Chicago, Illinois Tied for 4th Snowiest Big City in US

Chicago’s 1st Measurable Snow of 2016-2017 Snow Season

Chicago, Illinois and several other cities across the United States received their 1st snowfall of the season. Remember, this snow contest is for cities with a population of 100,000 or more as of the last US Census.

Chicago had the first snowfall of the 2016-2017 snow season picking up 6.4 inches of snow Sunday sliding into a tie for 4th place with Grand Rapids, Michigan. Chicago also set a date snow record for 12/4 Sunday with the fresh 6.4 inches of snow beating the old record of 5.1 inches which was set back in 2010. Grand Rapids, MI did some mountain climbing also picking up 5.6 inches of snow on Sunday just missing a snow record of 5.9 inches that was set in 2009. Grand Rapids jumped all the way from the #23 spot on the snow mountain to the #4 spot.

Some Cities That Set Date Snow Records Sunday

* Fort Wayne, IN – new snow record 2.7 inches breaking the old of 1.8 set in 1972.

* Chicago, IL received 6.4 inches breaking the old record of 5.1 set in 2010.

* Madison, WI had 5.7 inches of snow Sunday breaking the old record of 5.6 set in 2007.

* Peoria, IL new date record is 4.2 beating the old record of 2.9 inches of snow set way back in 1964.

Chicago, Illinois Snows into 2nd Place in National Snow Contest

Chicago 2nd in Snowiest Big City Contest – Snow Records Broken

Congrats to Chicago, Illinois on taking over the nuber 2 spot on the snow mountain. Chicago broke a couple of date records for total snowfall the last couple of days and slipped past several cities to take over 2nd place in the Golden SNow Globe national snow contest for Big cities. Several other cities also set some snowfall records yesterday as this current snowstorm moves to the east across the country. Some of the snow records set yesterday are posted below.

Anchorage, Alaska is still sitting pretty at the top of the snow mountain and seem to be adding to their snow totals everyday. What a difference a season makes. Anchorage has almost as much snow so far in the 2015-2016 snow season than they had for the entire 2014-2015 season. As of the last update Anchorage had 19.6 inches of snow. For all of last season Anchorage only had 25.1 inches of snow.

No doubt we are starting to crank up the 2015-2016 snow season and at last check we have 31 Big cities with a population of 100,000 or more setting up camp on the snow mountain. The list will keep growing as this current snow storm moves through and it will be interesting and fun to see what other cities join in on the fun. Maybe Erie, Buffalo and Rochester. It will also be fun to see if Chicago can hold on to 2nd place for awhile because the top of the snow mountain is getting pretty crowded after yesterday’s snow.

Snow in Anchorage, Alaska – Let the Snow Games Begin

Anchorage, Alaska Starts 2015-2016 Golden Snow Globe Contest

Congrats Anchorage, Alaska on being the first Big city with a population of 100,000 or more to receive measurable snow. That can only mean one thing and like it or not the new 2015-2016 Golden Snow Globe contest has started up again. I hope everyone had a Great summer and maybe if we get lucky the summer will drag on into January. Don’t hold your breath though ;)

Anchorage, AK which received 0.3 inches of snow on September 29th and added another 2.5 inches of snow on September 30th for a total 2.8 inches of snow for the 2015-2016 season. Snow isn’t that unusual for Anchorage this early and their normal snowfall to date as of today is around 1.4 inches. Fairbanks, Alaska is showing a little over 20 inches so far this season. It’s probably a good thing that Fairbank’s population is just a little over 32,000.

So far Anchorage is the only Big city to receive measurable snowfall this season but there are a few other cities that have had at least a trace of snow. The most surprising in my opinion is that Chicago, Illinois is showing a trace which according to one of our visitors to our site Michael, it was a mix with hail that happened August 2nd.

The other cities that have had at least a trace of snow or wintry mix as of 9/30 are Billings, Montana and Colorado Springs, Colorado. I’ll have to take another peek to see if any of the other cities have received a trace of snow in the last week or so.

I’m really not looking forward to the cold weather that is right around the corner but I am looking forward to having fun with all of you like we always do :) Let’s have some fun once the 2015-2016 snow season gets into full swing and before we know it Spring will be popping up in no time.

Chicago and Other Cities Storm Into Top 25 Snowiest Cities

Updated 2/2 7 PM – All of the snowiest cities were just updated and once again a ton of changes in the lineup. I think all of the cities in the Top 25 snowiest cities in the US have jumped around on the snow mountain with this snow storm that is still hitting some of the cities. Below are several of the cities that broke the date records for yesterday and today. Keep in mind that the last update for most of the cities are as of 4-5 PM so the snow totals will be going up for some of them…

Several Cities That Had Snow Records Broken 2/1/2014

* Grand Rapids, Michigan set a date record today with 8.8 inches of snow and counting breaking the old record of 6.1 set back in 2011.

* South Bend, Indiana set a date record with 14.7 inches breaking the old of 8.4 set in 2011.

* Fort Wayne, Indiana – set a date record with 9.0 breaking the old of 4.9 2011

* Flint, Michigan – set a date record with 8.0 breaking the old of 6.8 set way back in 1967

* Detroit, Michigan – set a date record with 13.7 inches of snow breaking the old of 9.8 set in 1881

* Milwaukee, Wisconsin – new record of 10.4 inches of snow breaking the old of 9.0 from way, way back in 1915

Todays Snow Records Broken for the Date 2/2/2015

* Worcester, MA – set a date record with 11.2 inches breaking the old of 8.4 in 1974

* Syracuse, NY – set a date record with 8.5 beating the old of 7.0 set in 1990

* Hartford, Conn – set a date record with 6.9 breaking the old of 6.5 set way back in 1916

* Bridgeport, Conn – set a date record with 9.3 breaking the old record of 3.2 set in 1985

* Newark, NJ – set a date record with 4.2 beating the old record of 3.4 set in 1985

Updated 1 PM - There has been a lot of shuffling and snowballs being thrown the last day or two and it’s not over yet. This latest snow storm from what I have read was/is suppose to effect something like 100,000,000 people and seems to be doing just that. The latest update that I just did shows a lot of date records for yesterday being broken. Below are a few of the bigger cities that set snow records for yesterday. Most likely there are going to be a lot more set today when the afternoon snow updates come in later this afternoon from the National Weather Service.

Erie, Pa has cushioned their lead over the rest of us, for now anyways. For a lot of the cities the overnight snow totals, today’s snow hasn’t been reported yet so without a doubt there is going to be a whole lot more shuffling going on when I get the next snow totals updated. It’s going to be interesting to see how Boston and Worcester do with this storm after just getting pounded by the blizzard not too long ago. Hello Snowy Chicago and Buh Bye Anchorage, Alaska

I just got a Full update in and take a look at Chicago, Illinois jumping into the top 10 snowiest cities. I’ll have to take a look back but I can’t remember Chicago ever being in the top 10 since we started the contest unless it was maybe in the very beginning of the snow season. Better yet they knocked Anchorage, Alaska out of the top 10. Who would have ever thought that would happen? Right now Chicago is camping out in the #7 slot on the snow mountain. Chicago’s normal snowfall to date should be 16.9 inches, right now they are at 45.4 inches on the season. This time last season they had a snow total of 1.3 inches. Chicago is only a handful of inches away from having 4 feet of snow more than this time last season. Chicago, Chicago, Way to Go Chicago ;)

Now let’s talk about the snow storm that hit a good part of the eastern coast yesterday and is just about out to sea now. Several cities have climbed up the Golden Snow Globe snow mountain this last update but there is still more climbing to do. Most of the new snowfall is from yesterday so we will still have a lot of snow to add to cities like Boston, Worcester, Mass and some of the other cities I’m sure. Plus, Some of the cities weren’t updated for the fact that NOAA is having some problems with the website so I couldn’t get to them. The only cities that may effect the top ten (Until Boston & Worcester snow stats come in) that I can see is Grand Rapids which is showing MM and means that any new snow wasn’t updated for yesterday and Ann Arbor, Michigan. There is a chance that both could jump a spot.

Here are the stand out cities from the storm so far that broke date records. BTW, my brother lives in Philly and shovels a couple of his older neighbors driveways for them. I just talked to him and he said he will be shoveling all day. Kind of feels good today living in snowless Syracuse, New York ;)

* Philadelphia, PA reported 13.5 inches of snow yesterday breaking the date record of 3.4 inches of snow set way back in 1917.

* Central Park in NYC – 11.0 inches breaking the date record of 6.0 inches going back to 2001

* Newark, NJ – 10.0 inches of snow breaking the date record of 4.5 inches set in 2011

* Cincinnati – 5.3 inches beating the old record of 3.8 set in 2007

* Baltimore, Maryland – 5.1 inches setting a new date record of 2.0 set in 1982

* Washington DC – 3.8 inches of new snowfall breaking the record of 3.5 set in 1982
