everyone

Live right in the middle of Erie and just finished shoveling about 10 inches out of my driveway. I swear next year is the year I spring for a snowblower lol
Syracuse native here. Just wanted to chime in on how completely glad I am to see that Erie is winning this year. We win too much, Erie you can have the snow!!
Hold on Syracuse and Buffalo Wednesday afternoon into Thursday you might gain some ground on us and pull it off again! 4-6″ Forecast for Erie 7-12″ For Buffalo. They didn’t show anything farther North but can only imagine it being the same or more!
If only Buffalo was forecast with 7-12. They’re now saying 14-18, with possible blizzard conditions. Buffalo is definitely going to give Erie a good challenge (much to my snow weary dismay)
We have one of the clearest skies right now in Syracuse and also one of the nicest days in a couple of months Val. Hard to believe what tomorrow is going to look like in some of the cities. GO BUFFALO
Erie resident for the past 24 years. Of the top ten snowiest winters in Erie we have lived here for 6. I REALLY wish another city would take top honors. This year has really been a drag…but spring can’t be too far behind. Snow should be gone by Memorial Day! Think Spring!

i really enjoy your site im from erie and moved to florida for 15 years now live in china so your site has really been great to get my updates im hoping they break the record so i can have some fun with my family seeing the top 10 snowiest years all after i was born makes me realize why i moved south and will probably stay in the south when i return to good old USA

im in the south so i think our coldest day this year was 42 last year was in low 30′s
when i was up near shanghai it was always raining and cold from january until april
That’s interesting and doesn’t sound like too bad of weather other than the cold and rain in shanghai. How is the humidity and temps in the warm season there. Obviously you can tell I’m clueless about China’s weather
im near hong kong and the summers are worse than florida very humid and rains allot from march until august since we walk allot here compared to the states it is brutal

I think the most humid weather I have ever been in was in NYC about 4-5 years ago believe it or not. They were setting rerecords for the heat the few days I was there and the moisture coming from the buildings, streets and everything else was nuts. Luckily all of the meetings were at the hotel I was staying at and it was a taxi when I had to venture out. Most likely I won’t be vising China anytime soon 
I too am a Syracuse native and LOVE this site! I currently live in Northwest Arkansas and we had snow on the ground for 1 week straight last month and everyone was crying and moaning about how sick they were of winter. They need to spend a winter in Syracuse! (or any other awesome snowy city). Wait, on second thought that would be a bad idea. These people are REALLY bad drivers when they see a snowflake fall. (An inch or more will close schools
) and I don’t wish that on my Northern friends
Buffalo can’t shake Grand Rapids…its OK they are way above their paygrade in this right now…they are like the upstart in the NCAA Tourney that takes the final four team down to the wire before realizing they don’t belong there and choking at the end, lol…

Detroit is 10″ away from breaking it’s all time record for snowfall in a season. The old record of 93.6 inches occurred back in 1880-1881. We probably won’t break the record but who knows? Crazier things have happened, in fact our biggest snow storm ever happened in April.
Pat, check out that list of the greatest/least snowiest winters in Erie. I remember (as I’m sure we all have), the stories of our parents and grandparents of just how brutal the winters were back in “their day”. But looking at the stats for the least snowiest winters, that doesn’t seem to be the case. Any thoughts on this?
Paul–basically people who talk about the brutal winters from years past were partially right. They may not have gotten as much snow as what Erie has over the past 20 years, but the winters were often colder & stayed colder, so the snow that fell did not melt as much & piled up, blew around & drifted etc. The somewhat milder winters Erie has had over the past couple decades results in warmer lake temperatures & more energy & moisture available for lake effect storms. Also, the lake tends to freeze a bit later in the season most years & is likely to open up more due to frequent thaws/mini-thaws, allowing lake effect snow (to some extent) most of the winter season. That is how we can have higher seasonal snow totals yet the winter might not seem as bad as years ago when it piled up & basically stayed much of the year. Of course this year seems pretty bad b/c the snow totals are fairly high & it was such a cold winter. A lot of the least snowiest winters were from the dust bowl days when the jet stream was stuck in a different patttern & dust particles from the plains were abundant enough to traverse the globe (the dust bowl from the 30′s was a result of cyclical weather patterns as well as man-made issues in attempt to overcome drought & famine).
that storm missed us completely. and judging by an accuweather calendar for the month of march, don’t think we’re gonna top that 149.1 inch mark for our all time snowiest winter set in 2000-2001. that calendar showing too many days in the 40s and 50s.

Can South Bend get an unofficial spot on the list? I know we don’t have official stats this year, but with WNDU putting us at 96.3″ and WSBT has 97.7″, we would be in 5th if we had someone to measure. I haven’t seen my grass yet in 2014.

Been in Erie through all of the 10 snowiest and still remember 1978-79 as being the most brutal. I wasn’t here for the Thanksgiving 1956 storm but heard about it all my life. Being a carpenter and general contractor and dealing with the weather here if anyone cares I’ll give you my most memorable months of winters past.
November 2000
December 1983 Millcreek Police commandeered my truck a ’72 Dodge Powerwagon with 38″ Buckshots 2″ body lift and 6″ suspension lift. The snow was still rolling up over the hood. That was the year Asbury Rd. was shut down and all the cars were towed up to Barbers tavern now a Kwik Fill some of them at 26th and Asbury. A few of them by way of the 72 Sno Fiter

May 2005 snowed 3″ in the west county and ended up
50+ degrees later in the day.
December 1984 plowed 18 nights but it wasn’t brutally cold just snowed a lot. Plowed Fitting Lumber at the west end of the airport from 1984 until they closed in the early 90′s. The airstrip would report 2.5″ of snow and it was over my blade at the lumber yard several times. Airport totals have always been far less than actual here due mostly to being flat and heavy west wind off the lake. This year has been different most of this snow is from the Ohio Valley.

Buffalo has no prayer breaking the 199.2 inches in 76-77…I mean it couldn’t have snowed another .8 inches for an even 200?? Lmao
I just checked and with 120.6 inches of snow, Erie has passed it’s 9th snowiest winter of 120.0 inches back in ’70-’71. Supposed to be a big storm coming out of the Rockies and they’re calling for it to hit here tomorrow, Sunday, March 2nd.
I’ve seen some comments about not wanting to be at the top…but the way I figure, if I’m going to be shoveling every darn day, may as well be #1 in shoveling. I’d hate to be shoveling daily and NOT be #1. Go Syracuse! Let it snow…

Kind of the same with Erie right now. Why not hope for the snowiest season on record when you are this close to it. Then years from now you folks in Erie can tell your Kids, Grandkids when they are complaining about the snow or shoveling that “hey, this isn’t nothing. You should have seen the snow season back in 2013-2014″. 
Don’t know about you guys. Must be young whipper-snappers. At 60 and 5 more snow = more work, more work = more tired, more tired = more cranky, more cranky = a more unhappy wife, a more unhappy wife = living hell. Please, not one more inch. Go Syracuse, Grand Rapids, Buffalo…any place else.

Y’all need to check out Oswego, NY and if that doesn’t beat all check out Redfield, NY with 232″ of snow that’s almost 20 feet of snow— AND here our snow is dropped not in inches but feet!
The Keweenaw in MI has gotten 275″. This for cities over 100K. There will always be somewhere else with more snow.
Unfortunately, they confined their list to cities with populations over 100,000. You’re right, though — there are a number of cities and towns with smaller populations that could beat that list!

Only good things to come from that amount of snow is plenty of aquifer this summer and able to heat those houses with a candle with all that added insulation.
Perrysburg in ski country south of Buffalo has almost 300 inches so far…but really compared to places like the Sierra Nevada mountains in California where a single storm can bring 10-15 feet and a place in Japan that AVERAGES 100-125 FEET of snow per year, these totals are child’s play. That being said for the people having to snowblow and plow it definitely isn’t…
I live in Erie, on the lake, and can assure you that the lake is frozen. Solidly. The snow doesn’t melt between storms. We are all cranky and starved for anything resembling grass.
It’s really bad when you live in Erie and the temp is 18 degrees and you’re like wow… it was -7 this morning…it’s really warming up.
watertown NY/tug hill
Hey meg, Watertown NY or Tug Hill aren’t big enough for the contest. The city has to have a population of at least 100k, and watertown has less than 30k. Same for Tug Hill. I think the only hope for everyone in NYS is for Syracuse to get some lake effect snow that Erie, somehow, missed.
Or a Noreaster since Syracuse will usually pick up at least moderate snowfall if not heavier depending on how far inland it tracks…
Gr8 site! Chicago historically doesn’t “get that much” snow, but check out the population of Chicago @ 2.8 million people! That is 28x the population of Erie, PA. Their 69″ (and sure to get more, record is 89″ in the late 1970′s) is like “snowfall on steroids.” Snow isn’t that bad, but when having to deal with snow and masses of people… It sure takes the fun out of winter! 69″ is the snowfall @ O’Hare, which is most certainly way lower than the other areas in the Chicago metro area. From the Wisconsin border to Indiana-Michigan line, there are 9 million people. No doubt on the southern tip of Lake Michigan, snow totals are up there with the big dogs on this list.
Another 4 inches coming for Grand Rapids this evening. Hopefully we’ll be back in 2nd by this time tomorrow night! Will this snow ever end? Sheesh!

That was quite a jump for Billings, Montana, moving from 13th to 5th in three days. Based on their former position, they must have gotten somewhere in the area of 15 inches of snow the last three days. That’s a LOT for a three day period!
Yeah, a real nice jump Dan. I believe Billings went from 65.1 the last update to the 81.6 they have now. Something like 16.5 inches since Friday if my math is right. I’m impressed and was surprised when I did the update. I saw most likely on the weather channel that they were getting snow but I didn’t notice it was that much.
Tell me about it!!!! I live in Billings and plow snow for a living. I’m gonna be rich at the end of this season. Another 14″ forecasted in the next three days.
Yeah I live in Billings and work at the airport. We broke our old February record with the 15 inches we just got.

I also believe zero days of school were canceled here in Billings … and we had an actual temperature low of -23*! Montanans know how to dress for the weather. Unfortunately for me … I live on a dead end & side streets don’t get plowed.
Hi Marie, We have had a few days off in the Syracuse area so far. I think a few of the schools may even be at their limit right now. I think one was due to a snow storm and the others were mainly because of the cold temps. I was reading the Billings facebook page a little while ago and it looked like several people weren’t too happy about Sd2, School District 2 not being closed today. Ours always seem to be on a holiday weekend or at least on a weekend to give them 3-4 days off
Buffalo just picked up 1.4 inches of lake snow today, up to 99.1 and has lake snow potential in the forecast for the next 5 days…should be over 100 inches by tomorrow…
Matt, Syracuse got a little jump on Buffalo this last round but Buffalo is still hanging tough. It will go down to the end of the season I think. I am starting to read about a stormy week and a stormy beginning to March which could make things interesting but that’s is way too far out for the pros to predict right now. The closer we get though the details will start to come out
Here in Worcester we all feel we have seen enough of it this year. The snow has been coming every few days or so. Our parking lot got plowed by noon today from yesterday’s storm, and a new storm came in about 2 hours later, which is expected to drop another 3 inches of the heavy stuff. It’s pretty, but the snow budgets are blown.
I have lived within 100 miles of each of these cities in my life. Its not global climate change. It’s me.

Erie here. I think our best shot at droppig out of the top spot is for 1,800 people to get tired of the snow and move away. Our weather wouldn’t be any better, and we wouldn’t have any less snow, but we’d be under the 100,000 population threshold.

This is garbage. Why count the cities with at least 100,000 people? What about the rest of us? Just like the stupid weather channel, only talk about the the weather for people living in cities. I live just to the south of #1 city Erie (In the snow belt). Cry to me Erie we have 50 + inches more than you…but we don’t hear anything about that. Rediculous! This goes out to all those country folks who don’t whine about the snow.
boo hoo! I am in the county also, and while at times the inland areas get a bit more snow–not that much more because there are times the lake gets dumbed on when the inland areas get spared. the lake is frozen–this is not lake effect snow. lving in the county and driving all over the city and South of I90–I have not seen more snow 50 miles from Erie this year. maybe other years–but the city has gotten as much or more. You cannot count your measurements–even for Erie city–the airport numbers seem like a huge underestimate of actual snowfall.
The airport is flat as a pancake measure the snow on the east side of Powell Avenue because the wind blows it all across the runway and deposits it there. Was in Sherman NY yesterday. 35 mi. north east of Erie visibly double the snow there. Franklin Center same visibly much more. Don’t forget Erie area gets heavy snow on and around St. Patricks day 7 out of 10 years and it skipped the last two years. Have had snow in excess of 3″ in May!

I live in erie. We have had more snow than I care to mention. And to all of the nay sayers, seeing that we can not open out back door for most of this winter I will say much of the snow Does not melt before the next round comes! There is nothing good about this to mention this year. My kids are always cold, sick and suffering from cabin fever!
The lake isn’t FROZEN?!?!? They just held a golf tournament on it!
What’s remarkable about Detroit, Ann Arbor, Toledo and Flint is that these are not lake effect snow cities. They’ve received all their snow from storms.
Toledo typically has several winter thaws, and rain to go with it. Thanks to the cold we have had snow.
jb, pretty much the same here this season in Syracuse. I think we had a couple days maybe twice where it got into the 40′s. Been a cold winter.
Good info Joe and Thanks for sharing. My guess is that most of Syracuse’s snow this season is from storms. It seems like our lake effect machine, Ontario hung up to the North most of this season so far.
Yes Joe. I totally agree. This has truly been a historic snowfall season for southeast Michigan and northwest Ohio. I live in metro Detroit and based on the averages, we have no business being in the top 10 rankings. This season is the third snowiest in Detroit recorded history, dating back to 1880. We only need a half inch of snow (an absolute given) to move to number 2 all time and about 15 inches for number 1 (not impossible!) I believe the second snowiest season was in 1928 and the snowiest season was in 1880, so although Detroiters have seen 70 inches before, especially recently, no Detroiter alive has ever seen 80 inches of snow in one season, truly historic!!!

It use to be easy for me to find the top 10 snowiest season for the cities on the NOAA site but for some reason I’m having a hard time this season. Another 6 inches for Grand Rapids today, pushing us over the 100 inch mark for the winter. Should move us up to 2nd as of 2/18. Good thing Muskegon, MI doesn’t qualify population wise. If they did they’d be number 1, with over 120 inches so far this winter.
Hi Dan, I just took a quick look and you’re right about Grand Rapids being in 2nd place now
I’ll get at least a top 10 update in a little later today which will show Grand Rapids moving up. Right now I’m showing that you set a date record for yesterday with 5.6 inches of snow breaking the old record of 4.7 inches set in 1956. Keep in mind that the total doesn’t count any overnight snow that may have fallen. They dropped our expected snow totals down to just an inch or two here in the Syracuse area so it may be close for 2nd come the end of the day 
As for Muskegon, if I was able to add the smaller cities they would probably be in the top 20 maybe but no where near the top for the fact that a lot of other smaller towns are probably over 200 inches by now. Congrats to Grand Rapids

I lived in the Rochester area and as a kid loved the snow and the added lake effect bonus. As an adult and living in Connecticut I do miss how the folks in the snow belt cities handled the snow, cold and winters. Though I must admit this is been a tough winter. Last night we got snow not much, but it was like a lake effect squall (my youth was calling)
Most Erieites don’t want to be #1 (except snow bums & bunnies who aren’t normal folk). We don’t want to be #1,000 or #1,000,000 on this list, but even worse than the snow here this winter is the frigid temperatures. Can’t recall a winter with so many single-digit and sub-zero lows. The combo…snowfall+temps = 1 brutal winter.
Pat, I normally just go with the flow during the winter and pretty much don’t even pay attention to it. I don’t think I can remember being warm once this season though. The cold has definitely bothered even me this year. I see 40′s coming up toward the end of the week here in Syracuse which will be nice.

Watertown has had about 160″ so far this season. Only about 30,000 population so it doesn’t count. One other noteworthy point for Watertown,
during the cold snap in January it was the coldest place in the continental United States at -37!
I saw that temp that day Ted when the Weather channel was showing the temps across the country. That’s nuts! No doubt this has been one of the coldest winters I can remember. OK, now stop hogging all the snow. It seems like all of the snow bands just keep hanging around Watertown this season. Give them a little push to the south would you so Syracuse can get in on some decent Lake Effect
I second that, Was up in Watertown last week visiting an old Navy buddy, Wow what a sight! Lotta hardcore mofo’s up in Watertown! Just the name of the town itself sounds pretty tough.
It seems like Worcester, Ma is always in the top 10, which is why I live in Tucson, Az now, although I do miss the snow sometimes, but not the cold!
Worcester is definitely a player John and gave us, Syracuse and Erie a run last season. My son also moved to Tucson, AZ from Syracuse. Unfortunately he loves it there

Syracuse rocketed into 2nd place past us in Buffalo and seems destined to win again…not only do they “benefit” from the open waters of Lake Ontario, they also get snow from the N’oreasters that hit the east coast a lot of times while Buffalo, Rochester and Erie usually are too far away to get anything significant unless it tracks further inland in which case we get 6-8″ of snow while Syracuse gets buried with feet…
That is pretty much how it goes Matt although other than this last storm Buffalo seems to be picking up snow still from where ever it can get it. I don’t think it’s even close to being a sure thing for Syracuse. I do remember several years back when a Nor’easter came up and ended up going way to the west. Syracuse picked up around 3 inches I think because we were on the warm side while both Buffalo and Rochester picked up something like 2 feet of snow. A lot of time left and my guess is the lead will keep changing for awhile anyways.
People here in Erie are now wondering if we’re going to break our record of 149.5 inches. Possible with about 6 weeks left before April 1.
Hi Paul, any idea where Erie is at right now on the all time list? I agree with 6 weeks left is still a lot of time to do it and it seems like I keep adding to the snow totals just about everyday

NNYBliss, I’m pretty curious also as to how much snow Watertown has this season. It seems like the Lake Effect has been hanging up that far north this season. More so than compared to other seasons where it seems to hang a little more south toward Oswego/Fulton. Any totals from some spotters?
Redfield on the Tug Hill was at 297 inches on Feb 6th, and has since seen more snow from both lake effect and the last system….
I was looking at some of the totals for the smaller towns yesterday Michael and I can’t imagine that much. It has to be a whole other way of life come winter in towns like Redfield, Hooker and all the others that get that much snow. Nothing but respect for those of you who deal with that much. Do you have any links to a site(s) that keep track of those snow stats?

That is not correct. Since the 2000-2001 season, Rochester has had the most snow among the major NYS cities only ONE TIME (in 2011-12). Buffalo has had the most snow among the major NYS cities only ONE TIME (2001-02). Syracuse has had the most snow all the other times (11) through the 2012-13 season. Check out wikipedia “Golden Snowball Award.” Or, check out “City-Data.com” for the list of 101 U.S. cities with 50,000+ population. Syracuse is #1. Rochester is #11.

Syracuse measures its snowfall at the airport..which is in the villiage of north Syracuse 15 to 20 minutes north of the city itself…not actually measured in the city of the listed population.

Hi Meg, I think it would be more like Oswego, NY has a population of around 18,000. Even if you add another 9 – 10,000 students the math still wouldn’t add up to the 100,000 pop. That said I appreciate all of the snow Oswego gets and have been there many times including when some decent lake effect snow is hitting
