In the words of President Reagan, “Well, Here They Go Again”. Anchorage pulled a sneak snowball attack on most of us since the stats were last updated. I was a little worried checking their snow stats the first update but they were way off their normals for the season so I thought last years snow champs just had a fluke of a season in 2011-2012. I received an email from Charles of Alaska curious as to when the next update may be. For good reason he was curious because they piled on some decent snow totals the last week or so. They jumped from 6th place with just 6.7 inches all the way up to being king of the snow mountain with the new snow total for Anchorage at 22.8 inches and probably climbing. WTG AK ;)

They do have some competition though and it’s Salt Lake City and the Twin Cities did pretty good this last week. Salt Lake City did get knocked of the top of the mountain but still slipped in enough snow to stay right behind Anchorage. Both Minneapolis and St. Paul went from less than an inch of snow to over a foot of snow now keeping in striking distance of last years champions.

I’m starting to think that this season is going to come down to the end of the season with probably several lead changes. Let’s hope it turns out like that to keep it exciting. As far as the North East goes it’s still pretty pitiful so far this season but it’s starting to look like some cold air may be coming around this week. The big question is will it stick around for the season?

What’s you thoughts on which city you think will be the champs this season? Leave a comment in this post as to how you think this season will pan out. Just click the bubble to comment.

Have an AWESOME weekend everyone ;)

First off there has been some crazy weather already this season so some help is needed. There are most likely a few cities that aren’t listed here that have gotten snow this season. If you live in a city with a population of 100,000 or more and have gotten some snow please let us know and most likely we will add you to the lineup. Thanks :)

Yeah I know, it’s about time huh. I’m starting a little bit later than normal but other than a few cities there hasn’t been a whole lot as far as snowfall goes going on. Of course I was just as curious as the rest of you to see how things are starting out so far for the 2012 – 2013 snow season. The snow stats have just been updated and the rankings for the cities are pretty interesting so far.

Anchorage, Alaska who kicked but last season is starting out pretty lame this season. I think this is the least amount of snow I have seen for Anchorage in the last couple of years of keeping the snow stats for the Golden Snowball Contest. Congrats to them once again though for a great snow 2011 – 2012 snow season. I’m a big fan of Gold Rush Alaska and it was pretty cool after keeping track of the snow in AK last season to watch the first episode of the show this year. Just to see all of the snow on the ground and the problems it was causing for all of the crews trying to get started digging and clearing the snow and ice off. If you get a chance it’s an awesome show IMO and worth checking out.

When you look at the snow stats you will see 2 numbers. The first is what place the city is in right now and the 2nd is how they placed last season. I know we are just beginning but I was surprised with a few of the cities that are in the top ten and just as surprised at a few that dropped way down from the top 10 snowiest cities with a population of 100,000 or more.

Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah take the top 2 spots on the snow mountain moving up quite a few spots from how they ended last season. Bridgeport, Connecticut, Newark, NJ and New York City are also off to a great start. Other than those the North East has been pretty quiet so far including here in Syracuse. Rochester, NY, Grand Rapids, Michigan and South Bend Indiana are the slackers so far this season. No need to worry though about those cities because you know they will be moving up the snow mountain some time soon. It’s only just begun and let’s hope it’s an exciting snow contest right to the end :)

Have a Great Weekend Everyone!!!

I just did an update but ended up cutting out about 25 cities and probably should have cut out a lot more. From here on I’ll be updating snow stats for the top 40 cities and come the end of the contest I’ll update all of the cities that we had in the snow contest most of the season. Believe it or not the national snow contest doesn’t end until May 15th mainly for the fact that the Colorado cities still get some snow up until around then.

With the way the weather has been it’s kind of hard to even think about the national snow contest. Here in Syracuse we set a bunch of high temperature records and even hit 80 which is pretty much unheard of in March. I know a bunch of other cities have enjoyed the record breaking weather also. I did do a snow dance for the Syracuse area but that won’t help Syracuse in this contest. It may help us win the New York Golden Snowball contest though :)

Right now it looks like it’s going to come down to Anchorage, Alaska and Lakewood, Colorado. All of the other cities are at least 70 inches away from the top of the snow mountain. If I were a betting man, oh yeah, I am, I would be putting my bet down on Anchorage. If your city was dropped from the current list and you get some decent snow let me know and I’ll add your city back in.

Have a Great Week All :)

There wasn’t a whole lot of changes this last update and none of the cities really stepped up to the plate to challenge Anchorage who still holds the top spot by a zillion snowflakes.

Rochester, New York has finally made it into the top 10 with the snow it received since the last update. That knocked Worcester, Mass out of the top 10 and dropped a few of the cities down a spot. The biggest climb up the hill this update was by Lincoln, Nebraska who picked up ovr a foot of snow and jumped around 22 spots on the snow mountain. Omaha also made a jump of around 14 spots. Nowhere’s near what they would need to get near the top though.

As for 2 time repeat national snow champs Syracuse? In the voice of the Geico Gecko in NYC “Foget about It”. :)

On a side note Sorry about it being awhile for a full update but I do get a top 10 snow update in sometimes and not a full update so make sure you check the top 10 snowiest cities out also.

Have a Great Weekend All ;)

According to an article at MSN – The Punxsutawney Groundhog Club made their decree Thursday morning in central Pennsylvania: Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow, and there’ll be six more weeks of winter. The announcement was met with boos from the enormous crowd gathered in Punxsutawney.

My question is what winter? Never mind winter but this whole snow season has been a bust so far. Records of warmer than normal temperatures are being set all over the country most likely. As for snow, what snow? To think people let out gasps and whines when they heard the news seems to go against the way the weather has been so far. I think it should have been whines and gasps if he didn’t see his shadow. That could have ended a good thing, the weather pattern that the US has had so far this winter. For those that don’t like the snow at least.

Phil

This by far has been the most boring updates I’ve done since keeping the stats the last couple of seasons.  A few jumps in the slopes here and there but no big snow for any of the cities.  I will agree with the rodent though.  I think within the next 7 – 10 days that jet stream that has been hanging to the north of the US will start dropping and when it does I think it may stick around for a bit.  Hopefully at least through March.  Keep an eye on the Colorado cities as they should be picking up some snow in some of the cities.  If it pans out that they get some decent snow I’ll update them again to see how they gain on Anchorage.

Have a Great Weekend All ;)

Just did a full update on the snow totals and Anchorage, AK just isn’t looking back to see if anyone is gaining on them. They’ve added around a couple more feet to their snow totals and have almost double the snow as 2nd place Lakewood, Co. Watching the weather channel and some other stations plus getting some comments from people who live in Alaska some of the towns/cities like Cordova, Alaska have received around 18 foot of snow so far this season. No doubt it will be hard to catch Anchorage but there is still plenty of time left in the 2011-2012 season. The only problem is it has to actually stop snowing there for any of our cities to catch up. WTG Anchorage :)

Here is some information on Anchorage and Ak that Anne from Alaska posted in a comment.  Thanks Anne :)

I am here in Anchorage and as of yesterday we broke all previous records for the amount of snow to date. We have had 81 inches as of yesterday and it is still snowing today. 81 inches is about twice what we normally have to date. In 94-95 we got 77 inches by January 9 and ended up with 120 for the winter. That year was beaten by 1954-5 which got 132.8 inches for the year and only 75 inches by January 9th. I was here in 94-5 and I recall that everyone started worrying about roofs collapsing under the snow. It happened in several places in town including the church down the street from me.
The small towns of Cordova and Valdez are also getting hit with more snow than usual:

The Colorado cities are starting to fall a littl bit but Lakewood, Co still has a nice snow pile seperating them for the 2nd spot on the snow mountain. With this last storm that came across the Great Lakes Erie, Pa was able to catch some of the white fluffy stuff along with several other cities in the northeast.

Syracuse, the snow champ for the last couple of years also managed to sled into the top 10 for the first time this season. They still have a long ways to go though if they want to defend their title of snowiest city in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more. I don’t think I would bet against them just yet as it looks like the cold air may be around for awhile this time. Buffalo, Erie, Rochester and some of the other lake effect snow cities have a decent chance at a big comeback for the fact that the Great Lakes haven’t frozen over yet this season. Last I heard was that Lake Erie was around 40 degrees which means that anytime some colder air comes across the lakes there is a good shot of seeing some lake effect snow pile up. It will be interesting to see how the next few weeks play out.

Hey, Have a Super Weekend All ;)

This has been one of the least snowiest seasons so far that I can remember especially in the north east. That could be changing though now that a blast of cold air has finally come over the great lakes producing some lake effect snow. Forecasts of up to a foot or more turned out to be a bust for cities like Syracuse and the surrounding areas but at least some snow fell. The top cities like Anchorage and the Colorado cities all took a break this last week giving the rest of us a chance to chip away at their lead.

South Bend, Indiana picked up enough snowflakes to move up 18 spots on the snow mountain which also has them in the top 10 now. Syracuse finally went over the one foot mark (pitiful for this late in the season) and managed to jump 23 spots up the mountain. Let’s hope that Alaska and Colorado will keep holding off enough to let the rest of us to keep catching up to them. Several other cities are starting to get into the snow contest and no doubt there is still enough time left in the season for some big changes in the lineup :)

I’m starting to see some forecasts about a possible coastal storm if everything falls into place toward the end of next week. Lets hope it all comes together ;) Enough for now! This is a good basketball night. Duke up first who I always cheer to lose, no offense to you Blue Devil fans and then Syracuse, the number 1 team in the country right now that I always cheer to win. Yes I bleed Orange :)

Have a GREAT Week All and Go ‘CUSE!!!

The Colorado cities are still looking pretty good adding some snow with each update. Anchorage is also still adding to their snow totals to go on top of that storm they had earlier in the season. Enough to keep them on top of the Golden Snow Globe mountain. Erie, Pa a city that always has me worried jumped 19 spots to number 11 this update. They are still far from the top but a city to keep an eye on. Syracuse, the national snow champs with a population of 100,000 or more is looking at having their least snowiest December on record with just 2.2 inches to date :( . My guess is unless some snow starts falling soon a lot of cities may have their least snowiest December or top 5 on record.

That said I’m curious as to which city you think will win this seasons snow contest? Just click on the little bubble and leave a comment in this post. Do you think Anchorage will be able to hold on to the lead? Will one of the Colorado cities be the king of the snow mountain? Any chance of Syracuse, Buffalo or Rochester making a run to the top? Let us know who you think will win :)

Have a Great Week All ;)

I was watching the weather channel and saw that Alaska was getting hit by a pretty good storm. They mentioned winds of 100 MPH and snow. I was also hearing that Colorado and a couple other states were getting some snow so figured lets do a snowfall total update. It was worth doing :)

Anchorage, Alaska jumped into 1st place and are currently the king of the snow mountain for snowiest city in the US with a population of 100,000 or more. To be honest with you when I started this contest a couple of years ago I was thinking Anchorage would be the snowiest city but it hasn’t happened yet and probably won’t. I still think Erie, pa is a city for all of us to watch out for along with some of the cities in Colorado and New York. Of course with the weather patterns always changing who knows, we may be surprised by a city from the south coastal area ;)

A little bit of shuffleing in the top 10 but not a whole lot. At least 30 of the cities have at least measuable snow now of at least 0.1. The snow champ for the last 2 years and a couple of the other snow cities that are normaly on top still are only showing just a trace. I think this is the season we have a new king of the snow mountain and it should be interesting to see which one it is at the end of the snow season.

I noticed that some traffic was coming to the site from a school. I checked it out and it’s an assignment for the children & one question is to find out which of the cities we have listed here has the the most snow. I started thinking I better contact the teacher because it looks like the assignment has a date range between Nov. 7th – 18th. If that’s the case the students that got an early start will have one answer an the students that got a late start, students like I was will have another answer :) Anyways, there isn’t a school name so there really isn’t a way to contact them. Good Luck to the students though :( I’m sure the teacher will know that 2 different cities led so both would be right.

Hey, if ya need a new 2012 calendar we just happen to have them :)   Click here for new calendars for 2012 .  We also have 2012 almanac calendars!

Have a Super Snowy Week All!!!

I finally got a full update in and the top 10 snowiest cities shifted around quite a bit. Boston was pushed out of the top 10 by Green Bay, Wi who has been on the move the last few updates. Three cities from New York are in the 1, 2, 3 spots on the snow mountain.

Buffalo managed to move up to third place which is a little bit of a surprise seeing how they are in 4th place over at goldensnowball.com which is a contest between 5 cities in NY. Binghamton, NY holds the #3 spot there with Buffalo in 4th place. Right now it’s Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo holding the top 3 but other than Syracuse it’s still pretty close between several cities for 2nd place on the mountain. I’m pretty sure that Syracuse has this seasons Golden Snow Globe wrapped up :) We still have to wait a bit because it snows forever in Colorado. Not that they have a shot but just in case.

I’ll probably only be doing a couple more full updates but will try like I always say to at least get more top 10 snowiest city stats updated than I have been doing.

Hey, have a super week all ;)
