snowiest us cities

All posts tagged snowiest us cities

According to an article at MSN – The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club made their decree Thursday morning in central Pennsylvania: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and there’ll be six more weeks of winter. The announcement was met with boos from the enormous crowd gathered in Punxsutawney.

My question is what winter? Never mind winter but this whole snow season has been a bust so far. Records of warmer than normal temperatures are being set all over the country most likely. As for snow, what snow? To think people let out gasps and whines when they heard the news seems to go against the way the weather has been so far. I think it should have been whines and gasps if he didn’t see his shadow. That could have ended a good thing, the weather pattern that the US has had so far this winter. For those that don’t like the snow at least.

Phil

This by far has been the most boring updates I’ve done since keeping the stats the last couple of seasons.  A few jumps in the slopes here and there but no big snow for any of the cities.  I will agree with the rodent though.  I think within the next 7 – 10 days that jet stream that has been hanging to the north of the US will start dropping and when it does I think it may stick around for a bit.  Hopefully at least through March.  Keep an eye on the Colorado cities as they should be picking up some snow in some of the cities.  If it pans out that they get some decent snow I’ll update them again to see how they gain on Anchorage.

Have a Great Weekend All ;)

Just did a full update on the snow totals and Anchorage, AK just isn’t looking back to see if anyone is gaining on them. They’ve added around a couple more feet to their snow totals and have almost double the snow as 2nd place Lakewood, Co. Watching the weather channel and some other stations plus getting some comments from people who live in Alaska some of the towns/cities like Cordova, Alaska have received around 18 foot of snow so far this season. No doubt it will be hard to catch Anchorage but there is still plenty of time left in the 2011-2012 season. The only problem is it has to actually stop snowing there for any of our cities to catch up. WTG Anchorage :)

Here is some information on Anchorage and Ak that Anne from Alaska posted in a comment.  Thanks Anne :)

I am here in Anchorage and as of yesterday we broke all previous records for the amount of snow to date. We have had 81 inches as of yesterday and it is still snowing today. 81 inches is about twice what we normally have to date. In 94-95 we got 77 inches by January 9 and ended up with 120 for the winter. That year was beaten by 1954-5 which got 132.8 inches for the year and only 75 inches by January 9th. I was here in 94-5 and I recall that everyone started worrying about roofs collapsing under the snow. It happened in several places in town including the church down the street from me.
The small towns of Cordova and Valdez are also getting hit with more snow than usual:

The Colorado cities are starting to fall a littl bit but Lakewood, Co still has a nice snow pile seperating them for the 2nd spot on the snow mountain. With this last storm that came across the Great Lakes Erie, Pa was able to catch some of the white fluffy stuff along with several other cities in the northeast.

Syracuse, the snow champ for the last couple of years also managed to sled into the top 10 for the first time this season. They still have a long ways to go though if they want to defend their title of snowiest city in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more. I don’t think I would bet against them just yet as it looks like the cold air may be around for awhile this time. Buffalo, Erie, Rochester and some of the other lake effect snow cities have a decent chance at a big comeback for the fact that the Great Lakes haven’t frozen over yet this season. Last I heard was that Lake Erie was around 40 degrees which means that anytime some colder air comes across the lakes there is a good shot of seeing some lake effect snow pile up. It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks play out.

Hey, Have a Super Weekend All ;)

First off congrats to Green Bay and Pittsburgh on making it to the Super Bowl! That’s twice in a week that Pitt busted my bubble. Once beating my boys the Syracuse Orange and the second time beating my favorite football team the NY Jets :(

As far as the snow contest goes Syracuse has managed to hold onto the lead so far with a little bit of snow in the forecast for this week. Hopefully the storm to the south will move inland a little but as of today it’s not looking like it will. Things could change though ;) Here in Syracuse it was something like 13 below zero this morning and places to the north and around Syracuse were a lot colder than that. Rochester, NY is still knocking on South Bend, Indiana’s door but just can’t seem to slip ahead of them.

There was some slipping around in the top 10 but only one city dropped out and that was Erie, Pa. They got bumped out by Worcester, Mass has been moving up the snow mountain along with Boston pretty good the last few updates. Just 3 updates ago they were in 32nd place and now they are #10. I dropped several cities from the All Snowiest city section that really haven’t been doing much and still have to add a few. I figure I can always add them back if some storms start up. I did look up a few of the cities and if you want to suggest any to add to the contest remember it’s cities with a population of 100,000 or more. Dropped from the list are below.

Have a Great Week All!!!

We have three new cities in the top 10 for the first time this season. Boston, Mass, Erie, Pa and Hartford, Connecticut picked up quite a bit of snow since the last update at the Golden Snow Globe website. I knew Erie would make a move sooner or later and they have had it pretty easy up until the last week. Boston and Hartford are a little bit of a surprise but with the storms coming up the northeast coast they should keep cashing in on the white gold.

More of a surprise to me is that Boston is ahead of Worcester, Mass which you don’t see too often. Syracuse, still the snowiest city to beat most likely hit the 100 inch mark as I was updating the stats. A nice blast of lake effect snow dropped a quick couple of inches as I was updating and it hasn’t stopped yet. There are still several cities just a couple of good snow storms away from Syracuse so don’t think it’s a runaway for Syracuse. If South Bend can tap into another LES event like a couple of weeks ago they are right there with Da’Cuse. A couple more Nor’easters and several cities will be in the running ;)

According to the weather channel all of the US states received measurable snow with the exception of Florida. I don’t know if that is a first or not. I know it explains why this update took a little longer than normal with most of the cities listed here receiving some snow. That said, I will be dropping a few cities and adding a few. I know some of the cities in the southeast have picked up some snow and if you have a city in mind that you want listed that has received at least 10 inches give or take let me know. Remember though that the population has to be 100,000 or more. Hey,

Have a Great Week All :)

It’s snowing or at least was in South Bend, Indiana and they moved up the snow mountain big time. Cory dropped a post about the snow and sure enough they are closing in on Syracuse, New York. Hopefully it is still snowing there and they will close the snowflake gap even more. Just light snow in the Syracuse area right now but they are under an advisory which could keep things interesting.

Rochester and the rest of the pack dropped down the snow hill a spot with the record snow that South Bend picked up. They set a date record yesterday with 26 inches of the fresh white stuff blowing away the old record set in 1978 with 7.9 inches of snow. Myself, being from Syracuse, I’m loving the fact that the snow contest is finally getting close. WTG South Bend and there is still a ton of time left for some of the other cities to make a move……

Just a storm or two and hopefully there will be several other cities closing in. Have a Great Week All :)

The snow stats have been updated as of April 30th! Read below about calling it a wrap!

I’m still trying to make sure we call this contest right and have had a couple of conversations with some people from Noaa at a couple different weather stations.  From what I gathered is that if the city isn’t coming up with snow stats on NOAA the chances are there isn’t a weather station for that city and whatever comes in is probably from snow spotters.  I’ve said it sever time how much I respect what snow spotters do and the time they put into it but we are going to go with cities that have NOAA weather stations.

I talked with Chad Gimmestad from the Colorado NOAA station and got some really good input from him.  Thanks Chad for taking the time :)   I’ve come up with a date that should be safe enough to call the contest or hopefully safe enough to anyways.  We wanted to go with May 1st which is when we call the smaller snow contest at goldensnoball.com but seeing how the national snow contest involves many more cities we have decided to extend it just a little longer.  Colorado and a couple of other states are pretty much the last to receive snowfall so we decided to base it on that.  Snow is in the forecast for some of the Colorado cities depending on the temps for the next day or two and it could turn out to be a significant snow event.  With that said, the date is picked and it is soon so stay tuned is all I can say while I keep working the phones to make sure we get it right.  Of course there is always a chance we don’t and look like the normal fools we really are trying to have a fun contest.

Cheers and Have a great week all.

The title pretty much says it all. I just did a top 10 update and only one change in the lineup. I don’t see Syracuse adding any new snow in the near future so the title is up for the taking if you can pile on some new snow.

As for my new found friends in Flagstaff, AZ, I think we have enough posts in the comments section including one from my darling Daughter who figured she would just keep it going and going even though she lives in Oswego, NY :) Most will be just overlooked for the fact that the contest is 100,000 population or more. If I have the time I will try and give some of th smaller cities that got decent snow this season recognition come the end of the season ;) I’ll try and get a full update in sometime this week.

Have a Super Week All!

Lakewood and Fort Collins are on the move with the latest storm to hit Colorado. They both climbed several spots on the snow mountain. The weather in Syracuse has been pretty decent so they better start getting a little nervous about winning the first national snow contest for a city with a population of 100,000 or more.

It’s still just a matter of a storm or two for just about any of the top 10 Golden Snow Globe cities to move to the top. The North East has had some unusually warm weather with perhaps some snow in the forecast for early next week but as of now it doesn’t look like much. I’m still trying to find some snow stats for a few of the Colorado cities and will be contacting NOAA to see if they have them. Come the end of this seasons contest I will also talk with the National Weather Service to make sure we have the right city as the winner. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, this season is kind of a test run to get all the bugs out and I have several plans to make the contest more fun and interesting for the future seasons. Suggestions are always welcome.

Have a Great Week All and GO CUSE!!!! NCAA that is ;)

I had some personal stuff going on and I’m sorry about the lack of updates all. They should be more regular from here on through the rest of the snow season. I really thought I did an update on the top ten snowy cities after the last storm but when I checked today turns out I didn’t :(

All of the top 10 stayed but there were some changes in the lineup. Erie, pa is hanging tough and Rochester jumped a couple of spots on the snow mountain. March has been know to have some decent storms and this contest is far from over so Syracuse better not start counting their snowballs yet ;)

That said I think it is time to cut some of the cities out of the updates on the all of the US cities page. I was thinking maybe knocking it down to about 25 – 30 cities. Any thoughts on that???

Hey, have a super day all!
