Congrats Lakewood, Colorado 2015-2016 Snowiest Big City in US

Lakewood, Colorado Wins Golden Snow Globe Contest

Congratulations to Lakewood, Colorada for being the officially, unofficial snowiest big city in the United states for the 2015-2016 snow season. Believe it or not, any snow that falls up until June 30th still counts for the 2015-2016 snow season. I feel pretty confident calling the snow contest and the winner right now with Lakewood having over a foot of snow more than Syracuse, New York, and a 20+ inch lead over Fort Collins and Denver Colorado as of this posting. The only reason I waited this long to call it was because of the Colorado cities still having a chance for some snow. I will update the seasonal snow stats as/if needed.

Lakewood,Co received some decent late season snow that dropped more than enough snow to skate past the normal season favorite Syracuse, New York which held the lead a couple times this season. Lakewood also slipped past Erie, Pa, South Bend, Indiana, Flint, Michigan and Sioux Falls which were holding the top 5 spots on or around March 3rd. At that time, Lakewood was in 6th place, 20+ inches behind the leader then, Syracuse, New York.

Even though it was a mild winter for a lot of the cities this season the snow contest was pretty close and exciting once the snow finally did start falling. There were several lead changes throughout the 2015-2016 snow season and what made it fun was that it was a mix of cities on the top or near the top from all over the US. A couple that you wouldn’t expect including Lakewood, CO which as of right now has almost 40 inches of snow above their normal snowfall for the season compared to Syracuse, NY which has a snow deficit of over 40 inches this season. How The 2015-2016 Snow Season Started

Anchorage, Alaska started off the 2015-2016 Golden Snow Globe contest when I did an update on September 30th. The National Weather Service was reporting 2.8 inches of snow and was the only city reporting measurable snowfall. A few others were showing just a trace of snow. Syracuse, NY was the next city to report some measurable snow on or around October 18th-19th, 2015.

Finally a Top 10 Snowiest City List

We finally had a Top 5 list for snowiest Big cities in the United States around November 6th and didn’t have a top 10 list until November 17th when there were 12 cities reporting measurable snowfall. Anchorage, Alaska was still in the lead with 9.6 inches of snow. Below is pretty much how this season played out as far as cities that led the snow contest at one time or another. Keep in mind that the National Weather Service updates the snow stats the next day for the previous day so the dates are give or take a day

Lead Changes in The 2015-2016 National Golden Snow Globe Contest

9/30 – Anchorage, Alaska started the 2015-2016 Golden Snow Globe contest on or around September 30th

12/15 – Lakewood, Colorado takes the lead with 24.0 inches of snow. Anchorage is in 2nd with 22.2 inches.

* NOTE – Come Christmas day, Reno, Nevada had 10.5 inches of snowfall. Reno is beating Erie, Pa which only has 4.8 inches. Rochester, NY has 1.2, Syracuse has 0.8 inches on Christmas day, Buffalo, NY is showing just a tenth of an inch and Worcester, MA is only reporting a trace of snow on the season. WOW! It gets better! Last season’s snow champs, Lowell, MA doesn’t even have a snowflake yet

12/29 – Sioux Falls, South Dakota takes the lead from Lakewood, CO with a snow total of 32.7 inches of snow on the season.

* NOTE – 1/15 – About Halfway through January the snow contest started getting more exciting with the Northeast cities finally starting to get into the snowball fight

1/20 – Erie, PA takes the lead from Sioux Falls, SD by two-tenths of an inch posting 42.3 inches. Sioux Falls has 42.1 inches of snow.

1/25 – Sioux Falls started packing the snowballs and took the lead back from Erie, Pa. Syracuse has been hanging in 3rd place just waiting to slide to the top on the snow mountain.

1/29 – Erie, PA takes slips back to the top with leading Sioux Falls by half an inch.

2/2 – While Erie and Sioux Falls were battling it out this season’s snow champs Lakewood, CO slipped past both of them by just over an inch of snow

2/10 – At this point in the snow season there was a lot of back and forth going on. Erie, PA slides to the top again!

2/14 – Yayyyy! Syracuse, NY finally climbed to the top of the snow mountain for the first time this season. Yeah, I’m from Syracuse so I can say Yayyyy

2/16 – OK, so much for my Yayyyy Erie, PA retakes the lead!

3/2 – Buh Bye Erie, Hello Syracuse

3/24 – Lakewood had more than enough time away from the top to make some snowballs and they put them to good use retaking the lead

4/3 – I was surprised that Syracuse got some decent snowfall in April to slip past Lakewood by almost 6 inches of snow come 4/4 and Syracuse was at 80.4 inches on the season. Well below their normal average but hey, seemed like enough. Us folks in Syracuse were pretty much ready to do a victory dance

4/17 – Lakewood gets pounded with snow on or around the 16th and 17 and picks up 16 inches of snow. No, really they did. Can you say snow season and contest over Lakewood sleds to the top of the Golden Snow Globe mountain and sets up camp. Ain’t no city gonna touch em after that. 16 inches of snow in April, you deserve to be crowned the snow champs for the snowiest big city in the United States. Way to go Lakewood, Colorado

5/24 – The funny part is that Lakewood and all of the Colorado cities continued to pile up snow after they got hammered by that storm. That was why I was a little hesitant to call the contest. I was waiting to see if Denver or Fort Collins, CO could catch Lakewood. With a 20+ inch lead right now I feel pretty confident that Lakewood will be the snowiest big city in the United States with a population of 100.000 or more. If something changes then the snow contest will go on. That said, Congrats Lakewood and well deserved We had 14 lead changes this season give or take a couple which isn’t too bad considering the lack of snow for a lot of cities.

It Was a Fun National Snow Contest This Season

So, all in all, this season’s national Golden Snow Globe contest for snowiest Big cities in the United States turned out to be a fun snow race and exciting too. It’s obviously all of you that visit the snow site and our Facebook snow group page that made it so much fun. A Big Thanks to all of you for helping to make the 2015-2016 snow season a blast. That also includes all of you news folks out there that wrote about the snow contest and also the Meteorologists who helped out by keeping us informed.

A special Thanks to those of you that were able to donate to the snow site. The donations help out a lot not to mention always keep me motivated, lol

Compare The 2014-2015 Snow Season To The 2015-2016

What City Was Winning Snow Contest This Time Last Season

I thought it would be fun to compare last season (2014-2015) with this snow season (2015-2016) to see how the cities are doing as we come down the home stretch You can compare the cities snow totals to date for both seasons in the chart below. Keep in mind there will be some new cities that were added this snow season just to mix it up and also some cities that were dropped.

I think there are two things that stand out the most. Number one being where the heck is Lowell, Massachusetts and the other MA cities this season? Lowell, MA is the defending National Big city snow champs from the 2014-2015 snow season. You will have to scroll down quite a bit to find Lowell this season as they are currently in 39th place right now. Lowell, MA has 88.7 inches less snow this season compared to last season at this time.

If you remember, last season it was a two-way tie between Worcester, Ma and Syracuse, NY at the end of the season when Mother Nature sneezed and gave Lowell just enough snow to win the Golden Snow Globe snow contest. Or maybe it was an adjustment, wink, wink Last season was as close as it could have gotten and was a lot of fun. I’m pretty sure we will have a different snow champ this season, no offense to those of you from Lowell but I don’t think there are enough snow storms left this season to make up 40+ inches of snow.

The second thing that stands out the most is the snow totals or should I say lack of snow totals. This could be the first season since starting the snow contest back in the 2009-2010 season that the winning city may have under 100 inches of snow. Syracuse, NY, the current leader is still almost 30 inches away from 100 inches as of this posting. WOW, what a wimpy snow season for a lot of cities so far. Yes, even though nice weather is taking over I don’t think we are quite done yet

Snowiest Big City in United States Getting Interesting

The national Golden Snow Globe contest for snowiest big cities is getting even more interesting now that some of the Northeast cities have come out to play. Sioux Falls, SD has been leading the snow contest for awhile now but some cold air has finally hit most of the North East.

For most of the 2015-2016 snow season, it’s been the cities in the Western United states and Mid US hanging near the top of the Golden Snow Globe mountain. The last several days the artci air has finally moved into the eastern have of the US bringing some decent snowfall to some of the cities that are normally camped out by now on top of the snow mountain.

Cities like Syracuse and Buffalo, NY, Erie, PA and Grand Rapids, MI have been camping at the bottom of the snow mountain up until the last few days. Most of those cities weren’t even in the top 30 just a couple of days ago. With the cold air moving in over the warmer than normal Great Lakes the Lake Effect Machines finally started to crank out some snow for the cities near the lakes.

The cities from MAssachuesettes seem to be staying out of the snowball fights so far this season though Last seasons snow champ Lowell, MA wasn’t even in the Top 50 as of the last update. Come on out and play Boston, Worcester and Lowell. You’ll have fun. Don’t count them out yet because I’m pretty sure that the snow storms that hit that neck of the woods last season didn’t start for at least another week or so. Plenty of time for them to play catch-up

No doubt this is going to be a fun snow contest now that most of the cities have come out to play in the snow. It will be interesting to see if the cities to the northeast can play catch up now. I’m pretty sure they are going to keep getting the snow for awhile but chances are so are the cities at the top.

It’s been a little quiet snow-wise in Sioux Falls the last week or so but Anchorage, Alaska just started adding new snow totals again, the Colorado cities seem to be adding a little every now and then and go figure, even some of the cities in Texas keep adding a little snowfall to their snow totals..

Lake Michigan has been cranking out some decent snowfall for the cities that rely on lake effect from that lake which I am guessing is still warmer than it normally is this time along with the other Great Lakes so stay tuned for a fun snow filled 2-3 months ahead.

How Lowell, Ma Moved into 1st in National Snow Contest

I had a chance this weekend to talk to Kim Buttrick who is the person in charge of the CoOps at the Boston NWS office about Lowell, Ma’s snow stats. The obvious question was why did Lowell’s snow totals rise a couple of inches and to find out if it was was I thought, an adjustment or correction from a previous date.

I’ve talked to Kim a couple of times and she is such a nice person and really takes the time to clarify things for me. This time she went over all of the data that was reported along with explaining to me how it works as far as getting reports from Lowell which explained a lot

Kim told me that the person that takes the measurements for Lowell, MA which are recorded at the Water Treatment Plant there will punch in the numbers each day using the phone. There are times when mistakes are made punching in the snow data and that is why they also fill out a manual form so that they have a hard copy of it also.

Kim then compares the data that was punched in by phone with the hard copy form that she receives each month with the written snow totals. She then makes any corrections or adjustment that need to be made. I see several NWS Offices making adjustments for several cities throughout the season and always have since I have been keeping the snow totals for the cities. Obviously the reason this one stands out so much is because the correction put Lowell in the lead. There is no conspiracy going on by the NWS and I can assure you they have no interest in the snow contest or the outcome of it

Kim told me that there were a few corrections throughout the season for Lowell but the two that made the difference were what I posted below. March 22nd a correction was made and 1.5 inches of snow was added. Another was made on March 29th where 0.5 inches was added to Lowell’s snow totals. The math adds up giving Lowell the 2 new inches of snow which put them in the lead as of my last update.

OK, now that the controversy is cleared up it’s time to talk about when the snow contest ends. Normally I will call it a wrap by now but with the lead only half an inch I don’t feel comfortable calling it yet. IMO the chances are pretty good that the snowfall is over for Lowell, Worcester and Syracuse but I think I am going to ride it out a little longer. It’s been a pretty funky snow season for a lot of cities and I want to make sure the funkiness is over For now Lowell is in the lead and stay tuned for any update or maybe even some more adjustments

Buh Bye Worcester and Syracuse, Lowell, Ma Leads Snow Contest

Congrats to Lowell, Massachusetts on taking the lead in the National snow contest. Yup, you read it right and Lowell is the new leader right now in the 2014-2015 Golden Snow Globe snowiest Big city in the US contest.

Contrary to what you may have read in a few articles, the snow contest goes on like it or not until the last snow flake falls . Yes, the National snow contest is still going on and while you all have been enjoying the warm weather I am still sitting at the computer crunching numbers. OK, not really and I am enjoying the nice weather but I do check the snow stats every now and then.

I’ve have been checking the snow stats every now and then and for whatever reason had a feeling that Lowell was going to have some kind of adjustment to their snow totals. This happens with a lot of the cities throughout the snow season and adjustments were made a few times this season with Lowell, Ma.. I’m pretty sure it hasn’t been snowing there so no doubt adjustments were made.

I took a look back to see if I could tell when the adjustments were made. The best I could come up with is that perhaps snow was added for the dates of March 22nd and March 29th. On March 22nd Lowell shows 1.5 inches of snow and on March 29th there is 0.5 inches being reported. Tha would add up to the 2.0 inches of new snow that must have been added to Lowell’s snow totals.

Syracuse, NY and Worcester, Ma were in a tie for the top spot in the snow contest up until this last update. I don’t think Syracuse and Worcester natives are going to be happy campers getting bumped down a spot after camping out on top of the snow mountain together since around April 24th.

Frost is on the forecast for tonight in parts of the North East and it will be interesting to see if any of the cities can throw in some snow while it’s that cold. Hard to believe that some of the cities are going from 80+-degree weather to maybe below freezing in a matter of a day or two.

April Average Snowfall and Record Snowfall for Top Snowiest Cities

OK, I thought with the snow contest being this close that it would be interesting to see how an average (no such thing as average ) April is for the Top 7 cities in the snow contest this season.

Below is how April normally plays out for the cities listed including what the record snowfall is for April and the season that it happened. I went with the current Top 7 snowiest big cities in the country as of 4/2/2015.

I was a little surprised to see that Rochester, New York on average receives the most snow in April out of the cities listed below. I was also surprised to see that Rochester and Boston have the highest snowfall for April in the past seasons. With the National snow contest this close, it will be fun to see how April plays out

All of the stats are from the National Weather Service. The dates next to the city name is the date that the NWS started keeping records for that city I believe.

Worcester, MA Snows Past Syracuse, NY to Lead National Snow Contest

Worcester, MA picked up another 2.4 inches of new snow yesterday to slip past Syracuse, NY and Lowell, MA to move into the #1 spot on the snow mountain. WTG Worcester

Worcester is now blowing away Syracuse by 0.1 of an inch of snow. OK, blowing away may be a bit strong but I am impressed at how close the 2014-2015 snow race is right now and every tenth of an inch matters right now. Here we are just a couple of days away from April and there are still plenty of cities still getting snow across the country.

Every snowflake counts right now because sooner or later (later ) the warm air has to move into the U.S. and stay for good. Right now, less than an inch of snow separates the Top 3 cities in the snow contest which are Worcester and Lowell, Massachusetts and Syracuse, New York.

In my opinion, there are at least 5 cities still in the running for the National Snow King title for snowiest Big cities and perhaps even 7 cities depending on how the next several days play out. Syracuse has been pretty quiet the last few days while a few of the other cities have been slowly adding to their totals. Buffalo has been closing the gap on Syracuse which could play out big time in the NY Golden Snowball snow contest.

Stay Tuned because this snow race is far from being over. I just hope I am not counting snowflakes til the end of June Have a Great Day All…

Syracuse, NY has taken over the top spot on the snow mountain and is now the snowiest Big city (pop – 100,000 or more)in the Country. The question now is seeing how the national snow contest is so close can Syracuse hold on to it? WTG Syracuse

Syracuse managed to just slip past Worcester, MA to take over the top spot but the snow contest is really close with at least a handful of cities still in the running for the bragging rights of snowiest big city in the country.

I’ll have to look back but I believe this is the first time that Syracuse has been able to climb all the way to the top of the snow mountain. Grand Rapids held on to the number 1 spot for a good part of the snow season. Erie, PA managed to reach the peak and held on to the lead for quite awhile until a snowball fight broke out between Worcester and Lowell, MA. Those two cities went back and forth at the top for a little while before Worcester managed to take control of the throne at the top of the mountain

Syracuse got a slow start to the 2014-2015 snow season and has been slowing inching their way to the top since around February. I have a feeling that we will still be seeing several more lead changes before one of the cities gets enough of a snow cushion to ride it out on the top of the mountain until the warm weather settles in for good. OK, I still haven’t been able to confirm that the snow stats being posted for Lowell are correct but after looking around a little more it seems that the numbers do add up. Read below for a more detailed explanation and hopefully I will be able to get a hold of the person I need to come tomorrow. Stay Tuned.

I think Abbot and Costello’s Who’s on First says it all. The title pretty much sums up yesterday and today in the National snow contest. I have sent out a tweet and also made a phone call but unfortunately it’s still up in the air as to which city is winning right now. I am going to do my best to explain what’s going on and it won’t be easy believe me. Below is what I posted in our Facebook Snow group.

2/26 - OK, here is the problem I am having with the snow stats and why no update last night and this morning. I did just post an update but keep in mind IT IS NOT OFFICIAL yet.

OK, Lowell, Ma went from 103.9 to 109.3 last evening. First off it’s unusual for an evening update to come out for Lowell and any of the cities that report in the Now Data section. Second I want to make sure it isn’t a typo and that they didn’t just mix the 3 and 9 up. The numbers are very close to each other, 103.9 & 109.3 that it would be easy to do.

I did make a phone call to the Boston National Weather office trying to confirm Lowell, MA’s snow totals. The person I talked to couldn’t confirm the totals and the person that I really need to speak to there won’t be in until Saturday

I’m sure she will be able to clear things up.. From what they are showing right now would move Lowell into 1st place which is great unless of course you are from Worcester. I just don’t want to jump the snowbank on this until I can confirm it. I also sent a tweet to the Boston NWS last night asking about the new totals for Lowel and their reply was :

From NWS Boston – “I can tell you they did not receive that much snow last night. It may have been a typo, but I can not confirm.”.

For Lowell and a handful of other cities I have to get snow stats from the NWS site using the Now Data on the site. I won’t get into that but it’s different than the way I get most of the city snow stats.

Bruce, one of the member in our FB snow group pretty much summed it up – Bruce saaid –

“So, the dilemma is…did they correct an old typo, make a new typo, or update flawed previous data? And Patrick DeCoursey, you’re left trying to figure out how you should figure it out……does that sum it up?”.

Bruce is pretty much dead on and hopefully come Saturday everything will be all back to normal. for how long, Hey, I’m on third and I don’t know In the mean time keep in mind that everything is UNOFFICIAL right now as far as whether Worcester or Lowell, MA is leading.

Worcester Leads National Big City Snow Contest

OK, As of this mornings update by the National Weather Service, Worcester managed to out snow Lowell and are currently the snowiest Big city (pop of 100,000)in the United States. The snow contest was tied for a couple of days with both Lowell, MA and Worcester, MA sharing the top of the snow mountain.

Lowell moved down just one spot and is currently in second place and not to far away from the leader. Less than 4 inches separate Lowell and Worcester but watch out, here comes the Favorite Syracuse rounding the last turn in the race. I think it will be really interesting when we get down to the home stretch looking at how close several of the cities are to each other right now

Syracuse has managed to slip past Erie, PA, Boston, MA and Buffalo, NY this weekend moving into the number 3 spot. Syracuse started out really slow this season but has finally gotten their snow machine working, Lake Ontario so I think they will be playing in the snow as long as the cold weather sticks around. Of course with only a couple of tenths of an inch of snow separating them from Buffalo, things could change by the time the afternoon update comes out. Stay Tuned

OK, I am still surprised that we still have a tie between Lowell and Worcester after two days now. I think that may change buy the end of the day with a smaller storm moving into several of the cities in the snow contest as I type.

Syracuse is taking advantage the most so far as the Massachusetts cities take a little break from the snow. Syracuse managed to move into the Top 5 snowiest cities again and they may not be done just yet. Buffalo, NY has also been able to melt away some of the snow lead that Both Worcester and Lowell had over them.

It’s going to be interesting to see if the two leaders can hold on to the top spot on the snow mountain by the time this recent storm passes by. I’m starting to think that we may have a new leader come the end of this weekend. I think the Biggest question is which city will it be?

The Golden Snow Globe contest is about as close as it can get for this time in the season with only 6 inches of snow separating the Top 5 cities which are Lowell, Worcester, Buffalo, Boston and Syracuse in that order. Erie is right in the think of things too and less than 10 inches away from the top. We all know how bad last seasons snow champions want it this season and I’m sure they will do their best to hold onto the title of snowiest Big city in the United States.

From what I have heard so far from the members in our Facebook group that it is snowing right now in Buffalo, Erie and Rochester. Don’t take too big of a break Mass, it may cost you having one of your cities in the Top 3 Stay tuned for a later day update when the NWS puts out the next update.
