A Big Thank You to Jim J. and Cathy C. for your donations to the snow site and for taking the time. Also Thank You Both for the kind words and Cathy I am visiting my daughter where unfortunately there is now snow so that won’t be a problem getting to the kind of store you suggest ;) Thanks Jim and Cathy :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that we have a Group page on Facebook and we have a good group of people that have joined so far. Some fun pictures and articles get posted pretty much everyday including people sharing photos from the snow they have received in several different cities this season. No cover charge either ;)

Right now we have people from several different areas including Boston, Worcester, Buffalo, Syracuse, Erie and too many to mention. The group keeps growing by the hour and Thankfully for technology it’s not standing room only and you can sit while talking about the snow you love/hate…

The group is also open to the Weather Pros both local and national forecasters and meteorologists. Also open to any of my good friends in the media and I have noticed a couple of both have joined so far. Most of us are just regular folk talking about how much fun the snow is especially wondering where to put it in some Cities :)

A good place to start your morning with a warm cup of coffee but you most likely won’t see me there. I’ll probably be just going to bed when you wake up. A good place to check out after work to see what’s going on in the snow world and what the current forecasts, predictions and so on are. Did I say it’s a fun group of people who have joined so far ;)

First things first As always! I want to say Thank You to Bonnie C. for your kind donation to the snow site and also for the kind words and for sharing the newsletter with me, I loved it. I truly appreciate you taking the time Bonnie and Thanks again :)

It looks like Worcester, MA was liking it at the top of the snow mountain because they are back on the top. This time they have company though and they are sharing it with Lowell, MA the city that took over the top spot a day or two ago. Play nice up there and enjoy it while you can because I think Syracuse, Erie, Buffalo and a few others have their eye set on the Snow Crown too ;)

I will have to look back to see if there was a tie earlier this season (Don’t count on that ;) ) but it’s always nice when two cities are sitting at the top of the snow mountain. Worcester is a city that has been at the top of the mountain already this season and held it for awhile. Lowell, a city that came out of nowhere this season has been charging up the mountain and now that they are there it may be tough to bump them off the top.

I think the folks in Lowell don’t mind sharing with another fellow city from Massachusetts :) According to the NWS and Shawn Kelley who runs the Mill City Weather page on Facebook, Lowell, MA is closing in on their all time snowiest season’s snow totals of 111.5 set way back in the 1947-1948 season. You can check Mill City Weather out at https://www.facebook.com/MILLCITYWEATHER

Boston just missed passing Buffalo for the number 3 slot on the snow mountain coming up shy of just 0.4 of an inch. Boston continues to add to their snow totals and added another 2.4 inches of fresh snow yesterday. Boston, Mass is only around 5 inches away from the TWO leaders now. How dare I was counting you out not too long ago Boston ;)

Da’Cuse is in the house :) OK, being from Syracuse, NY I always try to keep my posts unbias buttttt. Here come Da’Cuse, Here Come DA’CUSE!!! Hey, every now and then I have to open up a little. Syracuse which is the snowiest Big city on average in the US just got into a snowball fight with Erie, PA and came out the Victors. Syracuse started out slow this season but has begun their late season charge up the mountain once again this season. Syracuse barely slipped past Erie, PA to move into the #5 slot in the Golden Snow Globe contest and are just a little over 8 inches from the TWO leaders, Lowell and Worcester. No doubt this snow race is close with more than normal still having a shot at winning this season. Stay tuned ;)

Feel free to join our FB Group which is open to both snow lovers and haters. Our group has a mix of both in it and there is some good info, pictures and stories being exchanged. Also a good place to be the first to get some breaking news ;) Click Here to Join the Golden Snow Globe Facebook Group, Have an Awesome Day Everyone :)

Erie, Erie, Erie, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha :) I know most of the talk here has been about Erie, Pa, last seasons King of the snow mountain and defending champs but they have had the lead for awhile now. Before Erie it was all about Grand Rapids, MI which held the lead for most of the first half of the 2014-2015 snow season. The good news is that Buffalo, NY and Worcester, MA are keeping the contest close and less than 7 inches separate the top 3 cities. Only a tenth of snow separates Buffalo and Worcester now for 2nd place.. The bad news is that the early snow season favorite Syracuse is almost 2 feet behind the current leader. The double bad news is that I pulled some cities like normal during the second half of the season.

I have been thinking about pulling some cities from the snow contest for a couple of weeks now. The first cities that came to mind were obviously Erie, Buffalo, Worcester and Grand Rapids ;)

Nothing against the cities I pulled but I’ve been getting a couple of updates in each day for a good part of the season and it’s a little too time consuming. In other words it’s pulling me away from my other websites which I count on to eat, lol :) No I don’t need a Wambulance and I’m not whining, I love doing this but between the 2 snow contests, doing research, updating and so on, a normal day is between 6-8 hours and normally more when the big storms hit. Again, I LOVE it but reality sets in :(

By pulling some of the cities which I will check from time to time to see how they are doing I can save a little bit of time. OK, That is my plea for forgiveness and hopefully none of the cities were yours. If one of them are and you will lose sleep over it then let me know and I’ll put the city back in ;) I did leave a couple in that most likely don’t have a chance for the fact that I know people from those cities visit the website on a daily basis. I also get emails every now and then from people serving overseas that check from time to time to see how their city is doing so those cities stay and hopefully I didn’t pull any of them.

I have done this for the past few years and again I do keep an eye on them to see if they should be added back in. Below are the cities that were pulled this time around and again, let me know if there is a problem ;)

St Paul, Minnesota – They have their Twin In it Still ;)
Washington DC – Done well previous seasons only 3.6 inches
Indianapolis, Indiana – Never liked them, I’M JOKING! Only 8.5 and Indiana well represented…
Boise, Idaho – Previously dropped & added back in a few weeks ago. Nothing since so dropped again..
Columbus, Ohio – Ohio is well represented already…
Amarillo, Texas – Cool that they received 17 inches but nothing since.
Pueblo, Colorado – The lowest snow totals of the Colorado cities in contest to date.
Salt Lake City, Utah – Normally a contender but only 6.8 inches on the season.

Feel free to flame away and have an awesome day everyone ;)

WOW, what a long couple of days it’s been crunching numbers, gathering stats and watching the snow storm on the radars and TV but it’s been a blast and it was all worth it :) To be honest I am also jealous.. Probably not quite as fun though for those in the storms path and hopefully everyone is doing OK and is safe!

Just think, about a week or so ago on 1/21 Worcester, Mass was in 27th place in the National Golden Snow Globe contest with 13.9 inches of snowfall for the 2014 – 2015 snow season. They now have 51.1 inches of snow on the season and counting. Boston, Massachusetts was in 45th place with only 5.5 inches of snow on the season and after this last update now have 31.4 inches. What a difference a week makes not to mention a snow storm that will go down in the weather history books and record books. WTG Worcester and Boston ;)

So far the cities that are in the Golden Snow Globe contest that stand out the most are Worcester, MA , Boston and Providence, RI. Below are the storm totals and as always keep in mind my fuzzy math shows up every now and then ;)

Winter Snow Storm Totals as of 4:00 PM 1/27

Worcester – 1/26 = 2.6, 1/27 = 28.4 as of 4 PM Storm Totals = 31 inches
Boston – 1/26 = 2.3, 1/27 = 18.5 as of 4 PM Storm Totals = 20.8 inches
Providence – 1/26 = 3.1, 1/27 = 14.2 as of 4 PM Storm Total = 17.3

A Few Snow Records For the Date That Were Set Today -

Worcester, Mass – 28.4 today breaking the old record of 11.0 set in 2011
Boston, Mass – 18.5 today breaking the old record of 8.8 set in 2011
Providence, RI 14.2 today breaking the old record of 6.7 set in 2011

Worcester has climbed the Golden Snow Globe mountain in record time pushing Syracuse, NY out of the number 4 slot on the mountain and bumping a whole lot of other cities down the snow mountain too. Worcester’s next targets are Grand Rapids and Buffalo ;)

Boston has managed to go from the number 45 slot all the way into the Top 10 at number 10. The thing is that I don’t think either of the cities are finished yet. Last I heard they are still adding to their snow totals. It’s going to get even more interesting when the next round of snow stats come out from the National Weather Service the next update.

I think Grand Rapids, Michigan should be a little worried right about now and maybe, just maybe those of you in Erie, Pa may want to watch your backs the next several hours because Worcester may be heading your way soon. Stay Tuned and Stay Safe All!

Have an Awesome Night!

The headline probably doesn’t make sense about the National snow contest heating up does it but then again most of the stuff I type doesn’t. Snow and heat just don’t mix I suppose but the snowiest big city in the US contest is starting to get a little more exciting. I figure we have at least past the halfway mark for the snow season last week and we are now into the second half of the snow season with a new storm on the way. Click Here for the Latest on Next Snow Storm!

There are cities that are still sitting out of the snowball fights like Anchorage, Alaska and then there are a few that have decided to come and play with all of us like Worcester, Mass which moved up about 16 spots and slid into the top 25 on the snow mountain. Even Amarillo, Texas joined in one of the most recent snowball fights and hit the top 25 for a day or two with 17 inches of snowfall for the 2014 – 2015 season. Allentown, Pa jumped about 13 spots up the snow mountain but still have a ways to go.

A snow dance will take place sometime today or tonight so beware all ;)

The good part is, well if you like snow of course is that the storms seem to be lining right up one after another. The first half of the season only had a couple decent storms and up until recently was pretty much hit or miss with the Lake Effect snow. From what I have been reading it’s looking like some of the same cities that just got hit and that were hanging near the bottom of the snow contest are going to be getting hit again in the next day or two. It looks like there is a possibility for this next storm to drop even more snow on Boston, Worcester and a lot of other cities.

This next storm could make things really interesting because so far from what I have read and I am still reading it looks like the Snowbelt cities such as Erie, Pa, Grand Rapids, Michigan, Syracuse and Buffalo, New York may just get touched by Mother Nature. That seems to be how it has gone for most of the first half of the season :( For that reason it is time for the first SNOW DANCE of the season to take place. Time to give Syracuse the edge in this seasons snow contest and see if the snow dance can bring this storm a little more northwest ;) . Hopefully not too far west though because I don’t need Buffalo or Erie trying to cash in on the well known widely feared snow dance that seems to work well over 80% of the time.

Just a heads up for the Meteorologists that NO your radars and forecasting equipment aren’t going crazy, it’s just me doing a snow dance for Da’Cuse ;) Stay Safe all and take it slow on the roads….

Thanks Samantha O. for donating to the website :) I appreciate it and Thanks for taking the time.

The first column shows this season and the second column shows the snow totals for the cities last season. I changed the update around a bit again this time and posted this seasons snow stats for the snowiest cities in the US as normal but instead of posting what we would all have on average at this time in the season I put the snow totals that we all had at this time last season. What a difference a season makes for a lot of cities.

I just got a full update in and sorry about the last couple of days. I’ve been fighting off something for about the last 2 months and just can’t seem to kick it. Round 3 on meds now :( Doc said to take a week off, lol, I was able to take a day off yesterday. OK, enough about me, for now anyways ;)

Erie, Pa who won last season and is the current leader this season has almost 2 feet less than they did last season. The same with Flint, Michigan, Salt Lake City, Pittsburgh, Pa, Detroit, Toledo and a few other cities.

A lot of the other snowiest Big cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest are right around a foot of snow behind last seasons snow totals and several others are right around where they were last season. Just a few are doing better than they did for the 2013 – 2014 snow season. Just goes to show us that it’s been a pretty easy season so far. Well except for some of the smaller cities around Buffalo and to the North of Syracuse who have been getting pounded this season.

Hopefully this round of meds kicks me into shape again (OK, That will never happen) or should helps me to start felling better again so I can get more blog posts in. I also missed getting back to several email and I’m sorry about that.

Have a Great Night All and Stay Tuned, it looks like some snowy weather could be coming soon.

Updated 1/10 3:00 PM – Erie, Pa is hanging tough at the top of the snow mountain still. As of this mornings update Erie has just a half of an inch snow lead over Grand Rapids, Michigan.

I took a peak at the radar and it looks like it is snowing in or at least around Grand Rapids so the afternoon update should be interesting to see if Erie can hold onto the lead ;)
———————————————

It looks like the is a good snowball fight going on between Erie, Pa and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Last seasons defending snow champs have reclaimed the Throne at the top of the snow mountain once again after Grand Rapids took it back from them with the earlier snow update. Keep an eye on Buffalo too because it looks like they are trying to make a charge up the mountain but are just falling short each time.

Erie, Pa reclaims the top spot showing 50.8 inches of snow so far for the 2014-2015 snow season. Grand Rapids is only a couple of inches behind them reporting a total of 48.7 inches this last update. Both cities have been going back and forth on the snow mountain the last couple of days. Remember that Grand Rapids, Michigan has been the King of The Golden Snow Globe mountain for most of the season.

Here are the lead changes so far give or take a day ;)

Erie, Pa 1/9/2015 – Current Leader

Grand Rapids 1/8/2015 – 1/9/2015

Erie, Pa 1/6/2015 – 1/8/2015

Grand Rapids, Michigan 11/18/2014 – 1/6/2015

Erie, Pa 11/15/2014 – 11/18/2014

South Bend, Indiana – 11/14/2014 – 11/15/2014

Anchorage, Alaska – 10/20/2014 – 11/14/2014

Buffalo, NY is keeping up pretty good now reporting 44.3 inches on the season. It will be interesting to see how much more snow will be added to the snow totals for these cities come the next update. I think Erie may be looking pretty good for the near future but remember I’m clueless and normally wrong :)

South Bend, Indiana slipped past both Billings, Montana and Syracuse, NY this last update so keep an eye on South Bend too. It looks like they are ready to get into the snowball fight ;) My Syracuse has some kind of snow net over them still so could someone please cut a whole in it so that Syracuse can play too. Stay Tuned!

Have a Great Night Everyone and as Always, See Snow – Drive Slow….

First as always a Big Thanks to Thomas R. for your donation to the website. I truly appreciate you taking the time. Thanks Thomas :)

OK, it was fun watching Billings, Montana climb the snow mountain the last week or so but enough that’s enough snow now. Now you are messing with my home town Syracuse, New York ;) I suppose I may as well cheer you on now seeing how you just passed Syracuse and it looks like you are still climbing the snow mountain. OK, Might as well go all the way to the top to make things exciting and I think we are well overdue for a change of the throne. No offense to Grand Rapids of course but there haven’t been a whole lot of lead changes this season.

So far there have only been 4 leaders in the national snow contest for the 2014 – 2015 snow season. Out of the 4 leaders Grand Rapids has by far been sitting at the throne at the top of the snow mountain the longest. That said the snow contest has been close all season long with just a few inches separating some of the top snowiest cities in the U.S..

Here are the cities that have led so far this season and when they held the lead. Keep in mind the dates are give or take a day depending on when an update was done during the snow season.

Anchorage, Alaska – 10/20/2014 – 11/14/2014

South Bend, Indiana – 11/14/2014 – 11/15/2014

Erie, Pa 11/15/2014 – 11/18/2014

Grand Rapids, Michigan 11/18/2014 – Current Leader

Billings Montana continues to move up in the National Snowiest Big City Contest with a population of 100,000 or more and has just jumped another couple of spots. Billings just slid past Syracuse and Buffalo, NY to take the number 3 slot in the contest and from reading around there may still be more snow on the way for them. There was quite a bit of shuffling around with a lot of the cities adding some snow to their totals the last couple of updates.

Sioux Falls, South Dakota has moved up quite a bit the last few days and broke a date record yesterday picking up another 5.0 inches of snow breaking an old record of 3.9 inches on the day set back in 1951. WTG Sioux Falls, SD :)

Have a Great Day Everyone and Stay Safe – See Snow – Drive Slow unless you’re on a sled of course ;)

First off, sorry about the lack of posts lately. I have been able to get a lot of updates in but with the Holidays and trying to keep up my shopping sites it’s been tough finding the time to blog. I have been able to get at least one update in each day and well lets face it, it’s been a pretty boring snow season so far except for those that had that those crazy amounts of snow just outside of the Buffalo area.

I just got a full update in and will try to get at least a Top 25 update in later. Billings, Montana has finally decided to play with us and join the snowball fight. They managed to move into the Top 5 this last update picking up 6 inches of snow since the last update. It will be interesting to see if they have more to add later in the day.

It’s looking like the cold air is getting ready to move in after this little warm up slips by today which hopefully means SNOW :) The Golden Snow Globe contest is really close and looking at the top 25 I think most of the cities that are in the top 25 still have a shot at winning this season. There is still a lot of snow season left whether you/we like it or not…

Grand Rapids has been the King of the Snow Mountain for just about the entire 2014 – 2015 snow season. I think they have held the lead since something like around November 17th when they pushed last seasons snow champs Erie, Pa down the mountain. So far every time one of the cities makes a move to the top of the mountain Grand Rapids has been able to pick up just enough snow to fend us off. WTG Grand Rapids but I think your days are numbered ;)

This week and probably starting tonight things should start getting interesting again with the colder air moving in. Hopefully it will get all of our Lake Effect Machines cranking up and get the snow contest cranking too. I was just thinking how early the snow started falling this season in a lot of places and then pretty much just slowed right down. I suppose the one good thing is it hasn’t been anywhere near as cold as it was last season when that Polar Vortex overstayed it’s welcome.

Have a Great Day All and Stay Tuned!

First, a Big Thank You Cherie B. for your donation.  As always I deeply appreciate you taking the time :)

Updated 1/1/2015 7 PM – Congrats to Grand Rapids, Michigan for ending 2014 as the King of the Snow Mountain and starting the new year, 2015 with the lead ;)

Grand Rapids has been quiet just like most of the other cities lately but when they see another city trying to sneak up on them they find a way to get Mother Nature to sneeze over them and give them just enough snow to stay in the lead. I thought Buffalo was going to take the top spot but Grand Rapids managed to get just enough snowflakes. The same pretty much goes for Buffalo and Erie, Pa protecting their spots on the snow mountain. They both keep getting just enough to fend off any snowball attacks. Loving how close the race is so far and some of the lower cities are also sneaking up a little at a time. Stay Tuned ;)
————————————–

I just wanted to say Thanks to all of you, both new to the snow site and to those of you who visit our fun snow contest season after season. Obviously if it wasn’t for you the National Snowiest Big City Contest wouldn’t be any fun. I would also like to Thank the media who continues to have fun with the snow contest year after year and help spread the word around about it. A Big Thanks to All of you for the fun, the comments, the emails and the donations. It keeps it fun and helps pass the winter months by.

We have also had several donations to the snow site through the years that help out a lot with expenses and they also offset the time that is put into the website. So far this season I figure close to 250 hours have been put into keeping the site updated. It does pull me away from my livelihood websites a little but believe me it’s a nice break and something I really love doing BTW and love seeing the new snow stats just as much as most of you do. Words can’t express how much I appreciate those of you for taking the time to make donations to the site. No this isn’t a solicitation, just a big Thanks ;)

Below are a few statistic that I found interesting in watching the National snow site grow. Keep in mind that these stats are for the entire year and not for the snow seasons.  Also keep in mind that this was one of the slowest Decembers in awhile and if it was like last season we may have hit close to a quarter of a million visitors this year :)

Year          Unique Visitors            Total Visitors        Visitors Page Views
—–               —————                 ———–                  ——————–
2011                13,384                        20,101                      58,758
2012                51,916                        78,722                    227,728
2013              214,338                      327,234                    644,188
2014              379,395                      634,557               1,427,4944

The media has also played a Huge part in getting word out to people that have never even heard of the national snow contest, The Golden Snow Globe so a Big Thanks to all of you. There are too many to name (OK, Remember :( ) but there have been many articles since the snowiest big city in the US contest started back in the 2009 – 2010 season. Some of the papers and sites that come to mind are Syracuse.com and the Post Standard in Syracuse, The media from both Erie and Buffalo, Erie, Pa Life on Facebook, cnycentral.com and Mike Brookins, The Washington Post, USA Today and many others. A few of the radio stations including WMCE.FM, 88.5 in Erie thanks to Captain Dan Geary and that wild and crazy guy in Billings, Montana on The Big J Show ;) There are so many more that I will have to look up and Thanks.

The last I looked the most visitors last year (season) came from Erie, Pa and I am happy that a lot of you from Erie and posted comments and I was able to make some online friends from Erie and all across the country :) Of course something about Erie holding the lead and winning last season could have something to do with that stat ;) One thing that I noticed last month if the stats were right was that The Golden Snow Globe website was ranked in the top 1000 websites visited by residents of Erie, Pa. I think with something like over half a billion sites online that was pretty cool and WTG Erie

Syracuse was second in the amount of visitors that visited the National Snow site thanks to the articles put out by Sean Kirst, Glenn Coin from Syracuse.com and the Post and also a big thanks to CNYCentral.com in Syracuse. I believe my good friends to the west of me Buffalo had the third most visitors to the site. Tens of thousand of visitors from across the United States and also from service people stationed in other countries checking to see how their home towns are doing in the winter.

I’ll be tweaking this post to add more of the media that have helped make this a fun, successful site in the near future…

Thanks again everyone and Have a Super Happy New Year which is hopefully filled with plenty of snow ;)
