Record Breaking Snow Falls Across the US!

Below are just some of the cities that broke a date record yesterday, 11/11 across the United States.  Pretty impressive to say the least.  We also have at least 50 large cities in the US now that have measurable snow for the 2019-2020 snow season.  I may be wrong and I normally am but I believe that this is by far the earliest that we have had 50 cities with this much snow this early.  At least since the Golden Snow Globe snow contest started 10 seasons ago  :)

As of the last update, your city will need at least a foot of snow just to slide into the Top 10.  Almost 2 feet of snow to take the lead away from Lakewood, Colorado which has 22 inches already.  The normal for this time in the season for Lakewood is just over 7 inches.  If my stats are right, Lakewood’s snow total for the whole season is around 55 inches.  They almost have half of that already, so yeah, this is an unusual start to the snow season.  Luckily the rest of our cities have the whole season ahead to play catch up :)

Below are some of the larger cities with a population of 100,000 or more which is based on the 2010 census that set snow records yesterday that were reported by our National Weather Service.  As I said, I’m impressed ;)

Erie, Pennsylvania Wins Golden Snow Globe Snow Contest

I feel confident enough with the lead that Erie, PA has over second place Syracuse right now to say Congratulations to all of the folks in Erie, Pennsylvania and well deserved.

It’s time to wrap up the national Golden Snow Globe snow contest for big cities in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more as of the 2010 census. It’s been a fun snow contest this season as always even though Erie did have the biggest lead that I can remember going into January since the snow contest started. I feel confident that Erie’s lead of 44.9 inches over 2nd place Syracuse is enough to carry them through May and June. 200 inches? Still possible IMO ;)

Keep in mind though that until the end of June 30th, everything is unofficial ;) We never know if there are any adjustments or corrections to be made to the current snow stats by the National Weather Service.

Congratulations Erie!

I will keep doing updates if there is snow and it could still be fun to see if Erie, pa can pass Buffalo, NY’s seasonal snow record of 199.4 inches which was set back in the 1976-1977 snow season. Right now, (4/30/2018), Erie is only 0.9 inches away from tying Buffalo, 1 inch away from passing Buffalo and 1.5 inches away from doing what no other Big city has done in the past, reach 200 inches in a season.

Erie, Pa was ahead of Syracuse, NY by about 83 inches going into January. Think about that! Most cities in the Golden Snow Globe snow contest don’t even have that much snow for the season :) My thoughts at that time were if Syracuse or any of the other cities could have cut the lead down to around 30 inches by sometime in February then they maybe still had a shot. That didn’t happen and probably wouldn’t have mattered because Erie continued to keep adding to their snow totals.

How The 2017-2018 Snow Season Played Out

There have been 5 lead changes this season if my fuzzy math is right ;)

* Lakewood, CO Leads – The snow season started up on or around 10/10/17 when the Colorado cities were the first to report snow for the season. Lakewood, CO was leading the snow contest with 4.5 inches of snow and continued to lead until around 11/9/17 when Billings, Montana took the lead with 4.9 inches.

* Billings, MT Leads – Billings, MT was the first lead change of the snow season and Spokane Washington was right behind Billings is second place. We had our 1st Top 25 on or around 10/25/17.

Erie, PA jumps on the snowboard for the 1st time this season on or around 11/19 with 0.3 inches. Billings, MT has over a foot of snow held on to the lead until Erie, PA snows into the lead on or around 12/12/17

* Erie, PA Leads – Erie, Pa is now in the lead with 16.5 inches of snow but it was a short-lived stay on the top of the Golden Snow Globe snow mountain. On 12/13 Syracuse, NY slipped past Erie and into the lead :)

* Syracuse, NY Leads – Syracuse moves into the lead with a snow total of 21.2 inches of snow. Erie, Pa wasn’t too happy and moved back into the lead a couple of days later on 12/15

* Erie, PA Leads – Erie, Pa takes the lead back from Syracuse and has a snow total of 23.8 inches. Erie, Pa holds on to the lead until, well until now :)
I know how this story ends and it’s about to get pretty ugly soon :) :)

Erie, Pa never lost the lead again the rest of the 2017-2018 snow season. On or around 12/23/2017 Erie had a total of 37.5 inches of snow. On 12/25 Erie’s snow totals almost doubled and they were up to 73.5 inches. Oh, it didn’t stop there and the snow didn’t either. On 12/26 I’m showing that Erie had 97.5 inches and it was still snowing. Come 12/27 Erie’s new snow total was at 103.6 inches of snow. WOW!!! :)

Erie leads 2nd place Syracuse by 67.8 inches or should we say over 5 feet of snow. Oh, it gets worst before it starts to get a little better. Erie’s snow lead over 2nd place Syracuse was as high as 83.3 inches by the end of December. That’s almost 7 feet of snow more than Syracuse, NY, the snowiest Big city in the country on average has. Crazy! :)

Syracuse did manage to cut Erie’s lead down to 40+ inches but nothing was stopping Erie this season. OK, maybe that 200-inch mark is stopping Erie but that is about it. Erie crushed their previous highest seasonal snow record of 149.1 inches which was set back in the 2000-2001 snow season. As of the last update Erie, Pa’s new seasonal record is at 198.5 inches on the season. Congrats Erie :)

I know this is all Erie, Erie, Erie – Marsha, Marsha, Marsha but that is pretty much how this season went. I am working on a trophy for Erie but need to find what I want and also need to wait and see what the final snow totals will be. Thanks for making this snow season so much fun everyone, Patrick

Erie, PA Leads National Golden Snow Globe Snow Contest

Erie, PA Is The Snowiest Big City In United States Now

Erie, PA snowed into the top spot on the snow mountain on Tuesday and are still adding to their snow totals. WTG Erie and you better look down that mountain because there are a lot of cities camping on it right now trying to climb to the top ;)

There are actually too many cities on the snow mountain right now and I am afraid of an avalanche happening. So, just a heads up that some of the cities will be tossed off of the snow mountain come the next update in a few hours.

It’s fun seeing cities from Texas, Alabama, North Carolina in the snow contest but it’s just too many for me to update a couple of times a day. I looked at around 90 cities yesterday and by the time I finished an update it was time to start another one, lol. I’m a tired man right now ;)

I really do enjoy it and this is about the time in the snow season when I cut the list down to around 50 which is more manageable for me. I always keep an eye on the cities every now and then and if I see it is snowing in a certain area I check the cities out. Some of the cities that get tossed will be back soon I am sure and some of them will be in the Top 25 before the season is over.

The Goal Is An Accurate List Of Top 25 Snowiest Cities In The US

Keep in mind that the real goal of the Golden Snow Globe snow site is to have an accurate Top 25 list of snowiest cities in the United States. With that storm that came through the southern states and up the coast hitting some cities that don’t see that much snow I’m not as confident right now with the Top 25 as I normally am. That will work itself out though as the season goes on and different cities move in and out of the Top 25.Like I said, I do this every season and cities are rotating in and out all season.

So take one last look at all of the cities in the contest right now because some will be getting tossed off the snow mountain. I guarantee 100% that some will be back :) Have a great day all and stay safe…

Syracuse, New York is Snowiest Big City In United States

Syracuse, New York 2016-2017 Snowiest Big City in the United States

I think it’s time and safe right now to call Syracuse the snow champs of the Big cities in the United States with a population of 100,00 or more.

Congrats to Syracuse but of course right now it’s an unofficial Congrats. The reason for the unofficial congrats is because the season does go on until June 30th. REALLY! Plus, who is thinking about snow on June 30th :)

The last time Syracuse won the National Golden Snow Globe contest was back in the 2012-2013 snow season. Syracuse hung on that season to pull out a victory over Worcester, MA. Last season’s defending snow champs Lakewood, Colorado is currently in 24th place.

I also want to say congrats to Runner-up Rochester, NY. I’m pretty confident that Rochester should be able to hold on to the #2 spot on the Golden Snow Globe mountain. With a possible snow storm ready to hit a few cities in the western US I think I will hold off on congratulating the other 3 cities in the Top 5 for now ;)

That said I have posted the most snow that any of the cities in the Top 10 has received in the past for the months of May and June below. This is why I am confident to declare Syracuse the winners of the 2016-2017 Golden Snow Globe snow contest this early/late in the snow season. I will continue to keep updating the snow stats for all of the cities up until the official date of June 30th so stay tuned for any changes and there may be some.

May and June Snowfall for Rochester, New York

#2 Rochester, New York - The most snow that The National Weather Service is showing for Rochester in May is 10.9 inches of snow which was in 1989. I’m not seeing any snow for Rochester in June and the date of records go back to the 1873-1874 snow season. I’m sure there were several measuring spots over the years but 10.7 inches is the most that shows out of any of them. Right now Syracuse is ahead of 2nd place Rochester, NY by 27.8 inches of snow. It was a close and fun competition this season Roc, but not this season. Not gonna happen ;)

May and June Snowfall for Anchorage, Alaska

#3 Anchorage, Alaska - The most snow that the National Weather Service is showing for Anchorage, Alaska in may is 5.0 inches back in 2001 and only a trace of snow in June. These records go back almost 70 years to the 1953-1954 season in the Anchorage area. Right now Syracuse is ahead of Anchorage, AK by 52.5 inches of snow. Not going to happen ;)

May and June Snowfall for Erie, Pennsylvania

#4 Erie, Pennsylvania - Here is the most snow that Erie, PA has received in May and June going back to 1926. Erie received 0.4 inches in May of 1989 and received only a trace of snow several time in the month of June. Right now, Erie, Pa is 56.3 inches of snow behind Syracuse, NY. A Big shout out to all of the visitors from Erie but, Not going to happen this season ;)

May and June Snowfall for Worcester, Massachusetts

#5 Worcester, Massachusetts - The most snow that Worcester, MA has ever received in May was 11.4 inches in 1977. Pretty impressive IMO but with the lead that Syracuse has right now that wouldn’t be enough to take the lead. No measurable snow has been recorded in June going back to about 1899. There were several seasons between then and present that snow stats weren’t kept for Worcester. Worcester, MA trails Syracuse, NY right now by 56.6 inches. Sorry Worcester, Not going to happen ;)

May and June Snowfall for Manchester, New Hampshire

#6 Manchester, New Hampshire - There really is now way to figure out how much snow Manchester, NH has received in the months of May and June. Most of the time Manchester didn’t have a weather station to keep track of the snow stats. I’m pretty sure though, that it is safe to say with Manchester trailing Syracuse by 57.2 inches, it’s Not going to happen ;)

May and June Snow for Buffalo, New York

#7 Buffalo, New York - The most snow that Buffalo, NY has ever received in May is 7.9 inches in 1989. Buffalo has received a trace of snow in the month of June on several occasions but never any measurable snow in June. The snow stats for Buffalo go back to 1885. One thing that stood out while I was looking up the snow stats was that Buffalo has received a trace of snow at least once for every calendar month including July and August. Pretty cool but being behind Syracuse by 58.8 inches as of the last update, Not going to happen this season. Buffalo is long overdue so keep an eye on them next season ;)

May and June Snowfall for Billings, Montana

#8 Billings, Montana - Billings, Montana records date back to 1935. The most snow Billings has received in May is 15.0 inches which was back in 1981. Billings also received 2.0 inches of snow in June back in 1950. Currently, Syracuse is ahead of Billings, MT by 60.8 inches. Even though there is snow in the forecast for the surrounding area the next day or two, it’s Not going to happen this season Billings ;)

May and June Snow for Hartford, Connecticut

#9 Hartford, Connecticut - 1.3 inches of snow was the most that Hartford, Connecticut has ever received in May which was back in 1977. Hartford has never recorded any measurable snow in June but has had a trace of snow several times, the last time being in 1993. Hartford’s records go back to 1905. Yup, Not happening! Syracuse is ahead of Hartford by 72.6 inches as of the last update.

May and June Snowfall for Spokane, Washington

#10 Spokane, Washington - The most snow that Spokane, Washington has ever received in May since records have been kept is 3.5 inches which was back in 1967. Spokane has received a trace of snow in June several times with the most recent being just last year in 2016. Right now Spokane trails Syracuse by 73.4 inches of snow this season. Yeah, y’all know, Not happening this season ;)

Syracuse Takes Lead in National Snow Contest

Updated 7:00 PM – Buh Bye Rochester, NY and Hello Syracuse, NY ;)

Syracuse took over the lead in the National snow contest as of the last update From the National Weather Service. Syracuse has set a date record for today reporting 12.5 inches so far and it’s still snowing. The new date record of 12.5 blows away the old record of 5.9 inches of snow set back in 1987.

So far Rochester is showing 3.3 inches for today closing in on the previous date record of 3.5 inches which was set way back in 1937. Below is the new Top 5 snowiest cities to date.

* Syracuse, NY – 19.1 inches
* Rochester, NY – 15.4 inches
* Billings, MT – 5.3 inches
* Sioux Falls, SD – 5.0 inches
* Anchorage, AK – 3.4 inches

Rochester Takes Lead in National Snow Contest

Rochester, New York leads the national Golden Snow Globe contest after the new snow stats came out from the National Weather Service. For now, anyways, come on Cuse :)

We also have a Top 25 list as of the last update. I’m guessing there will be some more changes in the line-up when the next update comes out a little later this afternoon. Here are the current Top 5 snowiest cities in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more as of yesterday, 11/20/2016.

* Rochester, NY – 12.1 inches
* Syracuse, NY – 6.6 inches
* Billings, MT – 5.3 inches
* Sioux Falls, SD – 5.0 inches

Storm and Lake Effect Snow 11/21/2016

It’s still snowing pretty good right now and there are several travel advisories ou so check with your NWS or local meteorologists for the latest weather reports.

Here is a recent look at the NWS radar at around 2:00 PM today. It looks like a mix of some pretty intense lake effect snow bands coming off of Lake Ontario

  • along with some snow falling still from the snow storm. Look how far south they are reaching.

    Lake Effect Snow and Snow Storm Argos

    The Winter snow storm that has been named Argos by TWC has been dropping a lot of snow in the Upstate and Central New York areas along with some pretty gusty winds. After reading around I am seeing some reports of snow totals approaching close to 3 feet of snow.

    According to some tweets on Twitter and one by Carolyn Yerdon who keeps everyone up to date with the snow totals in Redfield, New York, they are up to about 32 inches and the snow is still falling.

    • 5 Top Snowiest Big Cities in US 2015 – 2016

    Snowiest Top 5 Cities in the United States 2015 – 2016

    Here it November 6th and we finally have a Top 5 list for the snowiest Big cities in the nation. The current list would have been from the end of the day on the 5th for most of the cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest.

    Anchorage, Alaska continues to add to their lead and added another inch of snow since the last update. It seems like Anchorage either gets quite a bit of snow or next to nothing each season. Anchorage did win the snow contest back in the 2011 – 2012 snow season with 134.5 inches of snow.

    Snowiest US Cities with Snow

    Denver, Colorado slipped past Syracuse, New York picking up an inch of snow since the last update. That was the measurable snow for Denver this season. Syracuse is stuck at 0.4 inches right now and I’m sure that the temperatures being in the 70′s in the northeast has something to do with that. Record temps have been set the last few days for several cities in the northeast and I’m guessing they are in no hurry to stop breaking them.

    Rochester, Minnesota remains in 4th place at 0.2 inches and the other newcomer to receive snow this season besides Denver is Cleveland, Ohio which is showing 0.1 inches so far for the 2015 – 2016 snow season. Welcome to the new snow season Denver and Cleveland. Cleveland’s snow may be an adjustment or an error because they weren’t showing snow as of the last update so that may change.

    Golden Snow Globe Cities Below Average Snow

    Almost all of the cities in the National Golden Snow Globe contest are below their average snowfall for this date, but I don’t expect that to last much longer. Remember, the National snow contest is for cities with a population of 100,000 or more as of the 2010 census.     It’s a Three Way Race For King of The Snow Mountain

    Updated 3/30 6 PM - Looks like all of the totals are in from this last blast of snow. The snowfall totals from the storm below were updated from earlier.

    So here is the lowdown on the top 3 cities right now. Erie leads Syracuse by 5.5 inches and leads Buffalo by 8.4 inches. Still a 3 way race ;)

    Syracuse’s lead over Buffalo, NY has been melted down to just 2.9 inches now. Man is it close and stay tuned!

    3/30 3 PM - Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY and Rochester, NY all got some snow and a decent amount of it for this time in the season. So far nothing is being reported for 2nd place Syracuse. I know, there is still more snow to add to the snow totals and I’ll get a top 10 update in later on when The National Weather Service comes out with the next update. Here is what they are reporting total from this last blast of snowfall.

    Erie, PA – 4.0 inches
    Buffalo, NY – 5.6 inches
    Rochester, NY – 8.6 inches
    Cleveland – 5 inches (Broke into top 10)
    Syracuse, NY – Notta, Null, Zip, Zero, 0.00 – They must have forgotten to measure the snow before the airplanes took off :(

    A couple of things stand out from this last blast other than Erie adding to the lead that is. Buffalo is definitely in striking distance now of taking over 2nd place and perhaps even storming to the top to take the grand prize. Oh yeah, the grand prize of a virtual trophy or something plus a virtual pat on the back for a job well done of course ;)

    Rochester is closing in on 4th place and should only be a few inches away from Grand Rapids, MI when the next update comes out from what I have heard and read. Even if Rochester doesn’t take over the 4th place spot they gave themselves a pretty good lead over Billings, Montana now and look pretty secure at finishing in the top 5 this season. Maybe Billings has something to say about that though.

    I’m loving how this contest is playing out this season and it’s going to be a little bit sad when Syracuse pulls out the Lake Effect Dance like last year and goes snows to the top like last season. I will sincerely feel bad for Erie and the friends I have made from there the last couple of seasons ;) Stay Tuned!!!

    Snowiest City in the U. S. Contest Still Close

    The snowiest city in the United States is still a tight snow race and could be right down until the last snow flake falls. Syracuse managed to get just enough snow and t wasn’t much to hold off Erie, Pa to remain King of the Snow Mountain since the last update. Worcester, Mass is still right behind the both of them and don’t count out Rochester, NY yet either. They have been slowly sneaking up on everyone the last few weeks.

    One announcement to make is that a snow dance has been done in the Syracuse area :) I felt that the time was right and with the low snow totals we have so far in the Syracuse area it was well overdue also. It normally takes around 2 – 3 days for it to start having any effect on the weather so we’ll wait and see what happens. I suggest someone from Erie and the other cities also try a snow dance if you want to keep up ;) We also have a Snow God which resides in the Fairmount area which is just outside of the city and I’ve been informed that it has been awaken and the light is shining. I have a picture somewhere of it and I’ll post it if I can find it.

    Keep in mind where are many weather dances and you could be putting your entire city at risk :( A few years back one of our visitors to our sister site the www.goldensnowball.com  contest decided to try a dance. Well all hell broke out when instead of heavy snow or a snowstorm, high winds hit the city of Buffalo knocking down trees and knocking out power to thousands. True story, lol. So You Have Been Warned!

    What's Going On With Colorado's Snow or Lack of It

    I just updated all the cities and every time I do I keep expecting to see some of the Colorado cities move up. What’s going on??? Come on Denver, lets go Pueblo and Lakewood! It’s not looking pretty when even Richmond Virginia has more snow than you do. I think last season you were in the national snow contest for most of the season. Fort Collins is the only city out of Colorado that is beating Richmond. OK, the season has just begun but……

    Syracuse continues to be the news and in the news as a matter of fact. The snow continues to fly and they may break the record today for their snowiest December on record which is 70.3 set back in 2000. So far for December 66.1 inches of the white fluffy stuff has fallen. Not too bad considering we are only half way through the month. If it keeps up they also have a shot at beating the record for the snowiest month ever in Da Cuse which is 78.1 back in January 2004.

    Rochester, NY is also chasing their record for the snowiest December and need just a couple of inches to do it. The current record is 46.2 set back in 2008. Right now they are at 44.2 inches for December.

    Don’t forget about last season’s weather. Remember some of the big Nor Easters that came nonstop. Syracuse and Rochester may have a jump start but that’s just what it is, just the start of the 1010 – 2011 snow season.
