snowiest us cities

All posts tagged snowiest us cities

There are two things that have scared me since day one of starting up the National snow contest. One, am I missing a big city that gets a ton of snow and two, am I calling the contest too soon?

The reason I worry about the second, when to wrap up the snow contest is because with my luck one of the cities will get some fluke snow storm in May or June. If the snow contest isn’t close I don’t worry so much but when it is close I tend to stress a little over it. The main reason is because the chances are good that some of the news media will be reporting it and I can see me calling the winner, the news reporting it and then another city goes ahead a week later:(

OK, so when does the contest get called? I’m hoping sometime at the beginning of May depending on what the long term forecast looks like. I think the longest we have gone is May 15th and the reason was because the Colorado cities were making a last minute charge up the snow mountain. This season they are way toward the bottom of the mountain so I don’t see that happening this season. Right now for this time in the season Erie, PA is looking pretty good with their lead of 5.5 inches over the next best and last seasons snow champion Syracuse. I don’t believe any of the cities on top of the snow mountain average that much snow for May so the beginning of May is looking good right now.

Those of you that follow the snow contest on Twitter will be one of the first to know when I call it so if you don’t follow you may want to. Our local paper in Syracuse and Erie, PA Life on Facebook will also be the first to know. Both have been awesome to the snow contest and it’s appreciated. Let’s just hope I don’t blow it :( Erie has held the lead most of the season and I will feel bad if Syracuse goes ahead at the last minute. I’ll fell bad but I’ll get over it. Hey, I’m from Syracuse ;) Good Luck to Both and let’s not forget Buffalo, NY!

The reason I worry about the first is because I don’t list all of the big cities that get snow for the fact that it would take too long to get updates in. I know there are some cities in probably in the Carolina’s that have gotten snow and others around the country but during a normal season it will never be enough to compete with the big snow makers. This season was anything but a normal snow season with many cities breaking all time records. Cities like Billings, Montana who had the most snow ever since records have been kept and there are several others that have had the same kind of season. Seasons like this get me a little nervous ;)

Important – I have been spending hours upon hours dealing with spam comments to the website. This is something I deal with every day of the year including all through summer. I just added a plugin that should hopefully help but I am a little worried that some legitimate comments from those of you that post may be blocked also. If that happens please let me know by contacting me through the contact page so I can make some adjustments. Hopefully you won’t have any problems and that this saves me hours of browsing through all of the spam that I get here.

A BIG Thanks to Carol G. for her donation that we received. Last month I was overwhelmed by the support the site received from a lot of you. Last month alone was more than the site has received in total since we started it a few years back. It’s nice to see the appreciation carrying over into this month and Thank You again to all of you and Thanks again Carol, I truly appreciate it :)

Have a Great Day Everyone :)

Updated 3/30 6 PM - Looks like all of the totals are in from this last blast of snow. The snowfall totals from the storm below were updated from earlier.

So here is the lowdown on the top 3 cities right now. Erie leads Syracuse by 5.5 inches and leads Buffalo by 8.4 inches. Still a 3 way race ;)

Syracuse’s lead over Buffalo, NY has been melted down to just 2.9 inches now. Man is it close and stay tuned!
—————————————-

3/30 3 PM - Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY and Rochester, NY all got some snow and a decent amount of it for this time in the season. So far nothing is being reported for 2nd place Syracuse. I know, there is still more snow to add to the snow totals and I’ll get a top 10 update in later on when The National Weather Service comes out with the next update. Here is what they are reporting total from this last blast of snowfall.

Erie, PA – 4.0 inches
Buffalo, NY – 5.6 inches
Rochester, NY – 8.6 inches
Cleveland – 5 inches (Broke into top 10)
Syracuse, NY – Notta, Null, Zip, Zero, 0.00 – They must have forgotten to measure the snow before the airplanes took off :(

A couple of things stand out from this last blast other than Erie adding to the lead that is. Buffalo is definitely in striking distance now of taking over 2nd place and perhaps even storming to the top to take the grand prize. Oh yeah, the grand prize of a virtual trophy or something plus a virtual pat on the back for a job well done of course ;)

Rochester is closing in on 4th place and should only be a few inches away from Grand Rapids, MI when the next update comes out from what I have heard and read. Even if Rochester doesn’t take over the 4th place spot they gave themselves a pretty good lead over Billings, Montana now and look pretty secure at finishing in the top 5 this season. Maybe Billings has something to say about that though.

I’m loving how this contest is playing out this season and it’s going to be a little bit sad when Syracuse pulls out the Lake Effect Dance like last year and goes snows to the top like last season. I will sincerely feel bad for Erie and the friends I have made from there the last couple of seasons ;) Stay Tuned!!!

Have a Great Day All :)

First Off – A big Thanks to Jack Y. for your recent generous donation to the site. As always I cannot say enough how much I appreciate it and how they do offset the costs of the site and time spent on it. I’ve received many donations this month that have helped out and it’s nice to know that the site and hours that go into it is appreciated. Thanks again Jack and to the rest of you :)

3/28 Erie Sets up The Catapult and Fires Away - It was Erie, Pa’s turn to launch some snowballs in the direction of Syracuse this time and Dave Belmondo was more than happy to step up to the snow mountain and fire away :) If you read below you will see that Andrew Donovan from Syracuse’s channel 9, WSYR was the first to throw a snowball at David Belmondo and the city of Erie. Erie who is in first place right now with some more snow in their forecast wasn’t going to just sit by and take the pounding from second place Syracuse, NY. Below are both video’s of some fun back and forth going on between Erie and Syracuse. Ut Oh, Erie has even gone a little further than Da’Cuse looking for a little help from Bishop Persico, lol. I’m loving it and Let the snowballs fly ;)

3/27 Syracuse Launches the First Attack – The snow race got a little bit closer this last update and once again Erie can hear footsteps coming up the snow mountain. Syracuse has closed the lead to just a little over an inch now and no doubt time is running out for all of the cities. Erie is still the King of the snow mountain as they have been most of the season.

I’m liking that some of the local news stations are starting to throw snowballs at each other and Syracuse started it yesterday with Channel 9 in Syracuse doing a little bit of trash talking with David Belmondo from WJET in Erie, PA. All in fun of course and that’s what the snow contest is about. Here is a clip of that and lets wait and see if David Belmondo has a few snowballs up his sleeve to toss back at Syracuse. Kind of seems like I am trying to instigate a good snowball fight doesn’t it ;) Of Course I AM!!!

I think I heard something about part 2 on Channel 9 news in Syracuse with Erie’s respond tonight. Stay tuned because I’m reading about more snow in the air come the end of the weekend. Have a Great Weekend Everyone :)

Updated 3/26 2 PM - I think if Syracuse ever goes ahead of Erie again I am going to get Mother Nature some antibiotics to take care of that sneeze once and for all :)

Erie, PA has jumped back into the snow lead as of yesterdays snow stats from NOAA and the crown is still warm from the last time they were the King of The Mountain. Right now Erie has a 2 inch lead on last seasons snow champ, Syracuse, NY. It’s starting to feel like I am watching a tennis match with all this back and forth going on right now rather than a snowball fight. Will that 2 inches be enough to hold off Syracuse come the next update a little later on?

Syracuse received some snow but most of it was after midnight which isn’t being reported yet. Erie may also have some more snow to add to their totals so it should be interesting come the next update.

Erie also received enough snow to make this their 5th snowiest season on record. They now have 133.1 inches on the season passing the 1993 – 1994 snow season which had 131.3 inches. WTG Erie and Congrats ;) Stay Tuned!

Updated 3/24 - I said just a week or so ago that the snow race was so close that all it would take is for Mother Nature to sneeze over Syracuse for them to take the lead. Ummm, God Bless You Mother Nature ;) Syracuse has taken the lead away from Erie, PA and is now sitting alone on top of the snow mountain. Don’t worry though Erie, maybe Mother Nature has a cold and all it will take is another sneeze for you to be back on the top of the snow mountain.

This is the first time since around the middle of December that Erie hasn’t been the Snow King. Time is running out but cold air is still in the forecast for at least a few more days if not more. Only 2 tenths of an inch separate Syracuse and Erie from the top spot now. No doubt this will be/is one of the closest contests we have had so far. WTG Syracuse ;)

Congrats to Billings, Montana on setting the record for the snowiest season ever on record. Billings has had 99.1 inches of snow fall so far this season breaking the old record set back in the 1996-1997 season of 98.7 inches. WTG Billings and that 100 inch mark is right around the corner or should you go for a HOT 101.9 for the season ;) Thanks for the heads up McLovin from HOT 101.9 in Billings, Montana. Maybe they should give away a prize if the season ends at 101.9 inches. Come on, put up Hot 101.9 :P

Stay Tuned and Have a Great Night :)

A big Thanks to Shanna K. for your donation to the site. I really do appreciate it and I will be getting back to you shortly to help you out with what you are looking for. Thank You Shanna :)

Updated 3/21 5:30 PM - It looks like we have a New King of The Snow Mountain for the first time in more than 3 months. WAIT, We actually have 2 Kings of the snow mountain right now ;) Syracuse, last seasons comeback city has now tied Erie and is sharing the top spot as of the last update from the National Weather Service. What a run for Erie, PA on the top of the mountain and they still don’t want to move. WTG Erie! It’s not even close to being over yet and is still up for grabs. Go Syracuse, Go Erie :)
———————————————————

Can Erie hold on that long though is the question? Syracuse has melted away most of Erie, PA’s lead now. Erie leads Syracuse, NY by just a few snowflakes. As of the last update the lead was cut to just 0.3 tenths of an inch. Maybe a better question is can Erie hold on when the next update comes out. It’s been snowing off and on in the Syracuse area and if it hasn’t been snowing in Erie there is a good possibility that we may have a lead change for the first time in a long time. IS IT SNOWING IN ERIE?

Looking back at my snow stats it looks like Erie, PA has held on to the lead since at least December 15th, 2013 which is most likely the longest any city has held the lead since I started The Golden Snow Globe. The last city to hold it before Erie was Billings, Montana who was the King of the snow mountain on December 11th, 2013. No doubt it will be interesting come the next update.

Below are some good stats going up until March 13th, when Dave sent them to me as to how the season has played out so far between Erie, PA and Syracuse, NY.  According to Dave and the stats below Erie, PA had their biggest lead over Syracuse on January 17th with 28.7 inches.  Thanks to Dave Meyer for putting the stats together, Thanks Dave :)

Have a Great Day Everyone :)

First off as always I want to thanks some people for their donations to the site. I checked my PayPal account today to send my son some money and was surprised to see that 3 people made donations to the last two days. It really made my day and makes the work that goes into the site feel like it’s appreciated :) A Big Thanks to Janet S., Nancy S., and Paul B. I think that is just about how many people who have donated to the site this entire season. Thanks again to all 3 of you, they really do help and I truly appreciate the thought and you taking the time :)
——————————————————–
It seems like it is still snowing in most of the Golden Snow Globe cities. Erie added to their totals again and have now had their 8th snowiest season on record and most likely they will continue to move up on that list. Syracuse added enough snow to at least keep pace with what Erie is getting which is a good thing for Syracuse, NY. Grand Rapids did take second place away for a little while earlier when I was peaking at the snow stats but Syracuse wasn’t reporting their overnight snow at the time and Grand Rapids was. Some of the National Weather Service stations report at different times.

Either way both Grand Rapids and Buffalo are hanging close to Syracuse right now for the second place spot on the snow Mountain. Now one of the cities need to put some pressure on Erie, PA ;) Billings, Montana seems to have a decent enough lead over the cities below them to be sitting in the fifth place spot comfortably right now. Adam, who is from Billings posted a comment that they have received 28 inches in the last 7 days. Just think about it, in the last 7 days Billings had had almost what they should have for the whole season up until today which is 35 inches. No doubt some records are being set there.

I was listening to one of our local news stations here in Syracuse tonight, Channel 3, which is CNYCentral and meteorologist Mike Brookins had a pretty good line about how this winter has been for most places this season. He said something like “Don’t you kind of feel like we are all inside a snow globe and someone just keeps on shaking it”? I loved it and it does sum up this snow season doesn’t it?

Have a Super Week Everyone ;)

Watch out all because here comes last seasons runner-up Worcester, Massachusetts charging up the snow mountain. For those of you that may not have been around the Golden Snow Globe site last season it was a super close snow race right to the very end. Unfortunately the end never came until something like May 31st because all of the Colorado cities decided to make a late charge.

If I remember correctly and trust me my memory is shot, last season Worcester held a pretty good lead come March and the battle at that time was between Erie and Syracuse fighting for second place. Syracuse looked to be out of the contest at one point but managed to get some fluke lake effect snowfall, about 10.5 inches in April which even for Syracuse is pretty much unheard of. Here was the headline on April 2nd of last season. BREAKING NEWS – Syracuse Plows Past Worcester and Erie :) Let’s hope we hear that again this season.

OK, enough rambling and the point I am trying to make, I think, is don’t count Worcester out of this seasons contest. They are battle tested and proven and the question is do they have enough snowballs left to win the snowball fight this season? Keep in mind also that Worcester, Massachusetts is one of those cities that know how to pick up any snow that is hanging around them and they almost always get in on the coastal storms.

Right now they are a ways behind the current King of the snow mountain Erie but they are climbing pretty fast. I don’t even think they were in the top 20 at the beginning of this month but have moved up to #7. So far for February and it’s not over yet Worcester has piled up 38.2 inches of new snowfall. Their total right now for the season is 77.6 inches putting them 32.9 inches over their normal total to date which on average is should only be 44.7 inches. They are also 10 inches over last seasons total snowfall for this time in the season which was 67.5 inches of snow. Yup, I would say that those of us ahead of Worcester, Mass should be watching our backs right now for their sneak attack ;)

Have an Awesome Night All ;)

I don’t think it’s a matter of WILL but more like WHEN will Erie pass the 10th snowiest season and how far down the list will they go? Erie, Pennsylvania is closing in on it’s 10th snowiest season on record and there is still a lot of time left in the season, like it or not. Erie, Pa went over the 110 inch mark the other day and with a snow storm closing in on them tonight there is a slight chance they may break their record for the 10th snowiest season come the end of tomorrow. Reading around it looks like as of now Erie is under an advisory and the forecast is calling for 3-5 inches between today and tomorrow. Erie needs to pick up just another 8 inches of new snow to move into the number 10 spot on the list.

Right now Erie, Pa is at 110.8 inches on the season and looking at their 10 top snowiest seasons (Thanks Gary for sharing) Erie needs to get to 118.8 inches to pass the old record of 118.7 inches which was set back in the 2007-2008 snow season. With so much time left in the snow season and with it looking like the cold will be around for awhile other than a short break in a few days Erie has a decent chance in my opinion of at least climbing into their top 5 snowiest seasons on record and who knows, maybe even the snowiest season ever on record. That one is down the road a bit though.

Erie, Pennsylvania’s snowiest season according to the National Weather Service (NOAA) is 149.1 which happened in the 2000-2001 season. Erie is still away from breaking that record but with the way the storms have been lining up this season ya never know. Stay Tuned and below are the top 10 snowiest seasons courtesy of Gary and the National Weather Service. For what it’s worth, Syracuse got stuck at 99.9 inches as of today. Couldn’t even squeeze out just another tenth of snow :)

Top 10 Snowiest Seasons

1. 149.1 – 2000-01
2. 145.8 – 2008-09
3. 143.0 – 2002-03
4. 142.8 – 1977-78
5. 131.3 – 1993-94
6. 129.2 – 1995-96
7. 124.9 – 1985-86
8. 122.6 – 2004-05
9. 120.0 – 1970-71
10. 118.7 – 2007-08

I don’t know what it is but I just have a feeling that Syracuse is going to finally join in the snowball fight between Erie, Pa, Buffalo, NY and Grand Rapids, Michigan. Call it a hunch, a gut feeling or maybe it’s because the snow dance was done a week or so ago and I have enough confidence in it :) Whatever it is I think it’s time for the big 3 on top of the mountain to maybe start restocking your snowball supplies because Da’Cuse is on the loose ;)

I did get a full update in earlier today and should hopefully get at least another top 10 update posted sometime tomorrow. One of our great writers here in the Syracuse area Sean Kirst who writes for the Post Standard newspaper in Syracuse, NY and also for Syracuse.com just put out an article about the National snow contest. Worth reading and check it out at www.syracuse.com/kirst/index.ssf/2014/02/national_snowfall_contest_syra.html  Sean who loves our smaller New York snow contest at goldensnowball.com  was a big part of why that contest got resurrected.

Stay Tuned and Have an Awesome Week All :)

Syracuse, New York continues to slide down the snow mountain dropping another spot this update. Erie, PA has to be loving it considering the big comeback that Syracuse made at the very end of the season to go ahead of both Erie and Worcester, Massachusetts. Erie also gained some snow on the rest of us since the last update :(

Grand Rapids, Michigan slipped past Syracuse for the number 3 slot on the mountain knocking Da’Cuse down to number 4. All of the top 10 snowiest cities managed to stay in the top 10 this round. That could change come tomorrow with it snowing today in some of the Golden Snow Globe cities including here in the Syracuse area.

Is it snowing in your city today? How about in Erie, Buffalo, Rochester or any of the other cities? Give us an update in this post if you have a minute to let us know what’s happening in your neck of the woods ;) Taking a rough guess I’m thinking about 4 – 5 inches so far here in the Syracuse area with light snow still falling. Sure beats the cloudy, gloomy, rainy days we have been having.

Enough for now and it’s almost time for what should be a good college basketball game between Pitt and Syracuse. Good Luck Pitt but Let’s Go Orange ;)
