First off a big Thanks to Rhonda for your donation to the site. I know I’ve said it many times but your donations are appreciated and do help out big time. Thank You Rhonda :)

Thanks to Andy also for taking the time to send me some info I was looking for about the lakes freezing over.  I’ll post about that in a day or two.

OK!!!  Buffalo, NY continues to slowly gain ground on the snow lead that Erie, PA has in the Golden Snow Globe contest. Buffalo is now just a snow storm away or 15.1 inches away to be exact.

I checked back a little over a week ago and on the January 4th update Buffalo was in 4th place and 30.1 inches behind Erie, Pa. Buffalo has made up about 15 inches in the last week or so. Go Buffalo!

Right now everything seems to be pretty quiet across the US as far as snowfall goes. A lot of rain here in the Syracuse area but at least it warmed up for a few days hitting 50+ degrees which seemed like a heat wave after that -25 – -35 below wind chill factor that came around for a couple of days.

Let’s talk College Hoops. We all know that Syracuse is Americas favorite team :P but other than the SU Orange, who is your next favorite college basketball team? Be careful in answering this though because any replies with the Duke Blue Devils may get banned.  The same goes for Arizona who is ranked number 1 in the country in the polls ahead of Syracuse.  I’M JOKING OF COURSE ;)  I’m curious for the fact that some of the states have several cities in the snow contest and also have several college basketball teams in their state.

PA is a good example. I know some people including my brother who lives in Philly and most of them root for Villanova. I’m guessing you folks in Pittsburgh root for The Pitt Panthers first. Erie, Pa I don’t have a clue about but would guess maybe Pitt? Anyways, leave a comment in this post to let me know who your favorite college basketball team is in the country.

Have an Awesome Weekend All :)

Top 10 Snowiest cities Updated 1/8 4:30 PM - I was able to get a top 10 update in and there have been a couple of changes on the snow mountain. Buffalo, NY climbed a couple of spots and are now in 2nd place on the mountain. Buffalo picked up more than enough snow to slip past Syracuse, NY and Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Syracuse dropped down 2 spots and went from 2nd place to 4th while Grand Rapids was able to stay in the number 3 slot. Way to go Buffalo! If it’s not my Syracuse I have to root for a NY city at least. Is Erie feeling the pressure yet :) Stay Tuned!

Update 1/8 - South Bend Residents Please Read – I meant to explain why South Bend, Indiana was removed from the list yesterday but forgot to. Cory posted a comment which reminded me about it and here is Cory’s comment and my reply and believe me I think it stinks that we had to pull South Bend. Hopefully things get straightened out and for anyone or a group who lives or is always around the airport NOAA would like to hear from you. This is a 24/7 operation and I believe measurements need to be taken every 6 hours around the clock. You can contact Jeff Logsdon at the National Weather Service at 574-834-1104

Cory Asked - What happened to South Bend?!? We still have a population of over 100,000. We have received 46.4″ so far this winter. I have a link to the website. This is according to NOAA.

http://www.wndu.com/weather

ME - Hi Cory, unfortunately I just pulled South Bend this last update and trust me, I didn’t want to. We have been waiting for NOAA to post their official snow totals for awhile now and they haven’t since around mid December. We looked around to see what was going on and Stephen who posts here found out why. It appears there is some kind of dispute going on with NOAA and the airport as far as someone at the airport measuring the snow. From what I have read is that any snow stats for South Bend for the time being anyways are unofficial snow stats. I’m not sure where WNDU is getting their stats from unless they are taking measurements where they are at. I know that NOAA is looking for snow spotters that lives or who spends time around the airport to help out. Do you know if WNDU is near the airport or are you Cory? Here is the info about it and hopefully South Bend will be back before the season is over. Sorry about that.

This last full update was all about Michigan and Illinois snow totals. Just about every city from those states climbed up the snow mountain including Grand Rapids which is now in 3rd place. Michigan for the time being owns the top 10 snowiest cities in the US with 4 cities making it into the top 10 this update.

I did get a full update in and Erie, Pa still holds a pretty commanding lead right now but watch your backs because it seems each update some of the slow starters keep closing in on the top cities. More to come on this last update a little later when I have some more time :)

Updated 1/4/14 - Just a heads up that I did a fast update going 20 cities deep. The reason being that I knew that Worcester and Boston, Mass still had snow to add from the storm. Sure enough, Worcester, Mass had enough snow to make it into the top 10 snowiest cities this season. Worcester got off to a slow start so far but let’s not forget how close they kept the race last season keeping up with Erie, Pa and Syracuse, NY ;) Last season was close right to the end so we may not want to worry about them just yet but we better keep an eye on them. One more nor’easter and they will be climbing the snow mountain fast ;)

——————————————————————————————-

Erie, Pa now has over six feet of snow on the season as of yesterday. Second place Syracuse, NY who has just over 4 feet of snow did manage to chip away an inch or two from Erie’s lead over them. Hey, this early in the snow season it’s all about chipping an inch at a time away. Of course come tomorrow the rest of the cities will probably take another step back from Erie. All in all it was a pretty decent storm that went by and a lot of the Golden Snow Globe cities were able to grab some of the white fluffy stuff from the sky.

There were several cities that stood out this round but I think Boston, Mass stood out the most. So far they are reporting 10.6 inches of snow for yesterday breaking a date record of 8.0 inches which dates all the way back to 1904. Way to go Boston!

There was a lot of pushing down and climbing up the snow mountain going on. All three of the Wisconsin cities (Milwaukee, Green Bay & Madison) were pushed out of the snowiest top 10 cities. Replacing them was another Pa city, Pittsburgh along with Ann Arbor, Michigan and Cleveland, Ohio. Right now we have cities from 7 different states representing the top 10 snowiest cities in the US :)

Some of the biggest movers climbing the snow mountain this update were –

Boston, Mass moved up 20 spots
Chicago, Illinois +9 spots
Indianapolis, Indiana +9
Fort Wayne, Indiana +8
Philadelphia, Pa +7

Stay Tuned and Have an Awesome Weekend and Don’t forget to root for Americas Favorite Basketball Team, The Syracuse Orange :P

Erie, Pa just keeps piling in on and now has a lead of more than a couple of feet of snow. Right now they are leading the second place city Syracuse by 25.7 inches of snow but can they hold on to that big lead? Oh, and what is up with Lake Erie? Has it frozen over yet or did you folks in Erie buy an ice breaker to keep the lake open through the winter ;)

Chances are that Syracuse and some of the other cities may be able to cut into their lead with the snow that is coming through right now. Hopefully if all goes according to plan, my plan ;) Erie’s snow will stop sometime soon and the rest of us to the East/NE will be able to chip away at the big lead they have right now. Here at my house just outside the Syracuse area it’s been coming down all day but pretty much just moderate snowfall is falling with a heavy snow squall every now and then. Right now the heavier snow on the National radar seems to be just missing Syracuse to the east. A little more shift in the winds going more northerly instead of NE could make things interesting.

What is it doing in your neck of the woods? Is it Still snowing in Erie, Pa, Buffalo, Rochester, NY or in any of the other Golden Snow Globe cities? If so let us know and thanks ;)

With the holidays over and family and friends gone for now it’s time to get back to work. I spent about 2 hours so far going through spam on both of the snow sites and probably have another hour to go. I do my best to look through the thousands of them in hopes that I don’t delete one of your comments or emails. Hopefully nothing that should be posted was deleted and if so I apologize. Stay tuned because the next couple of days will be interesting.

Have a Great Day Everyone and as always, See Snow – Drive Slow ;)

12/30 - OK, an hour before the 30th but just another heads up that I finally got a full update in. No change on the top spot, go figure but several other changes. The Wisconsin cities made up quite a bit of ground and jumped pretty far up on the snow mountain. The king of the mountain Erie, Pa is kind of just chilling on the top spot and hasn’t a worry in the world yet but 2nd place is open top a ton of cities :)

Have a Great Day Everyone :)

——————————————

Just a heads up that I was finally able to get a top 10 update in.  It’s been a busy week visiting with family for the Christmas holidays and I’ve tried a few times to get an update in.  I’m hoping that I can maybe get a full update in sometime tomorrow.  I hope everyone had an awesome Christmas :)

I was able to get a full update in today and there was a little bit of movement in the top 10 snowiest city lineup. Sioux Falls, South Dakota has once again fallen out of the top 10 being replaced by Salt Lake City, Utah who had some decent snow since the last update setting a date record. Salt Lake City picked up 6.9 inches of new snow yesterday breaking the date record of 5.2 inches which dates back to 1951. Welcome back to the top 10 snowiest cities Salt Lake City ;)

Erie continues to dominate this seasons snow contest and continues to hold the crown so far as the King of the Snow Mountain. Erie still has over a oot of snow lead in the contest. The question is, can they hold on to it until the end of the season? I think a better question would be when will Erie give up the top spot on the snow mountain ;) I believe it’s way too early for any of the snowiest big cities in the US to hold a lead right through the season but you never know.

Speaking of how early it is in the snow season winter hasn’t even arrived yet. It’s pretty impressive that some of the Golden Snow Globe cities have had the amount of snow they have had so far before Winter even begins which is tomorrow. Winter Solstice which has the shortest daylight of the year and longest darkness starts tomorrow afternoon, Saturday December 21st at 12:11 EST, eastern standard time. When the kids were little I use to always bring them to the window or take them outside to wave and say “Goodbye Fall, Hello Winter” :) Ok. I still do it every year when I happen to remember the time ;)

The good news is that we start gaining sunlight time from there on with the daylight getting longer and the darkness getting shorter :) A minute here and a minute there starts to add up after awhile and before you know it Spring will be right around the corner. Of course before that happens a lot of us will have to probably deal with a hundred inches or more of new snow.

This weeks movers were Boston and Worcester, Mass and Bridgeport, Connecticut.  Boston climbed up 24 spots on the snow mountain while Worcester and Bridgeport both climbed about 12 spots.  WTG!

With Christmas coming up fast it’s going to be hit and miss here at goldensnowglobe.com.   I will be getting some top 10 updates in though during the holiday season and hopefully at least one or two full updates.  I like to see how all of the cities are doing just as much as you all do.

It took awhile this year for the Christmas spirit to kick in for me but it finally did yesterday which means I have a ton of catching up to do on all of my Christmas stuff :(   Only four days left for me to finish shopping, decorating and of course baking my Christmas cookies :)   Yes I bake!  I have been a bachelor for quite awhile off and on so I pretty much do it all now.  I do have great family though and my sisters and other relatives do take care of me with some nice cookie trays also for Christmas ;)

Have an Awesome Weekend Everyone!

Erie, Pa has cushioned their lead with some more of the white fluffy stuff falling since the last update. I heard from a lot of people from Erie saying how hard the lake effect snow was coming down the other night. The rest of us better hope that it’s stopped by now because they have over a foot lead now on the second place city, Da’Cuse.

I know it seems like it’s Erie, Erie, Erie, Marsha, Marsha, Marsha right now but you have to be impressed with their snow totals this early in the season. Just think, they have more than double of what their normal snowfall should be for this time in the season. Right now they are at 45.0 inches of snow and counting compared to their normal of 21.1 inches of snow. What stands out the most is that last season at this time they had a whopping or make that wimpy 3.1 inches of snow. They are almost 42 inches ahead of last season at this time. WTG Erie but watch your back. We are all coming to knock you down that snow mountain ;)

Erie, Pa, one of the heavy weights when it comes to snowiest big cities better keep it up though because they are being chased right now from the great state of New York cities and they are the Big 3. Syracuse, Rochester and Buffalo, NY. It’s been snowing off and on in a couple of those cities and most likely they will be adding to their snow totals.

Up to the north of Syracuse in places like Fulton, the Tug Hill area, Oswego and Watertown just to name a few have been piling up several feet of snow this past week or so. I’m sure there are a lot of the smaller cities and towns around Erie and in a couple of other states that are getting pounded also. I get a lot of complaints or comments about how much snow they get and why aren’t they in the snow contest. I respect all of you who live in those places that get hammered, with snow that is ;) and how you have to deal with it. The reason is that when the storms hit in the big cities it obviously affects a lot more people. One of the other reasons is that The National Weather service doesn’t report the snow stats for most of the smaller cities. They do for some but it would be almost impossible to get Official snow stats for most of the smaller cities. That and not to mention there would probably be a couple of hundred of them and by the time I finished the first update the season would be over. So like I mentioned, my respect kudos to all of the smaller cities and towns like Booneville, Tug Hill Oswego and so on.

Have an Awesome Night All!

Updated Right Around Midnight - It seems like I am trying to make a Snow Angel but I just keep going around in circles the last few days. With the Thanksgiving Day holiday I am having a hard enough time trying to figure out what day it is let alone trying to keep up with which city is leading the National snow contest. In the voice of President Ronald Reagan all I can say is “Here We Go Again“. Some snow stats came out a little earlier and the New leader who was an old leader a few updates ago is once again Erie, Pa. Congrats again to all of you from Erie on pushing Syracuse down the snow mountain and reclaiming the top spot :) I guess I’ll just leave it at that and say STAY TUNED once again ;)

Updated 2:30 PM Friday 11/29 - Wow, talk about a lot of different lead changes. We have a new leader in the Golden Snow Globe National Snow Contest and go figure it’s Syracuse, NY., last seasons champion. This is something like 3 different leaders in 3 days and the good news is that the snow race is still really close. Only 4 tenths of an inch is separating the top 3 cities which are Syracuse, NY, Erie, PA and Rochester, NY. Just 0.1 inches separating Erie and Rochester for second place. If I were a betting man, oh yeah I am :) I would bet that there will be quite a few lead changes on the top of the snow mountain before this season wraps up. Enough for now and if anything changes come the next update from the National Weather Service then I’ll post another update. Stay Tuned ;)

—————————————————————————————-

Updated Noon Thanksgiving – Sorry Erie but your spot as King of the Snow Mountain was pretty short lived.  I just updated the New York snow contest and as of the wee hours of the morning Rochester, NY has taken the lead by a couple of snowflakes now.  Rochester is reporting 11.6 inches of snowfall as of the end of yesterday.  You were there for a few hours at least Erie, more than my Syracuse can say ;)

Happy Thanksgiving Everyone!

—————————————————————————————-

Congrats to Erie, Pa for taking the lead in the National Snow Contest by a couple of snowflakes. Erie picked up just enough snow to overtake Anchorage, Alaska for the top spot on the snow mountain with this last storm that seemed to benefit the northeast cities. Not mine of course but a lot of the other cities in the snow contest moved up the mountain and as of about 3:00am this morning Erie is the king. The question now is can they hold onto the lead with the top being pretty close between a few of the cities? The cold air looks like it is here for awhile so most like the snow will keep falling. Enough for now on this Thanksgiving Day. Enjoy All!

Happy Thanksgiving From Our Family to Yours! Have a Safe Happy Holiday :)

OK, on to the snow stuff and it’s been a busy, snowy weekend for some of us. 3 cities fell out of the top 10 on the snow mountain and of course 3 new cities filled their in their slot on the mountain. The 3 cities that dropped out are Salt Lake City, Utah, Denver, Colorado and Cleveland, Ohio. My guess is that a couple of those cities will be back in the top 10 before the season is over.

New into the top 10 are Erie, Pa, Rochester, NY and Syracuse, New York in which all 3 of the cities benefitted this weekend being able to tap into some decent lake effect snow. Syracuse actually tied a snow record for the date yesterday which went back to 1981 picking up 4.5 inches of new snow which is pretty good for this time in the season. I was watching the snow bands yesterday and last night and I thought maybe Erie and Rochester may have gotten a little more but either way the Golden Snow Globe contest is starting to shape up.

One of the fun things about this national snow contest is getting to meet and yes, puff smoke, poke fun and do some friendly trash talking about each others cities and their chance of winning. Yes, that is allowed here in the comment section as long as it’s all in fun. Some of our visitors from Erie seem to dish it out pretty good and the last couple of days it’s been fun going back and forth with a guy I’ll call the Dr. on twitter. All in fun and of course he suggests that we, me being from Syracuse are afraid of Erie, Pa :) I do admit that Erie’s snow stats are one of the first one I look at and keep an eye on during the winter but afraid? Ha! I told the Dr. though that you people from Erie better start making some babies because your population is getting pretty close to the cut off population of 100,000 according to the last census. Only around 1000 people are keeping you in and I would hate to have to drop Erie from the contest, one of our strongest competitors, NOT. Joking aside I think the census is every 10 years so you have plenty of time ;)

Speaking of the census and the populations of the cities, good lead in huh ;) I’ve been putting off updating the new populations since the 2010 census came out but I finally started to update the cities last night and I should have them all updated in a couple of days. OK, enough rambling. Some of us need to keep an eye on what could be a storm coming up the coast come mid week. As much as I like a good storm I’m kind of hoping this one turns out to be rain for most of us just because it’s Thanksgiving week and a lot of people will be travelling. OK, really enough rambling on now.

How it Looked with Snow at My House Last Night

Lake Effect Snowfall in Minoa, NY 11/23/13

HAVE a GREAT WEEK EVERYONE and a HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!!

Stephen and I started talking about dropping a few of the cities in the Golden Snow Globe contest and adding a couple new ones. I went through the list to see who the lightweights were and dropped 6 of the old cities from the snow mountain and added 2 new ones that Stephen suggested that now have a population over 100,000 people. One is obviously a good one because they went straight to the top and are currently the King of The Snow Mountain.

Billings, Montana which shows a population of 106,954 is now leading the snow derby showing 11.1 inches of snow so far. More than enough to slide by Anchorage, AK and Sioux Falls, SD. The other new city to the snowy city list is Rochester, Minnesota which is showing a population of 108,992 as of the last US census taken. They are starting out in 18th place in the snow derby and hopefully will be a performer also.

Dropped from the list after looking at some snow stats were 6 cities and if you’re from one of those cities don’t worry, if we see that you are getting a decent amount of snow we will definitely add you back to the list. We did leave in some cities that probably could have been dropped and we will see how it goes down the slope to decide whether to keep them in or drop them. A lot of the ones we kept in that are underperformers are the coastal cities on the East – Northeast coast. The reason being of course for the fact that Nor’easters and coastal storms seem to be hitting us quite a bit lately. I think one is possible come this week as a matter of fact. Anyways, don’t take it personally and like I mentioned if your city starts getting some decent snow just drop us a comment and we will add it back to the list.

The cities we dropped this round were (Wichita and Topeka, Kansas,) (Boise City, Idaho), (Springfield, Missouri), (Oklahoma and Tulsa, OK). Start doing the snow dances so hopefully we will be seeing you back on the list before the season is over ;)

IMPORTANT – If you see a city that gets quite a bit of snow on average each season then let us know. We want to add as much competition as possible to keep the snow contest fun like it was last season. The closer it is the more fun it is. One of the reasons for that change is that it takes anywhere from 2 – 4 hours every time I do a full update. I’d like to get it down to around 2 hours which would allow me to get in more updates during the snow season. OK, enough rambling for now ;)

Have an awesome weekend everyone and snow is in the forecast for a lot of cities. See Snow, Drive Slow ;)
