Snowiest City Update Coming Sometime Today

February 14th, 2010

First off I’ve gotten hit with a lot of great emails and thanks for all the response. I’ll be answering them as soon as I have a chance. The same with the comments on here. I am reading all of them as they are posted.

The top 10 snowiest cities have been updated and hopefully all of the cities will be updated. I’ll post here when the update is done. Syracuse Orange -vs- Louisville at 1:00 PM so chances are that there will be a 2 hour break at 1 :) GO CUSE!!!

Happy Valentines Day All :)

Baltimore Storms Past Syracuse for The Lead

February 11th, 2010

I just did a full update and if the stats are right Baltimore is now king of the snow mountain. Just typing that made me have to take another look at the stats. A city from Maryland, the state that has one of my favorite vacation places (Ocean City) that on average has about a foot of snow at this time is leading if my stats are correct. I’m loving it :) Ummm, as long as they don’t hold the lead for too long that is ;)

Here is a good article by Frank Roylance who is a reporter for The Baltimore Sun that puts into perspective as to what is going on in Baltimore, Maryland snow wise! http://weblogs.marylandweather.com/2010/02/so_far_this_winter_6_feet_7_in.html

Washington, DC has made it into the top 10 even after the switch from Dulles to National. Most likely I’ll be talking to someone from NOAA in the next week or so to see what they think about the locations and so on.

The Pa. cities are cashing in big time with these snow storms with 3 of them in the top ten. Erie, Pa I expected to be a tough competitor but I didn’t think Pittsburgh and no way Philadelphia to be in there. My brother lives in Philly and in the last 2 days he must have called here about 10 times rubbing it in :(

If you have any cool snow pictures you can send them to comments@goldensnowglobe.com and I’ll post them here on the site. Just let me know where the pics were taking and any other info you want to add.

Here in Syracuse all is pretty quiet with just snow showers in the forecast and I won’t even begin to tell those of you in DC, PA and Maryland how jealous I am right now. That just doesn’t sound right either!

Have a Great Snowy Day All!

Washington, Baltimore and Philly Piling on the Snow

February 8th, 2010

First off I’m sorry about the lack of updates but a member of my family has been really sick. I’ll try to get at least the top 10 snowiest cities updated more frequently like at least every other day and as time permits with the full update.

Who would have thought that at this time in the season that Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC would be where they are right now in the snow lineup. It gets even better or worse depending how you look at it. There are a couple of storms going on right now and if all falls in place there could be a good chance that a couple of those cities may be in the lead for the snowiest city in the United States in the next few days. Pretty cool IMO :)

All 3 of the cities are about 50 inches above their normal snowfall for this time in the season give or take a little. I was expecting or at least hoping for a good snow contest for the first season but now way did I see it playing out like this. Syracuse is still king of the snow mountain but the snow race has a lot of snow days to go and right now the top prize as snowiest big city (pop 100,000) is up for grabs. Hopefully we’ll have more frequent updates from here on!

Have a Great Week All!

The Snowiest Cities in the US are Updated

January 30th, 2010

OK, I’m an idiot ;) I did an update on the stats late yesterday except there was one problem. I forgot to upload them to the site. Anyways he stats have been updated and they should be up to date as of earlier yesterday, 1/29. A few changes in the top 10 but Da’Cuse continues to hold the lead. Erie, Pa and Buffalo, NY are closing in on Syracuse and it’s a pretty tight snow race right now. I’ll try and get another update done in the next day or two once the storm that’s going on now is over.

Have a Great Weekend All :)

Boring Comes to Mind – Snow Stats Updated 1/17/2010

January 18th, 2010

No doubt this was the most boring update since we started keeping track of the snowiest cities. No changes in the top 10 and only a few changes for the rest of the US cities. It’s looking like some changes may be coming weather wise but it may depend on whether it’s rain, snow or a mix. A good part of the northeast is seeing rain and a mix right now as I type including where I’m from, the Syracuse area.

To the north west I’m hearing about several storm systems moving in one after another but again it will depend on the temperatures and where they hit. Could be a chance for the Colorado cities to start up again. Let’s hope that the Arctic air come back and gets some of the lakes cranking out the LES sooner rather than later.

Have a Great Work Week All :)

The United States Snowiest City Contest Updated 1/13/10

January 12th, 2010

1:00 AM – Wednesday - OK, I just updated the top 10 snowiest cities and so far no changes since earlier. I’m looking at the snow stats and remember this post is coming from the Oracle of the Syracuse Golden Snowball snow stats so I am definitely puling for the Northeast cities verses the rest of the country. I will and do try to keep it unbiased though. Syracuse (Woo Oho – see unbiased) so far is in the lead but there are several cities that have some of us in the NY area a little worried ;)

I think the city that scares me personally the most of becoming the King of The Snow Mountain for the first ever Golden Snow Globe Award is probably Erie,Pa. They have shown over and over again that they are definitely a worthy competitor when it comes to piling up the snow.

Other cities to pay a ton of attention to are the other snow belt cities in New York. Buffalo and Rochester! They are due to overtake Syracuse and it’s just a matter of time. It’s been several years but this could be the snow season that one of them skates to the top.

Michigan has been on a roll. Several of the cities around the Great Lakes seem to be catching up pretty quick to the top cities. The big factor in my opinion right now is which way the wind blows and how much of the lakes start to freeze over. With the cold temps the last couple of weeks the chances are that Lake Erie may be pretty much almost frozen over which may stop the Buffalo and surrounding cities from compensating on the lake effect snow but never count them out.

This being the first National Snow contest ever and me being the clueless person that I am when it comes to Geography I think I’ll have to read up on how the other great lakes freeze up, if they even do in the cold months. Either that or ya all can clue me in on it. Feel free to leave comments about the weather in your neck of the woods.

Hey, Have a Super Day All!

Early – 1/12 - I’ll post a summary of this latest update later but as it stands Fort Collins, Co has finally been knocked down the snow mountain I think for the first time this season. I’m sure they will be back though along with several of the other cities. My bet is there are going to be several lead changes in the next several weeks. Stay Tuned and Congrats to Syracuse for taking the king of the mountain. For now anyways :) !

The Snowiest US Cities Updated 1/9/2010

January 7th, 2010

The new snow stats have been updated as of 1/9/10. Click Here to check out the snowiest US cities! There was a more shifting around in the top 10 snowiest cities. A lot of the cities around the Great Lakes seemed to fair well this last update. Mostly because of the cold air creating some good lake effect snow. The chances are there just may be a new leader come the next update. Will it be Syracuse or will another of the top 10 cities take the snowy spot as King of the snow mountain.

The Snow Storm is Wrapping Up

December 20th, 2009

Ok! Most of the snowiest US city stats have been updated and man were there some changes. No to the top 10 are Philadelphia, Pa, Washington, (Dulles) and ummmm, errrr Baltimore, Maryland. Yup you read it right. There are still a couple to report though.

After that storm went through Philly, Pa picked up 23.2 inches of snow which I find kind of funny because my brother lives there and is from Syracuse originally. The part that is funny is that he always complains that Philly doesn’t get any snow. Well they finally get close to a couple of feet of snow and guess what. He is coming to Syracuse today where there is no snow. Bummer for him I guess :)

Baltimore was next with 22.2 inches of snowfall which has to be way over their annual snowfall totals I would think. When I have some tie I’ll try and see which cities are already over their annual snow totals already. The Dulles airport picked up 21 inches which is just as amazing as some of the other cities. Most of these stats were reported around 5:00 pm give or take a couple of hours so the chances are that there will be some changes come tomorrow once everything catches up.

The cities that fell out of the top 10 were Buffalo, New York, Madison Wisconsin, Green Bay and Omaha, Nebraska. I’m sure at least a couple of those cities won’t be out for too long.

Have a Super Week All!!!

Big Snow Storm on East Coast

December 18th, 2009

I’m just going to tap into PSUSyr5 post here and say WOW I’m already dreading updating the stats come the end of this storm. Normally ot takes about 2 hours and that’s not even peaking at states like Virginia and so on. Like Stephen mentioned most likely there will be a change up in the top 10 and big changes below the top 10 with some of the more unlikely US cities being in it :) As I’m typing I think several airports have pretty much closed up shop for the night with many more to follow. There are also Blizzard warnings for several places. Chances are that there will be plenty of cities that will be getting or going above their entire seasonal totals for the year. Hey, Send us any pictures your willing to share with the rest of the US ;)

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

As of this moment, the several Atlantic states are under a winter storm warning. This includes most of North Carolina and Virginia, all of Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey and West Virginia, and portions of Connecticut, New York and *gulp* Pennsylvania. Looks like the World forecast is sure to be a complete bust this week. Let the bashing onslaught begin. Regardless, it should really jumble up the Top 10 cities as several areas are expected to get about a foot and a half of snow from this system.

Have a great weekend everyone!

The Top 10 Snowiest Cities Updated

December 11th, 2009

Well kind of updated that is. I spent a good part of the day and night trying to find the snow stats for the rest of the cities I didn’t look up yet. Fort Collins, Co and Lakewood, Colorado are definitely going to be the 2 cities to try and push of the snow mountain. Denver has quite a lead but not big enough in my opinion to last too long in the number 3 spot unless they can keep adding.

There are probably about 15 cities after the top three that have finally started to turn on their snow makers and with that last storm that covered a good part of the US some of the cities I didn’t expect to make the jump so fast. Yeah, get use to the run on sentences here :) Des Moines, Iowa and Grand Rapids, Michigan sledded into 4th and 5th place. Thank God for the Weather Channel because they always are in the thick of the snow where ever it’s falling and at least gives me a clue as to where to start. They had some good shots Des Moines when they had some blizzard warnings up along with several other spots.

One of the cool things with this wacky weather we’ve been having is that from the stats I have so far 7 of the cities in the top 10 are from all different states. No doubt this contest will be spread out across the US. Look for as frequent of updates as possible because things are changing rapidly as far as the weather goes.

Have a Super Day Everyone!
