I just did a top 25 update and South Bend, Indiana has pushed Erie, Pa down from the snow mountain. Hard to believe that when a city picks up over a foot of snow in a day that another is going to be right there behind them. Erie had the lead after yesterdays snow flakes were all counted up but South Bend was able to add more snow than Erie did today to take the lead for the first time this season.

Remember that last season we had to pull South Bend out because the airport stopped taking measurements for the National Weather Service at that weather station. Well all is good now and I personally love having a competitor like South Bend, Indiana back in the national snow contest. WTG South Bend and once again welcome back to the Golden Snow Globe contest ;)

One other thing to keep in mind is that there are many, many weather stations across the country and they DO NOT all report at the same time. Most are within a couple of hours of each other when they upload the snow stats though. This last Top 25 update there were a few stations that haven’t reported yet just to let you know. Chances are though that none of those cities received enough snow today to pass either South Bend or Erie, Pa.

I’ll take a peak later at a few of the cities if I get a chance and post some stats if they seem to matter. Have a Great night all…

First a Big Thanks to Marc L. for your generous donation to the site. They all help offset some of the costs and also help out with the time taken away from the other sites when working on this site. Thanks Marc and if I ever miss someone, please let me know :)

Updated 11/14 2:30 PM – I just did another update and I think I may have to dedicate the song to both Erie, Pa and South Bend, Indiana. South Bend also set a record yesterday with 12.5 inches of snowfall breaking the old record of 4.7 inches set back in 1974. WTG South Bend ;) Only 0.1 separating the 2 cities now. Stay Tuned!

I’ve been reading some comments on some of the Erie sites about the snow you received yesterday which was over a foot of snow to start the season. 12.6 inches of new snowfall. According to Robert who left a comment, that broke an old record of 12.5 inches. Thanks for the info Robert :)

Some loving it and then of course some not loving it so much. Anyways, this song came to mind for whatever reason. A nice little love song from Mother Nature to Erie, Pa. Yeah, I’m showing my age now ;)

First, as always, a Big Thanks to Sue G. for your donation to the site. They always help out a lot and are very much appreciated. Thanks Sue for taking the time :)

OK! I have to admit I was blind sided and slid into the ditch when I saw the snow totals for Erie, Pa. I figured they would be getting some snow but I wasn’t expecting anything like a foot of snowfall to start Erie, Pennsylvania’s snow season off. Remember they were only showing a trace of snow up until now. As of the last update from the National weather service they are reporting 11.8 inches of the fresh white gold on the ground and it sounds like Erie isn’t finished yet. Even though the National Weather Service isn’t showing it yet my guess is they probably set a date snowfall record. WTG Erie :)

There was a whole lot of sliding around this update and 3 cities sled past Anchorage, Alaska who held the lead up until today. Erie, Pa, South Bend, Indiana and Fort Collins, Colorado moved into the top 3 slots on the Golden Snow Globe snow mountain.

South Bend set a date record picking up 6.2 inches of snow breaking the old record of 4.7 set back in 1974. It’s good to have you back South Bend :)

As for those of us in Syracuse, New York we figure we will sit back until about February and then turn on our Lake Effect Machine for the big finish. Oh wait, that didn’t go too good last season did it? It looks like it will be another fun snow season and with last seasons snow champs starting with a big lead it should be a lot of fun trying to catch them. Good Luck to all of the cities.

As always, See Snow – Drive Slow unless of course your on a sled or the ski mountains :) Have a great night all!

Updated 11/12 -I’ve been waiting for some new snow stats to come in from the storm and they are starting to. We doubled the 9 cities that had measurable snowfall and now have 18 cities that are reporting snow. It looks like Minneapolis, Minnesota may be the winner of this round and I think they are going to have more snow to add to their totals by the end of the day. Minneapolis, Minnesota jumped into second place on the snow mountain and are only 0.4 inches away from moving to the top with Anchorage.

Billings, Montana who I thought would be the first to strike for the 2014-2015 snow season is on the mountain now reporting 2 inches of snowfall. They moved up to the 3rd slot on the snow mountain and remember they were pretty competitive last season. If anything changes come the next update from the National Weather Service I’ll try to get another update in later. Have an awesome day all ;)

I’ve been reading around and it looks like winter storm Astro is going to be a game changer when it come to the early start of the Golden Snow Globe contest. Anchorage, Alaska has been holding on to the snow lead for awhile this season. I think a good bet will be that that will be dropping down at least a few spots.

It’s looking good right now according to several weather sites including The National Weather Service which is where we get our official snow stats from. South Dakota, Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin and Michigan are looking good as of the last check. This storm most like will be hanging to the North the more it pushes to the East. Remember, I’m no expert and kind of just bluff my way through these posts so if your city is in the storm Astro warning and watch areas check with the pros like the National Weather Service or your local weather folks ;)

I was going to do a full update but ended up just doing a quick top 25 update because there was only one change in the top 25 snowiest cities which was Ann Arbor, Michigan which jumped a few spots up on the snow mountain. I will be doing updates the next couple of days as snow storm Astro hits all of the cities. Right now I’m reading that the cities that get affected could/should be seeing anywhere for 1-3 inches all the way up to 12-18 inches of snowfall from storm Astro.

Stay Safe All and as Always, See Snow, Drive Slow ;)

This last update Flint, Michigan climbed into second place in the national snow contest picking up 1.3 inches. Anchorage still holds onto the number 1 spot with 3.8 inches of snowfall for the 2014-2015 snow season. Keep in mind these are snow stats from early this morning and would have been just snow accumulated from Saturday.

We now have 9 cities with a population of 100,000 or more that have measurable snowfall on the season meaning at least 0.1 of an inch of snow. Syracuse, New York who is the favorite very season is tied for last place not even showing a trace of snowfall yet this season at their airport. I did see a few flakes falling just outside of the city though.

Last years snow champs Erie, Pa is showing a Trace of snowfall now and it will be interesting to see if they can do a repeat of last season, taking the snowiest big city crown away from the other big cities. South Bend, Indiana is tied for 3rd place with Madison, Wisconsin.

I know that there were several cities from the south that got at least a trace of snowfall but I’ll hold off a bit before adding them. Honorable mention goes out to Columbia, South Carolina and a couple other cities that I saw some pictures of that had a coating of snow on the ground.

As far as the states go, four have 2 cities that are in the top 10. Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan and Illinois. No doubt that it should be another fun season and hopefully it plays out like last season did with the National Snow Contest going right down til the end of the season. Stay Tuned!

Have a Great Night All ;)

It was only a matter of time that the 2014-2015 Golden Snow Globe contest would start up and it has done just that. Anchorage, Alaska has started off the national snow contest this season picking up 0.8 inches of snowfall yesterday. Remember that this contest is for Bigger cities in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more.

I had a feeling a couple of days ago that the contest would be starting up right after the weekend and it did. To be honest though I thought it was going to be a city in the Northeast that would start it up because of how cold it was suppose to get last night, Sunday night. My guess a week or so ago was that Billings, Montana was going to be the first city to receive measurable snow and that didn’t pan out either. Now that the snow contest has started maybe the rest of us won’t get any snow until January.

OK, which city do you think will win the national snow contest for the 2014-2015 snow season? I have to go with you know the city ;) Syracuse, New York of course. I’m sure those of you from Erie, Pa, Billings, Buffalo and a few of the other cities may have a different opinion though ;)

Have a Great Night All!

10/14/2014 – Breaking News - It’s official, South Bend, Indiana is back so watch out Erie, Syracuse, Buffalo, Billings and the rest of the top snowiest big cities in the US. I received a phone call from Maggie from the National Weather Service in Syracuse, Indiana returning my call and who left a msg on my phone confirming that they are receiving snow stats for this season for South Bend, In. Thanks for getting back to me Maggie, much appreciated… Let’s just hope it lasts :) Welcome back Cory and the rest of South Bend and Good Luck!

—————————————

I just updated all of the Cities in the National Snow Contest and as always took a peek at South Bend, Indiana. I do that every now and then to see if the National Weather Service out of Syracuse, Indiana is showing any snow stats for South Bend. To refresh all of our memories last season the airport stopped measuring the snowfall for the National Weather Service. That was in December of 2013 so we had to remove South Bend from the Golden Snow Globe contest for the fact we couldn’t get any official snow stats.

I just looked and I am showing that the snow stats are being listed once again so let’s that NOAA found a group or maybe got the airport to start taking measurements again. South Bend is a formidable opponent for all of the Snowy cities with a population of 100,000 or more and it would be great to have them back in. Keep your fingers crossed Cory and the rest of you from the South Bend area. Then again maybe it’s just a fluke they are showing snow stats but I haven’t seen them list them since the 2013 – 2014 early snow season back in December.

I do have a couple of calls out to the Syracuse, Indiana (Love that name Syracuse :) ) weather service so hopefully they will get back to me about what’s going on and if they are getting Snow Measurements again. Here is more info on what went down last season.

Buffalo, New York is the only city this update to join the Trace of snow club which makes 11 cities showing a trace of snow for the 2014 – 2015 snow season. There are also quite a few cities that are behind what their normal snowfall should be for this time into the season. I think I counted 19 cities in the Golden Snow Globe national snow contest that should have at least 0.1 of snow or more this update. In other words it’s closing in on us all and of course it’s just a matter of time now.

One other thing for those of you from Erie, Pa. Ruth sent me a tweet about a poll on the yourerie.com site asking when you think the first snowfall will be for Erie, Pa. If you look to the right and scroll down a bit you will see the poll at Thanks for taking the time Ruth ;)

The last several days and nights were pretty cold in the Syracuse, NY area but today was a little warmer and I think upper 70′s for Tuesday. Every nice day we can get right now I’ll take and I’m sure most of you are thinking the same way.

OK, so which city is going to be the one that starts off the 2014 – 1015 Golden Snow Globe contest? Have an Awesome Night All ;)

Do any of you have a guesstimate as to which of the snowiest cities in the US will start off the Golden Snow Globe national snow contest for the 2014 – 2015 snow season? Personally I think it’s going to be a toss up between Anchorage, Alaska, Most of the Colorado cities and Billings, Montana. I’m going to go with Billings, Montana to get the first measurable snow of the season. Keep in mind though that there has been some snow falling in Alaska, just not in Anchorage as of this last update. Leave a comment in this post with your pick if you have some time ;)

Yeah, I know it’s way too early to even think about snow especially when the weather has been really awesome the last couple of weeks. At least on most of the east coast anyways. I normally don’t even look at the snow stats this early in the season but as I mentioned on the New York Golden Snowball website I had a major computer crash on my other computer so I kind of need to give this antique computer I am using a couple of test rides to get all of the bugs out when updating the website. It’s slower than it will seem like this coming winter will seem like but so far at least it’s working.

I’m also looking for a couple of advertisers or sponsors for the website this season. If you work at a company or know of one that may be interested please have them get in contact with me for some details about the cost and site stats. I’m thinking this year, not season may hit 1,000,000 page views or at least come close to that. Our little snow site has grown each year that it’s been around which I am loving because I am getting to meet a lot of you that are from all over the country. Just click on the contact page above to get in touch with me.

I’m looking forward to the new season (That is sooo untrue) and I am sure it will be as much fun as last season was. Thanks to all of you who posted comments, sent emails and made donations to the site last season. It was an awesome group and I hope to see everyone posting again this season. Enough said and to those of you in Erie, Pa, Not Happening this season. You’re going down ;)

Enjoy the rest of what we have of the nice weather everyone. See ya all soon, ummmm, unfortunately :P

First off as always Thanks to Kyle T and Joseph J. for your donations over the summer. Even though the snowiest US cities site is kind pretty much dead over the summer the your donations helped out paying the hosting bill. Thanks again and I truly appreciate them :)
———————————————————-

I think this is the coldest it’s been in a long time here in the Syracuse area. It’s currently 56 degrees as I type this and unfortunately the next several days aren’t looking a whole lot better :( Yeah, I’m that type of person that you just hate because I whine when it’s too hot or too cold. I will take this over the 90 degree weather most of the time though.

I just did a full update on all of the snowiest cities in the US with a population of 100,000 or more. Another city is showing a trace of snow this update. Billings, Montana is the latest to see some snowflakes falling. Looking at the snow stats they are currently behind their average snowfall for the season to date which for Billings is 0.2 tenths of an inch of snow. Fort Collins, Colorado is the only other city that I saw that should have some measurable snowfall by now which is only 1 tenth of an inch.

Three cities are now showing a trace of snowfall and keep in mind that even though I have them at the top, a trace doesn’t count as measurable snowfall. So in other words it’s a 51 way tie right now for first place. Ummm, If your glass is half empty then it’s a 51 way tie for last place ;) The 3 cities with a trace are Billings, MT, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and Fort Wayne Indiana which kind of surprises me. I have to admit it is kind of depressing typing about snow. It seems like summer just started a couple of weeks ago. Hopefully this will be a fun winter at the Golden Snow Globe and winter will fly right by…

Warning, Shameless Plug – For those of you that get into Halloween decorating I have you covered. I have a couple of Halloween inflatable blowup sites that are all updated with the newest Halloween Blowups. There are several new inflatables for your yard out this season and a few of them are pretty cool. Click Halloween Inflatables and Blowups to check them out and thanks…

Enjoy what’s left of summer all and hopefully there is plenty of warm weather still to come.

First off after the kind of winter a lot of us had let me say Happy Summer Everyone, you earned it :) Once again congrats to Erie for being the snow champs this/last season. Believe it or not the new season starts in about 10 days on July 1st. Ummmm, don’t even think of any updates though until probably sometime in October….

Yeah I know it’s the first day of summer, what am I thinking? Beats me! OK, really there was a reason why I did do a snow total update for all of the snowiest cities in the US. Big cities with a population of 100,000 or more.

Every year I say that I am going to do a late update for a couple of reasons but I never do it. Once the warm weather hits the lights are pretty much shut off and the doors locked up here at the Golden Snow Globe website. Anyways one of the reasons is just to get one last update in after May to see if any of the cities have had any snow. There were a few of the cities that I did have to add snow to their totals, mainly the Colorado cities. One of the cities in Utah also had some more snow since the last update.

The other reason for doing an update this late is that the normal snowfall to date in the second column on the snow chart should also be what all of the cities receive on average for the total season. I know that those stats are out there somewhere but now if you go to the snow stats the average to date should also be what your city receives on average for the entire season. Enough about snow Huh!

I also wanted to wish all of you a Happy 1st Day of Summer :) It’s a beautiful day here in the Syracuse area with the temps in 70′s and best of all it’s not too humid. Hopefully it will be one of them hang by the pool (not mine :( ) and drink a Margarita or two kind of days. Hopefully it’s the same where you are but if you are in Arizona where my son who works for the border patrol is then I sort of pity you. 100 + degrees is a little too hot for me and don’t even tell me “but it’s a dry heat”. 100 degrees is 100 degrees and that is about 25 degrees hotter than I prefer it to be. JMO of course ;)

One last thing is that I’m curious if anyone has any ideas as to what to do with the website in the summer time? I was thinking of rain but I think it would be impossible to keep track and update all of the cities. There would be hundreds if not more plus it’s kind of depressing. Does anyone have any thoughts and if so please suggest them here in the comment section. Have a Safe, Awesome Summer Everyone :)
