The snow stats have been updated as of April 30th! Read below about calling it a wrap!

I’m still trying to make sure we call this contest right and have had a couple of conversations with some people from Noaa at a couple different weather stations. From what I gathered is that if the city isn’t coming up with snow stats on NOAA the chances are there isn’t a weather station for that city and whatever comes in is probably from snow spotters. I’ve said it sever time how much I respect what snow spotters do and the time they put into it but we are going to go with cities that have NOAA weather stations.

I talked with Chad Gimmestad from the Colorado NOAA station and got some really good input from him. Thanks Chad for taking the time I’ve come up with a date that should be safe enough to call the contest or hopefully safe enough to anyways. We wanted to go with May 1st which is when we call the smaller snow contest at goldensnoball.com but seeing how the national snow contest involves many more cities we have decided to extend it just a little longer. Colorado and a couple of other states are pretty much the last to receive snowfall so we decided to base it on that. Snow is in the forecast for some of the Colorado cities depending on the temps for the next day or two and it could turn out to be a significant snow event. With that said, the date is picked and it is soon so stay tuned is all I can say while I keep working the phones to make sure we get it right. Of course there is always a chance we don’t and look like the normal fools we really are trying to have a fun contest.

Cheers and Have a great week all.

The title pretty much says it all. I just did a top 10 update and only one change in the lineup. I don’t see Syracuse adding any new snow in the near future so the title is up for the taking if you can pile on some new snow.

As for my new found friends in Flagstaff, AZ, I think we have enough posts in the comments section including one from my darling Daughter who figured she would just keep it going and going even though she lives in Oswego, NY Most will be just overlooked for the fact that the contest is 100,000 population or more. If I have the time I will try and give some of th smaller cities that got decent snow this season recognition come the end of the season I’ll try and get a full update in sometime this week.

Lakewood and Fort Collins are on the move with the latest storm to hit Colorado. They both climbed several spots on the snow mountain. The weather in Syracuse has been pretty decent so they better start getting a little nervous about winning the first national snow contest for a city with a population of 100,000 or more.

It’s still just a matter of a storm or two for just about any of the top 10 Golden Snow Globe cities to move to the top. The North East has had some unusually warm weather with perhaps some snow in the forecast for early next week but as of now it doesn’t look like much. I’m still trying to find some snow stats for a few of the Colorado cities and will be contacting NOAA to see if they have them. Come the end of this seasons contest I will also talk with the National Weather Service to make sure we have the right city as the winner. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, this season is kind of a test run to get all the bugs out and I have several plans to make the contest more fun and interesting for the future seasons. Suggestions are always welcome.

Have a Great Week All and GO CUSE!!!! NCAA that is

I had some personal stuff going on and I’m sorry about the lack of updates all. They should be more regular from here on through the rest of the snow season. I really thought I did an update on the top ten snowy cities after the last storm but when I checked today turns out I didn’t

All of the top 10 stayed but there were some changes in the lineup. Erie, pa is hanging tough and Rochester jumped a couple of spots on the snow mountain. March has been know to have some decent storms and this contest is far from over so Syracuse better not start counting their snowballs yet

That said I think it is time to cut some of the cities out of the updates on the all of the US cities page. I was thinking maybe knocking it down to about 25 – 30 cities. Any thoughts on that???

Hey, have a super day all!

I just did a full update and if the stats are right Baltimore is now king of the snow mountain. Just typing that made me have to take another look at the stats. A city from Maryland, the state that has one of my favorite vacation places (Ocean City) that on average has about a foot of snow at this time is leading if my stats are correct. I’m loving it Ummm, as long as they don’t hold the lead for too long that is

Here is a good article by Frank Roylance who is a reporter for The Baltimore Sun that puts into perspective as to what is going on in Baltimore, Maryland snow wise! http://weblogs.marylandweather.com/2010/02/so_far_this_winter_6_feet_7_in.html

Washington, DC has made it into the top 10 even after the switch from Dulles to National. Most likely I’ll be talking to someone from NOAA in the next week or so to see what they think about the locations and so on.

The Pa. cities are cashing in big time with these snow storms with 3 of them in the top ten. Erie, Pa I expected to be a tough competitor but I didn’t think Pittsburgh and no way Philadelphia to be in there. My brother lives in Philly and in the last 2 days he must have called here about 10 times rubbing it in

If you have any cool snow pictures you can send them to comments@goldensnowglobe.com and I’ll post them here on the site. Just let me know where the pics were taking and any other info you want to add.

Here in Syracuse all is pretty quiet with just snow showers in the forecast and I won’t even begin to tell those of you in DC, PA and Maryland how jealous I am right now. That just doesn’t sound right either!

Have a Great Snowy Day All!

First off I’m sorry about the lack of updates but a member of my family has been really sick. I’ll try to get at least the top 10 snowiest cities updated more frequently like at least every other day and as time permits with the full update.

Who would have thought that at this time in the season that Baltimore, MD, Philadelphia, PA and Washington, DC would be where they are right now in the snow lineup. It gets even better or worse depending how you look at it. There are a couple of storms going on right now and if all falls in place there could be a good chance that a couple of those cities may be in the lead for the snowiest city in the United States in the next few days. Pretty cool IMO

All 3 of the cities are about 50 inches above their normal snowfall for this time in the season give or take a little. I was expecting or at least hoping for a good snow contest for the first season but now way did I see it playing out like this. Syracuse is still king of the snow mountain but the snow race has a lot of snow days to go and right now the top prize as snowiest big city (pop 100,000) is up for grabs. Hopefully we’ll have more frequent updates from here on!

Have a Great Week All!

No doubt this was the most boring update since we started keeping track of the snowiest cities. No changes in the top 10 and only a few changes for the rest of the US cities. It’s looking like some changes may be coming weather wise but it may depend on whether it’s rain, snow or a mix. A good part of the northeast is seeing rain and a mix right now as I type including where I’m from, the Syracuse area.

To the north west I’m hearing about several storm systems moving in one after another but again it will depend on the temperatures and where they hit. Could be a chance for the Colorado cities to start up again. Let’s hope that the Arctic air come back and gets some of the lakes cranking out the LES sooner rather than later.

1:00 AM – Wednesday - OK, I just updated the top 10 snowiest cities and so far no changes since earlier. I’m looking at the snow stats and remember this post is coming from the Oracle of the Syracuse Golden Snowball snow stats so I am definitely puling for the Northeast cities verses the rest of the country. I will and do try to keep it unbiased though. Syracuse (Woo Oho – see unbiased) so far is in the lead but there are several cities that have some of us in the NY area a little worried

I think the city that scares me personally the most of becoming the King of The Snow Mountain for the first ever Golden Snow Globe Award is probably Erie,Pa. They have shown over and over again that they are definitely a worthy competitor when it comes to piling up the snow.

Other cities to pay a ton of attention to are the other snow belt cities in New York. Buffalo and Rochester! They are due to overtake Syracuse and it’s just a matter of time. It’s been several years but this could be the snow season that one of them skates to the top.

Michigan has been on a roll. Several of the cities around the Great Lakes seem to be catching up pretty quick to the top cities. The big factor in my opinion right now is which way the wind blows and how much of the lakes start to freeze over. With the cold temps the last couple of weeks the chances are that Lake Erie may be pretty much almost frozen over which may stop the Buffalo and surrounding cities from compensating on the lake effect snow but never count them out.

This being the first National Snow contest ever and me being the clueless person that I am when it comes to Geography I think I’ll have to read up on how the other great lakes freeze up, if they even do in the cold months. Either that or ya all can clue me in on it. Feel free to leave comments about the weather in your neck of the woods.

Hey, Have a Super Day All!

Early – 1/12 - I’ll post a summary of this latest update later but as it stands Fort Collins, Co has finally been knocked down the snow mountain I think for the first time this season. I’m sure they will be back though along with several of the other cities. My bet is there are going to be several lead changes in the next several weeks. Stay Tuned and Congrats to Syracuse for taking the king of the mountain. For now anyways !
