Grand Rapids, Michigan Hits 2 Feet of Snow

OK, Grand Rapids, Michigan is the first city to pile up 2 feet of snowfall this season. They added another 1.2 inches to their snow lead putting Grand Rapids snow totals at 24.6 inches for the 2014-2015 snow season. Erie, Pa and South Bend, Indiana are hanging right with them and it’s still a close snow race. Buffalo is on the move breaking into the top 5 for the first time this season.

I was looking at some of the snow totals around the Buffalo area and was thinking that if this epic lake effect snow hit the Buffalo airport we probably could have called it a wrap for the season. Some of the cities south of Buffalo and just several miles away are reporting 60 + inches of snowfall. I think a 4 foot lead would be pretty hard to catch even for the normal top snowiest big cities in the country. That said it is a pretty serious situation going on in the are and here is what I posted on the New York snow contest site, the Golden Snowball last night. I should be able to get another update in a little later. Have a great day ;)

OK, I normally try to keep the snow site fun after all that’s what it’s all about. Having fun and maybe helping the winter season pass by a little faster. That said what’s going on in the surrounding Buffalo area is I think one of the most serious situations I have seen. You won’t hear me say this too often but I do hope the snow stops soon in the Buffalo area.

From Angelo – “Just wanted to update you guys, official snow fall in my town of Lancaster over last 2 days is 73 inches, south buffalo has about 65 on the ground. Airport is on the border of the heavy snow line but should receive another foot tonight and tomorrow. Lancaster is looking at another 20 plus inches in the same time frame. Maybe we can reach that magic number of 100 inches! In all seriousness this storm has claimed 7 lives so far and has collapsed a number of roofs and with the additional snow and 50 degree temps we will be seeing Sunday through Tuesday I’m sure we will be seeing even more collapses and major flooding. Wish us luck!”

Me – “Hey Angelo, Wow is still the only word that comes to mind. It’s cool seeing the numbers, pictures and videos but then again I wish I wasn’t seeing them because I know how serious the situation is there and all around there. Definitely Good Luck to all of you effected and I hope there are no more deaths from this unbelievable snowfall. My thought s and Yes prayers are with all of you. I’m not looking forward to what we will most likely be reading once the temps start going up. Stay Safe,”

Updated 11/19 7 PM – Grand Rapids, Michigan continues to hold onto the snow race lead but not by much. Erie, Pa has been quiet and after seeing all of the videos and pictures of the towns around Buffalo, NY I’m sure they probably don’t have a problem with that lake effect snow missing them so far.

Buffalo is finally on the move and just missed making it into the top 5 snowiest cities. The cities from Minnesota, Indiana, Colorado and Ohio seem to be taking over the top 25 the last few updates. Snow is still in the forecast for several of the cities so it should stay interesting for another day or two ;)

Also I wanted to let those of you know that have sent pictures and emails that I am getting them but I have been sick and I will get to posting them. I also wanted to get an update in this morning but I have been fighting a cold the last 2 weeks and it hit me hard enough today to finally go to the doctors. Probably a good thing I gave in because it ended up turning into pneumonia which I seem to get once a year right around this time.

Right now I am visiting North Carolina so it took awhile to find a doctor. Yup, you know arm and sunny North Carolina where I think the temperature ended up going down to 17 degrees last night :( I was reading that all 50 states in the US went below freezing last night. Hard to believe it’s only November isn’t it. Stay Tuned and have a Great Night All :)

Updated 11/18 7 PM - Just as I was thinking, we do have a new leader in the Golden Snow Globe national snow contest. The new leader isn’t the city that I expected to go on top though. Congrats to Grand Rapids, Michigan who slipped past Erie, Pa to take the top slot on the snow mountain :)

I think most of us were keeping an eye on Buffalo, New York today thinking that they would be the new leader but for some reason they are only reporting a couple of inches so far for today. No doubt they got robbed with the lake effect snow that has been relentlessly pounding some of the smaller cities just a couple of miles away from the airport where their measurements are taking. This is one of the few times I actually feel bad for Buffalo.

I did notice earlier today as I was checking out a couple of radars that Grand Rapids had some snow falling. To be honest I was looking to see how South Bend was doing but the snow band kind of hung north of them earlier today when I noticed Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids, Michigan set 2 date records in a row, one yesterday and one today. Yesterday they had 4.4 inches of snow breaking the old date record of 2.9 inches set back in 1989. Today so far they are showing 7.3 inches of new snowfall which breaks the same record of 2.9 inches set back in 1989 also.

So far we have had 5 lead changes this season and with snow still in the forecast for the next couple of days I’m sure we will have couple more lead changes in the coming days. Stay Tuned for more updates and for those of you getting the 3-5 feet of snow, please stay safe.

Updated 11/18 5:15 PM – I am still waiting for all of the city snow stats to come out and will do an update when they do which should be any time now. I am looking at stats right now and I was surprised to see Buffalo’s new totals :( Pretty lame what is being reported at the airport but all around them got pounded pretty good and I think it’s suppose to continue. All about those lake effect snow bands either hitting or just missing. I know I am going to get some not so nice comments from some folks in Buffalo about where the airport is located either on this site or the NY snow contest site. Still could be a couple of cities that may challenge Erie though. The new stats should be posted by the national weather service anytime now plus I don’t think Buffalo is done with the snow yet…

Updated 1:00 PM - I was looking around at the snow stats and there wasn’t a whole lot going on so I am going to hold off on an update for now. The reason being that the latest update from NOAA doesn’t include the overnight snowfall so it would pretty much just be a waste of time.

I will do a full update when the next snow stats come out in a bit and no doubt they should be interesting. The Buffalo area has been getting hit pretty good. The question will be is the airport where they take the measurements at getting a lot of snow? If so I think Erie, Pa may want to be a little worried about hanging on to the almost 17 inch lead that you hold right now over Buffalo.

I know that the NY State Thruway is closed IN BOTH DIRECTIONS between Exit 46, Rochester, and Exit 59, Dunkirk has been closed for now so a lot of snow is falling. I’ve also heard from a couple of people from Erie who said that there wasn’t much going on there but that was early this morning. Any changes in Erie yet. I was also reading that some paces south of Buffalo may get up to 70 inches of snow. Even I have to admit that is just nuts :(

It’s a Three Way Race For King of The Snow Mountain

Updated 3/30 6 PM - Looks like all of the totals are in from this last blast of snow. The snowfall totals from the storm below were updated from earlier.

So here is the lowdown on the top 3 cities right now. Erie leads Syracuse by 5.5 inches and leads Buffalo by 8.4 inches. Still a 3 way race ;)

Syracuse’s lead over Buffalo, NY has been melted down to just 2.9 inches now. Man is it close and stay tuned!

3/30 3 PM - Erie, PA, Buffalo, NY and Rochester, NY all got some snow and a decent amount of it for this time in the season. So far nothing is being reported for 2nd place Syracuse. I know, there is still more snow to add to the snow totals and I’ll get a top 10 update in later on when The National Weather Service comes out with the next update. Here is what they are reporting total from this last blast of snowfall.

Erie, PA – 4.0 inches
Buffalo, NY – 5.6 inches
Rochester, NY – 8.6 inches
Cleveland – 5 inches (Broke into top 10)
Syracuse, NY – Notta, Null, Zip, Zero, 0.00 – They must have forgotten to measure the snow before the airplanes took off :(

A couple of things stand out from this last blast other than Erie adding to the lead that is. Buffalo is definitely in striking distance now of taking over 2nd place and perhaps even storming to the top to take the grand prize. Oh yeah, the grand prize of a virtual trophy or something plus a virtual pat on the back for a job well done of course ;)

Rochester is closing in on 4th place and should only be a few inches away from Grand Rapids, MI when the next update comes out from what I have heard and read. Even if Rochester doesn’t take over the 4th place spot they gave themselves a pretty good lead over Billings, Montana now and look pretty secure at finishing in the top 5 this season. Maybe Billings has something to say about that though.

I’m loving how this contest is playing out this season and it’s going to be a little bit sad when Syracuse pulls out the Lake Effect Dance like last year and goes snows to the top like last season. I will sincerely feel bad for Erie and the friends I have made from there the last couple of seasons ;) Stay Tuned!!!

Erie, PA Still the Snow King Lead Getting Smaller

Erie, PA continues to camp out on top of Golden Snow Globe Mountain and I’m guessing that they have been there so long they probably have a ski resort built by now :) Can Erie continue to hold on to the top spot for another month or two? No doubt all of the other top cities blew a good chance to catch up to them the last several days. Syracuse managed to melt away only 7 tenths of an inch off the lead. For the most part all of the cities have been taking a break from the snow including Grand Rapids, Buffalo and Billings who round off the top 5 snowiest big cities in the US. After a couple of days with the temps above freezing and two days in a row with the sun shining, at least Here in Syracuse, I’m thinking just give Syracuse 10 inches and let’s call it a wrap :)

Sorry about the lack of updates but I have really been letting my other work slide lately. I barely looked at my shopping websites in the last 6-8 weeks because of the snow and time spent on this site. Snow For A Lot Of Cities in the US

First off as always I want to thanks some people for their donations to the site. I checked my PayPal account today to send my son some money and was surprised to see that 3 people made donations to the last two days. It really made my day and makes the work that goes into the site feel like it’s appreciated :) A Big Thanks to Janet S., Nancy S., and Paul B. It seems like it is still snowing in most of the Golden Snow Globe cities. Erie added to their totals again and have now had their 8th snowiest season on record and most likely they will continue to move up on that list. Syracuse added enough snow to at least keep pace with what Erie is getting which is a good thing for Syracuse, NY. Grand Rapids did take second place away for a little while earlier when I was peaking at the snow stats but Syracuse wasn’t reporting their overnight snow at the time and Grand Rapids was. Some of the National Weather Service stations report at different times.

Either way both Grand Rapids and Buffalo are hanging close to Syracuse right now for the second place spot on the snow Mountain. Now one of the cities need to put some pressure on Erie, PA ;) Billings, Montana seems to have a decent enough lead over the cities below them to be sitting in the fifth place spot comfortably right now. Adam, who is from Billings posted a comment that they have received 28 inches in the last 7 days. Just think about it, in the last 7 days Billings had had almost what they should have for the whole season up until today which is 35 inches. No doubt some records are being set there.

I was listening to one of our local news stations here in Syracuse tonight, Channel 3, which is CNYCentral and meteorologist Mike Brookins had a pretty good line about how this winter has been for most places this season. He said something like “Don’t you kind of feel like we are all inside a snow globe and someone just keeps on shaking it”? I loved it and it does sum up this snow season doesn’t it?

Almost Every City Over Average Snow Totals

I think that those of us on top really better start paying attention to Billings, Montana. They added another 7.3 inches of new snowfall yesterday setting a date record that was 3.3 inches going back to 1979. I was also reading an article at the Billings Gazette website about how this is their 3rd snowiest season ever and they just blew away their snowiest February on record I believe. Why we need to worry is that the upcoming storm looks like it is going to miss most of the cities on top now staying more to the South. According to the article Billings will be grabbing some snow from the storm. This guy isn’t taking any chances and YES I did just do the last Snow Dance of the season so keep an eye on Syracuse, NY too :)

Secondly, HAPPY MARCH everyone :) For some reason after keeping snow stats for something like 12 years now on the New York snow site, the Golden Snowball March doesn’t excite me as much as it use too. April is a totally different story though. March is that month where you know Spring is just around the corner but it seems to never get here. April, other than last year where Syracuse picked up something like 11 inches of snow we can pretty much figure the snow season is over. Not too many cities get more than a couple of inches of snow in April where as March has been known to produce some pretty big snow storms including the blizzard of 1993. OK, OK, I know, enough already of me depressing you on the first day of March ;)

I just went down the list of snowiest big cities in the United States and even though I knew it’s been a snowy season I was surprised that almost every city is over their average snow totals for this time in the season. The thing is most of the cities aren’t just over their average snowfall but they are blowing the averages away. I think Philadelphia, PA really stands out. Philly has over 3 times the normal snowfall for this time in the season.

Billings, Montana it seems has had snow just about every time I do an update lately it seems. Billings just set a date record for snowfall yesterday picking up a fresh new 7.3 inches of the white fluffy stuff breaking the old record of 3.3 inches set in 1979. Billings is also a city that those on top may want to keep an eye on now. They just went over the 90 inch mark and are currently in 5th place. Billings normal average to date should be 34.5 inches, just one of many blowing away their average snow totals this season.

Our current King of the snow mountain Erie, Pennsylvania is almost 40 inches over their average snowfall right now. A ton of the cities in the contest have more than doubled the average snowfall they would normally have this time in the snow season. Syracuse, NY, Rochester, NY and Sioux Falls, SD are all right around where they should be right now but still a little over.

There are only a handful of cities that are below the amount of snow that they should have at this time. Salt Lake City, Utah, Spokane, Washington, Anchorage, Alaska and I’m guessing maybe Denver and a couple other cities from Colorado that don’t report what the average should be for this time in the snow season. Just think of all of the other cities that we don’t have listed. My guess is there has to be well over one hundred if not more that are way over their snow totals.

I’ve been trying to keep an eye on all of the cities that are having one of their top 10 snowiest season on record but I think there are too many probably to keep track of. I’ll try and get some info on that hopefully next week but if you read the comments section several people are posting where their city is at right now. To those of you in Erie, PA I have 4 words for you. GO FOR THE RECORD ;) Less than 30 inches away, why not have a historic snow season to brag about to the Grand Kids years from now…

Ok, I know my teacher pals that visit here are going to hit me with a ruler for personalizing the cities so many times in this post :(

Syracuse, NY and Grand Rapids, MI Tied for 2nd Snowiest Big City

The way Syracuse and Grand Rapids, Michigan have been going back and forth I think it is only fitting that they get in a tie for second place on the snow mountain. Makes me wonder how you have a snowball fight when you are right next to each other? Hopefully they are teaming up together and throwing some snowballs up the mountain at Erie, Pa to try and knock them off the top spot where they have been for awhile now ;)

Syracuse had a good shot last night at taking a big chunk of snow off the lead that Erie, Pennsylvania has right now but blew it. The same thing happened last night that has happened most of the season for Syracuse. Some nice lake effect snow was falling to the north and was expected to drop down into Syracuse but instead the band broke into smaller bands and I’m guessing only 3-5 inches of snow fell. It will be interesting to see what the National Weather Service has to report come the evening update. Chances are that if Grand Rapids didn’t get much overnight and today then Syracuse may be in 2nd place alone come later on.

Also interesting is the storm that is hitting some of us now and will be hitting the Northeast come Sunday and Monday. I thought it was looking good for Syracuse a day or two ago but it may be looking good for Erie. The last I looked it seemed like the heavier snow may stay to the south of Syracuse just a bit. I think that is advantage Erie, PA. The good thing for Syracuse and the rest of the cities trying to catch them is that these forecasts change by the hour so a little shift one way or the other could change things. Anyone from Erie, Buffalo or any other city that is suppose to get hit hearing anything on this snow storm? Stay tuned and if I’m around I’ll try to get another Top 25 snowy city update in later.

8 Cities Chopped From The Ice Block in Golden Snow Globe Contest

Updated 5:30 PM – A little bit of news to share. Syracuse has slipped past Grand Rapids to move into the second place spot on the snow mountain. Now less than a foot of snow separating Erie, Pa and Syracuse, NY… One other update 9:30 PM – Billings wasn’t reporting earlier so I just took a look and they have jumped all the way up to the number 5 spot :)

I figured it was about time to do some chopping in the National Snow Contest. If one of the cities dropped was yours, please don’t take it personal. I ended up just dropping the bottom 8 cities so we now have 50 cities left in the contest. I know I can probably drop a whole bunch more but we’ll keep it at 50 for now. Address all complaints to Mother Nature because she is the one responsible for your lack of snowfall this season ;) Cities that were chopped are;

Colorado Springs, Colorado
Kansas City, Missouri
Pueblo, Colorado
Independence, Missouri
Lincoln, Nebraska
Washington DC (National)
Omaha, Nebraska
Albuquerque, New Mexico

The national snow race this season is really starting to shape up. Right now there are 4 cities in a good battle for the top spot with only around 16 inches of snow separating the number 1 snowiest city which is Erie, PA from the number 4 city which is Buffalo, NY. The other two snowiest cities in the hunt for King of the Snow Mountain are Grand Rapids, MI and Syracuse, NY. I’m not counting any of the other cities below them out either. There is still a lot of time left in the snow season whether you/we like it or not. REMEMBER – The contest does NOT end the first day of Spring! I’ll have to repeat that several times because it seems every season one of the news sites post the winner the first day of spring and then a bunch of other follow them :( In reality the season goes from July 1st to the last day of June but we will call it a lot sooner than that or as soon as Syracuse takes the lead, Oh Stop, I’m Joking ;)

There are a couple good snowball fights going on right now. One is for 2nd place with Grand Rapids, Syracuse and Buffalo battling it out. Only around 4 inches separating Buffalo and Grand Rapids and only an inch of snow is between Syracuse and Grand Rapids. Chances are Syracuse received more than that during the overnight which hasn’t been reported yet so it could get interesting depending on what Buffalo, NY and Grand Rapids had fall overnight.

The other decent snowball fight going on and has been for awhile is the battle for the 5th place spot. That battle just got even crazier with Billings, Montana joining in. Billings has been cranking out the snow and picked up something like 14 inches of snow since the last update and also set a date record for one of the days. There are 5 cities within around 3 inches of each other for the fifth place spot on the mountain. Those 5 cities are Ann Arbor, Michigan, Worcester, Mass, Rochester, NY, Billings, Montana and Detroit, MI. Of those cities 2 – 3 of them should have a little over 30 inches right now during a normal snow season. Right now they are at around 80 inches. Another reason why I’m not counting them out just yet :) OK, enough for now and stay tuned.

Grand Rapids 6th Snowiest Season Ever

I just took a peek at the snow stats for Grand Rapids, Michigan and it looks like they are now at their 6th Best snow season since it’s been recorded by The National Weather Service. Right now I am showing 102.9 for the 2013 – 2014 season according to NOAA which breaks the record of 101.5 set back in the 1964 – 1965 season. Keep it going Grand Rapids. Grand Rapids, MI second snowiest season on record is right around the corner :)

Grand Rapids, Michigan Slides Past Syracuse and Buffalo, NY

OK, I was thinking that Syracuse, NY would have been the second Big city this season to hit 100 inches of snow being stuck at 99.9 inches. I even came close to writing something about it ahead of time to get a jump on it. Good thing I didn’t because Grand Rapids is the second city to hit the 100 inch mark :) Way to go Grand Rapids and now that they have over 100 inches they also slid from 4th place on the snow mountain to the number 2 spot.

Grand Rapids is also closing in a little on Erie, PA who has been the King of the snow mountain for quite awhile now. A little too long if you ask me but then again I’m from Syracuse so what do you expect ;) Seriously though, Erie has been tough this season and they are still adding to their total snowfall just about every update.

I also just got an email from Valeria pointing me to an article Here at MLive that shows that this is Grand Rapids 8th snowiest season on record. According to Andrew Krietz at Mlive.com Grand Rapids is only 6.1 inches away from having the second snowiest season ever and 31.2 inches way from their snowiest season ever. Definitely reachable I think with this much time left in the snow season. Good Luck ;)

Grand Rapids, MI not only hit 100 + inches of snow, passed Buffalo and Syracuse but they have closed in to the top spot by less than a foot now. They broke a date record yesterday by picking up 5.6 inches of the fresh white fluffy stuff beating the old record of 4.7 inches set in 1956. I’m thinking this is starting to turn into a 4 city snow race to the top but I think it is still too early to think that.

Right now Grand Rapids is about 41 inches over what their snow totals should be for this time in the season. They also already have a couple of feet of snow more than what their entire seasons totals are normally which is right around 75 inches with a lot of time left n this season. All I can say is Stay Tuned, it will be interesting right until the last snowflake falls ;)

Detroit — New 3.5 – Old 3.3 Inches – 2003
Grand Rapids, Michigan — New 5.6 – Old 4.7 inches – 1956
MILWAUKEE, WI — New 6.7 – Old 3.5 inches – 1901
Flint — New 4.5 – Old 2.6 inches – 1956
Ft Wayne — New 2.9 inches – Old 1.8 – 1924
Minneapolis, Minnesota — New 4.9 – Old 3.8 inches – 1972
Rochester, MN — New 3.6 – Old 2.0 inches – 1939
