Updated 11/20 - Just a quick post to say Congrats to Anchorage, Alaska for being the first Big city with a pop of 100,000 or more to be the first city to join the 1 foot of snow club this season. It should be interesting to see if any of the other cities will join you now that some cold air is around. WTG Anchorage :)

Snowiest city in the United States

————————————————-

11/19 – OK, Compared to last season at this time, a lot of the Big cities in the snowiest city in the US contest have less snow so far to date. There are a handful of cities that really stand out and a few that have less than a foot, almost 2 feet less snow than they did last year at this time in the snow season.

Grand Rapids, Michigan as of yesterday is only showing a Trace of snow so far for the 2015-2016 snow season. Last season at this time they had 23.4 inches of snowfall at this time. If it seems like a nice Winter season so far for you folks in Grand Rapids, it is. Almost two feet of snow behind the 2014-2015 season :)

Erie, Pennsylvania which only has a Trace of snow also so far looked like they were going for a repeat win last season starting out strong with 17.8 inches of snow at this time last season. Erie, Pa was competitive as always but too many storms, lake effect events just missed them. If it wasn’t for the near misses Erie’s totals probably would have been a couple feet higher by the end of the season. Stop slacking Erie and get it going. You have 17+ inches to catch up to last season :P

South Bend Indiana also started out really strong at the beginning of last season. South Bend had 17 inches of snow by now. Right now South Bend is reporting just a Trace of snowfall this season also.

A couple others who are dragging this season are Cleveland, Ohio and Boise, Idaho. Cleveland had 9.4 inches of snow last season compared to 0.1 inches so far this season. Boise had 7.6 inches about this time in the 2014-2016 snow season compared to 0.8 inches of snow as of yesterday.

The list goes on and on with cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest that are below the amount of snow that they had last season at this time. In fact most of the cities are behind what their average snowfall shoulf be for this time of the year. I have a feeling that several of the cities will be catching up in the next week or so though with some cold air moving into some of the cities. Stay Tuned ;) Click Here for Current Snow Totals!

Have an Awesome Night Everyone!

It may be a good time to place your bet as to whether it will be Anchorage, Alaska or Reno, Nevada in first place come the next update later on this afternoon. A big Thanks to Tyler for giving me the heads up on Reno, NV :)

Reno is showing 2.4 inches of snow for the new 2015 – 2016 snow season which is enough to slide them into the number 2 spot on the snow mountain. WTG Reno! According to Tyler it sounds like Reno will be adding to their totals once the overnight snow totals are reported later on. They are/were under a winter advisory until 10:00 am.

Reno, NV also set a snowfall record for the date which goes way, way back. Reno set the date record with 2.4 inches yesterday breaking the old record of 2.0 inches that was set back in 1915. Welcome to the Golden Snow Globe contest Reno and enjoy being near the top of the snow mountain while you can. The rest of the cities will be throwing snowballs at you pretty soon I’m sure.

Have a Great day everyone ;)

Snowiest Top 5 Cities in the United States 2015 – 2016

Here it November 6th and we finally have a Top 5 list for the snowiest Big cities in the nation. The current list would have been from the end of the day on the 5th for most of the cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest.

Anchorage, Alaska continues to add to their lead and added another inch of snow since the last update. It seems like Anchorage either gets quite a bit of snow or next to nothing each season. Anchorage did win the snow contest back in the 2011 – 2012 snow season with 134.5 inches of snow.

Snowiest US Cities with Snow

Denver, Colorado slipped past Syracuse, New York picking up an inch of snow since the last update. That was the measurable snow for Denver this season. Syracuse is stuck at 0.4 inches right now and I’m sure that the temperatures being in the 70′s in the northeast has something to do with that. Record temps have been set the last few days for several cities in the northeast and I’m guessing they are in no hurry to stop breaking them.

Rochester, Minnesota remains in 4th place at 0.2 inches and the other newcomer to receive snow this season besides Denver is Cleveland, Ohio which is showing 0.1 inches so far for the 2015 – 2016 snow season. Welcome to the new snow season Denver and Cleveland. Cleveland’s snow may be an adjustment or an error because they weren’t showing snow as of the last update so that may change.

Golden Snow Globe Cities Below Average Snow

Almost all of the cities in the National Golden Snow Globe contest are below their average snowfall for this date, but I don’t expect that to last much longer. Remember, the National snow contest is for cities with a population of 100,000 or more as of the 2010 census. If you know of a Big city that we may be missing that has snow already this season then feel free to add a comment to this post and let me know ;)

Feel free to join our snow group on Facebook. It’s a fun group of men and women of all ages, both snow lovers and haters from all over the country. CLICK HERE to JOIN OUR SNOW GROUP!

Stay Tuned and have an Awesome day everyone!

Congrats to Syracuse, New York on being the second Big city with a population of 100,000 or more to get some snow for the new 2015 – 2016 snow season. Anchorage, Alaska started off this season’s snow contest a little while back picking up 2.8 inches of snow.

Syracuse, NY is reporting 0.4 inches for yesterday, 10/18 and although it isn’t a lot of snow it is enough to move them into second place in the Golden Snow Globe contest. A few smaller towns not too far from Syracuse received up to 9 inches of snow.

With the cold in the air, there were a lot of snowflakes falling, but so far Syracuse is the only city to report measurable snow in the last couple of days. If you know or hear of any other cities with a population of 100,000 or more please leave a comment here to let us know and Thanks ;)

So after the last couple of days with the cold air that blew into the north and northeast we now have a bunch of cities that have received some snowflake to give them a trace of snow. 18 of the Golden Snow Globe cities are reporting at least a trace of snow. We are off to a good start and I have a feeling it’s going to be a fun snow contest once again this season :)

Stay Tuned and Have an Awesome Day Everyone!

Updated 5/18/2015 - First as always I want to give a Big Thanks to Stephanie S. for your recent donation to the snow site and to all of you that have donated throughout the season. I really appreciate you taking the time and it helps out a lot, Thanks

I had a chance this weekend to talk to Kim Buttrick who is the person in charge of the CoOps at the Boston NWS office about Lowell, Ma’s snow stats. The obvious question was why did Lowell’s snow totals rise a couple of inches and to find out if it was was I thought, an adjustment or correction from a previous date.

I’ve talked to Kim a couple of times and she is such a nice person and really takes the time to clarify things for me. This time she went over all of the data that was reported along with explaining to me how it works as far as getting reports from Lowell which explained a lot ;)

Kim told me that the person that takes the measurements for Lowell, MA which are recorded at the Water Treatment Plant there will punch in the numbers each day using the phone. There are times when mistakes are made punching in the snow data and that is why they also fill out a manual form so that they have a hard copy of it also.

Kim then compares the data that was punched in by phone with the hard copy form that she receives each month with the written snow totals. She then makes any corrections or adjustment that need to be made. I see several NWS Offices making adjustments for several cities throughout the season and always have since I have been keeping the snow totals for the cities. Obviously the reason this one stands out so much is because the correction put Lowell in the lead. There is no conspiracy going on by the NWS and I can assure you they have no interest in the snow contest or the outcome of it ;)

Kim told me that there were a few corrections throughout the season for Lowell but the two that made the difference were what I posted below. March 22nd a correction was made and 1.5 inches of snow was added. Another was made on March 29th where 0.5 inches was added to Lowell’s snow totals. The math adds up giving Lowell the 2 new inches of snow which put them in the lead as of my last update.

A Big Thank You Kim for helping us out and explaining how things work with the NWS and also for taking the time to do so. Thanks Kim :)

OK, now that the controversy is cleared up it’s time to talk about when the snow contest ends. Normally I will call it a wrap by now but with the lead only half an inch I don’t feel comfortable calling it yet. IMO the chances are pretty good that the snowfall is over for Lowell, Worcester and Syracuse but I think I am going to ride it out a little longer. It’s been a pretty funky snow season for a lot of cities and I want to make sure the funkiness is over ;) For now Lowell is in the lead and stay tuned for any update or maybe even some more adjustments ;)

Have an Awesome Day Everyone :)

First as always I want to give a Big Thanks to John A. for your recent donation to the snow site and to all of you that have donated throughout the season. I really appreciate you taking the time and it helps out a lot

Congrats to Lowell, Massachusetts on taking the lead in the National snow contest. Yup, you read it right and Lowell is the new leader right now in the 2014-2015 Golden Snow Globe snowiest Big city in the US contest.

Contrary to what you may have read in a few articles, the snow contest goes on like it or not until the last snow flake falls :) . Yes, the National snow contest is still going on and while you all have been enjoying the warm weather I am still sitting at the computer crunching numbers. OK, not really and I am enjoying the nice weather but I do check the snow stats every now and then.

I’ve have been checking the snow stats every now and then and for whatever reason had a feeling that Lowell was going to have some kind of adjustment to their snow totals. This happens with a lot of the cities throughout the snow season and adjustments were made a few times this season with Lowell, Ma.. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been snowing there so no doubt adjustments were made.

I took a look back to see if I could tell when the adjustments were made. The best I could come up with is that perhaps snow was added for the dates of March 22nd and March 29th. On March 22nd Lowell shows 1.5 inches of snow and on March 29th there is 0.5 inches being reported. Tha would add up to the 2.0 inches of new snow that must have been added to Lowell’s snow totals.

Syracuse, NY and Worcester, Ma were in a tie for the top spot in the snow contest up until this last update. I don’t think Syracuse and Worcester natives are going to be happy campers getting bumped down a spot after camping out on top of the snow mountain together since around April 24th.

Frost is on the forecast for tonight in parts of the North East and it will be interesting to see if any of the cities can throw in some snow while it’s that cold. Hard to believe that some of the cities are going from 80+-degree weather to maybe below freezing in a matter of a day or two.

Will there be anymore adjustment or snow falling? Stay Tuned, The Snow Contest Lives and Congrats to Lowell on Taking the Lead ;)

First as always I want to give a Big Thanks to John A. for your recent donation to the snow site. Even though the season is winding down, the bills still need to be paid throughout the year. Thank You John, I really appreciate you taking the time and it helps out a lot :)

Syracuse and Worcester Share Top Spot in National Snow Contest

It’s official according to the National Weather Service as of yesterday’s snow stats we have a tie between Worcester, Massachusetts and Syracuse, New York. As of Right now the score is 119.7 to 119.7 :)

So for Now, Congrats to Syracuse on playing catch up and getting just enough snow to move to the top of the Golden Snow Globe mountain. Worcester has held the top spot alone for quite some time now. Let’s hope that Worcester is happy to have some company (Not) and that both of you can play nice together.

I’m guessing that both Syracuse and Worcester are still making snowballs in hopes of at least one more snowball fight to see which city can claim the bragging rights as the snowiest Big city (pop of 100,000) in the United States.
Don’t forget about Lowell, MA either because it won’t take a whole lot of snow for them to sneak past both Syracuse and Worcester.

Good Luck and Stay Tuned ;)

First off as always I want to give a Big Thanks to Tom P. for your generous donation to the site. It really helps out and I appreciate you taking the time. Thanks Tom :)

OK, I thought with the snow contest being this close that it would be interesting to see how an average (no such thing as average ;) ) April is for the Top 7 cities in the snow contest this season.

Below is how April normally plays out for the cities listed including what the record snowfall is for April and the season that it happened. I went with the current Top 7 snowiest big cities in the country as of 4/2/2015.

I was a little surprised to see that Rochester, New York on average receives the most snow in April out of the cities listed below. I was also surprised to see that Rochester and Boston have the highest snowfall for April in the past seasons. With the National snow contest this close, it will be fun to see how April plays out :)

All of the stats are from the National Weather Service. The dates next to the city name is the date that the NWS started keeping records for that city I believe.

Updated 3/2/15 - According to the National Weather Service’s last update Worcester, Massachusetts has once again taken the top of the snow mountain away from Lowell, MA. Both cities have been having their own little snowball fight and it looks like Worcester came out on top this round.

I think it’s time for a couple of the other cities to start playing at the top of the mountain. It will take less than 4 inches for Syracuse to take the top spot in the snowiest Big city snow contest and they are sitting in 3rd place right now.

Less than 10 inches separate the Top 6 cities right now and we all know that is just a storms throw away for any of the cities moving into the number 1 spot. Snow is in the forecast for a lot of the ities this week so you know it is going to be a interesting and better yet a fun week ahead. Have a great day and look for another update later in the day :)

3/1 - I can finally say to last seasons snow champs Welcome to The 100 Inch Club Erie, Pennsylvania :) Erie has been hanging at the 99 inch mark for a few days now but finally managed to pick up enough snow to join the club. It gets even better for Erie, you just slipped past Boston, MA to move into the number 5 slot on the snow mountain. WTG Erie and keep it snowing ;)

We now have 6 Big cities (pop of 100,000 or more) in the 100 inches of snow club which are Lowell, Boston and Worcester, MA, Buffalo and Syracuse, NY and now Erie, PA. It’s a close snow race and any of those cities have a shot at winning the National snow contest this season. Let’s see if a few of the other cities can also make a comeback before the snowflakes stop falling. Of course that could be sometime in May the way the 2nd half of the season has been playing out :)

A lot of the cities in the snow contest added new snow to their totals today and it’s still snowing in a lot of them still. Tomorrow should be interesting and I have a feeling the Top 5 may change again. Stay tuned and welcome to the club Erie, it’s about time you decided to start playing again…

Have an Awesome Night Everyone and be careful out there…

Updated 2/27 3:00 PM – First off I want to give a shout out and a Big Thanks to David M. for your kind donation to the snow site. Thank You David for helping out and taking the time to do so :)

OK, I still haven’t been able to confirm that the snow stats being posted for Lowell are correct but after looking around a little more it seems that the numbers do add up. Read below for a more detailed explanation and hopefully I will be able to get a hold of the person I need to come tomorrow. Stay Tuned.
———————————

I think Abbot and Costello’s Who’s on First says it all. The title pretty much sums up yesterday and today in the National snow contest. I have sent out a tweet and also made a phone call but unfortunately it’s still up in the air as to which city is winning right now. I am going to do my best to explain what’s going on and it won’t be easy believe me. Below is what I posted in our Facebook Snow group.

2/26 - OK, here is the problem I am having with the snow stats and why no update last night and this morning. I did just post an update but keep in mind IT IS NOT OFFICIAL yet.

OK, Lowell, Ma went from 103.9 to 109.3 last evening. First off it’s unusual for an evening update to come out for Lowell and any of the cities that report in the Now Data section. Second I want to make sure it isn’t a typo and that they didn’t just mix the 3 and 9 up. The numbers are very close to each other, 103.9 & 109.3 that it would be easy to do.

I did make a phone call to the Boston National Weather office trying to confirm Lowell, MA’s snow totals. The person I talked to couldn’t confirm the totals and the person that I really need to speak to there won’t be in until Saturday :(

I’m sure she will be able to clear things up.. From what they are showing right now would move Lowell into 1st place which is great unless of course you are from Worcester. I just don’t want to jump the snowbank on this until I can confirm it. I also sent a tweet to the Boston NWS last night asking about the new totals for Lowel and their reply was :

From NWS Boston – “I can tell you they did not receive that much snow last night. It may have been a typo, but I can not confirm.”.

For Lowell and a handful of other cities I have to get snow stats from the NWS site using the Now Data on the site. I won’t get into that but it’s different than the way I get most of the city snow stats.

Bruce, one of the member in our FB snow group pretty much summed it up – Bruce saaid –

“So, the dilemma is…did they correct an old typo, make a new typo, or update flawed previous data? And Patrick DeCoursey, you’re left trying to figure out how you should figure it out……does that sum it up?”.

Bruce is pretty much dead on and hopefully come Saturday everything will be all back to normal. for how long, Hey, I’m on third and I don’t know ;) In the mean time keep in mind that everything is UNOFFICIAL right now as far as whether Worcester or Lowell, MA is leading.

So to wrap it up I leave you with this classic Whos on First from Abbott and Costello :)

Have an Awesome Evening Everyone and Stay Tuned….
