It’s officially unofficial that the snowiest city in the United States is Syracuse, NY. Lets just hope I didn’t blow it this time. Remember the Washington, DC Big Oooops Anyways I’ve looked and looked, talked and talked to several people and everything is pointing to Syracuse being the King of the snow mountain for the 2009 – 2010 snow season. The stats below are as of earlier today which is May 15th and this date seems to be a good cutoff date for the National Snow Contest. A couple of the bigger Colorado cities did just get some snow added to their totals but it isn’t enough to knock off Da Cuse. If anyone out there has any info on a snowier big city than Syracuse, pop 100,000 or more please let us know by emailing us at comments@goldensnowglobe.com .

I did talk to a couple of people from a couple of stations for NOAA, the national weather service and they both seemed to also think the stats should be right. That said there is always that chance that we have missed a city this being the first annual Golden Snow Globe contest and kind of a test run for the first season. Below you can see what we came up with for the top 10 snowiest BIG cities. There is no doubt that it was pretty time consuming but the fun comments from all of you and just the competition of all of the cities competing for bragging rights made it worthwhile. Being the first season of the contest all I can say is I hope I got it right with calling is Syracuse, NY.

Steven, our Golden Snow Cast master did an awesome job with his forecasts. I think he came out at being something like 90 + percent right which is pretty good. Hey he is looking for a job in meteorology, forecasting, mapping, burger flipping or whatever you have for him. OK, I’m kidding about the burger flipping kind of jobs but he is a graduate of State College and he knows his stuff. Thanks Steven for all the time and hard work you put into the site this season.

More to come on how the snow season went and look for some improvements come next season including getting a lot of the populations up to date and hopefully some cool contests and prizes for our visitors. There were a lot of good suggestions from quite a few people and we will be adding some of them next season. Thanks again to all of you and to those of you who made this a fun contest by posting and emailing.

The snow stats have been updated as of April 30th! Read below about calling it a wrap!

I’m still trying to make sure we call this contest right and have had a couple of conversations with some people from Noaa at a couple different weather stations. From what I gathered is that if the city isn’t coming up with snow stats on NOAA the chances are there isn’t a weather station for that city and whatever comes in is probably from snow spotters. I’ve said it sever time how much I respect what snow spotters do and the time they put into it but we are going to go with cities that have NOAA weather stations.

I talked with Chad Gimmestad from the Colorado NOAA station and got some really good input from him. Thanks Chad for taking the time I’ve come up with a date that should be safe enough to call the contest or hopefully safe enough to anyways. We wanted to go with May 1st which is when we call the smaller snow contest at goldensnoball.com but seeing how the national snow contest involves many more cities we have decided to extend it just a little longer. Colorado and a couple of other states are pretty much the last to receive snowfall so we decided to base it on that. Snow is in the forecast for some of the Colorado cities depending on the temps for the next day or two and it could turn out to be a significant snow event. With that said, the date is picked and it is soon so stay tuned is all I can say while I keep working the phones to make sure we get it right. Of course there is always a chance we don’t and look like the normal fools we really are trying to have a fun contest.

Cheers and Have a great week all.

I still need to get some stats for a few cities that have me concerned. Mainly some of the Colorado cities not listed here because I haven’t been able to find snow stats on them plus a couple of others. In other words I’m being a sissy man in calling Syracuse the winner just yet. I will get a hold of everyone I need to and make an announcement next week. Yeah I know I’m a wimp but I would rather get it right for the first annual national snow contest for cities with a population of 100,000 or more. Just a bit longer.

Cheers, Patrick

It’s been tough trying to get an update in with the decent weather we have been having. I just cut the lawn yesterday and I don’t think too many of us are thinking about snow right now. It’s getting close to that time to wrapping up the contest for snowiest city in the United States with a population of 100,000 or more. We still have some stats to check before the contest ends which is the last day of April and I don’t think it’s a lock yet seeing how some cities are still getting snow.

Here in the northeast it’s been pretty decent with just a trace of snow last Friday. Most of the days have been 50 + with a few days in the 80’s which is very unusual for April. With the wacky way this winter has been I’m a little nervous as to what the summer will bring across the United States. Only a handful had any snow to report this update so unless one of the cities near the top start piling it on I’ll most likely do another update early next week. If I see some of the top 10 cities are getting some snow I’ll do an update sooner.

The title pretty much says it all. I just did a top 10 update and only one change in the lineup. I don’t see Syracuse adding any new snow in the near future so the title is up for the taking if you can pile on some new snow.

As for my new found friends in Flagstaff, AZ, I think we have enough posts in the comments section including one from my darling Daughter who figured she would just keep it going and going even though she lives in Oswego, NY Most will be just overlooked for the fact that the contest is 100,000 population or more. If I have the time I will try and give some of th smaller cities that got decent snow this season recognition come the end of the season I’ll try and get a full update in sometime this week.

Have a Super Week All!

Lakewood and Fort Collins are on the move with the latest storm to hit Colorado. They both climbed several spots on the snow mountain. The weather in Syracuse has been pretty decent so they better start getting a little nervous about winning the first national snow contest for a city with a population of 100,000 or more.

It’s still just a matter of a storm or two for just about any of the top 10 Golden Snow Globe cities to move to the top. The North East has had some unusually warm weather with perhaps some snow in the forecast for early next week but as of now it doesn’t look like much. I’m still trying to find some snow stats for a few of the Colorado cities and will be contacting NOAA to see if they have them. Come the end of this seasons contest I will also talk with the National Weather Service to make sure we have the right city as the winner. Like I’ve mentioned in the past, this season is kind of a test run to get all the bugs out and I have several plans to make the contest more fun and interesting for the future seasons. Suggestions are always welcome.

Have a Great Week All and GO CUSE!!!! NCAA that is

I just did an update on all of the cities. Not much change in the top 10 other than Baltimore had a correction to their totals and lost a little. Don’t ya hate when that happens. No doubt it’s been a dry spell as far as snow goes with only a handful or so adding to their snow totals. Here in the Syracuse and CNY area the temps are looking to stay in the 50’s or close to it for several days. I’m still not convinced that we’re all done with the snow. These are what I call the teaser days of winter which always make us think about Spring but then we get hit with some more snow. Of course I’ll take the sunny and 50 degree weather while it’s here

As to all of the posts about Flagstaff, Arizona. I know that you’re getting some decent amount of snow and if it wasn’t for the 50 degree weather here in the North East I would probably be jealous. As PSUSyr5 mentioned this contest is for cities with a population of 100,000 or more. Nothing against the smaller cities but that’s just the way it is. The same with Marquette, Mich who always gets hit good. Ok, maybe we can put Marquette in seeing how they are a Big East team I’m kidding but both cities should be mentioned and you are now. Just a note that the chances are there are several other smaller cities with more snow than you and all of the bigger cities. Fulton, NY is just one city that comes to mind and they are having just a so-so season.. http://www.tsforecast.com/seasonalsnowfall.html

Have a Great Week All!

I had some personal stuff going on and I’m sorry about the lack of updates all. They should be more regular from here on through the rest of the snow season. I really thought I did an update on the top ten snowy cities after the last storm but when I checked today turns out I didn’t

All of the top 10 stayed but there were some changes in the lineup. Erie, pa is hanging tough and Rochester jumped a couple of spots on the snow mountain. March has been know to have some decent storms and this contest is far from over so Syracuse better not start counting their snowballs yet

That said I think it is time to cut some of the cities out of the updates on the all of the US cities page. I was thinking maybe knocking it down to about 25 – 30 cities. Any thoughts on that???

Hey, have a super day all!

I figured it would be worthwhile for me to step out of my usual role and make this post regarding a few issues.

First off, the lack of updates. There is a post over on the New York State Golden Snowball site regarding that. As another note, I am not an admin, nor do I want to be at this time, so I can’t make the updates either. I’ve been fairly busy with work and online classes, so even if I was able to make updates, I am not sure how often those would have occurred. I will be done with my latest course by the end of the month, so with any luck I’ll be able to make more posts at that time.

Also, I’ve noticed comments about Flagstaff, AZ. Yes, they have more snow than Syracuse. However, part of the criteria for making the list is having a population size of 100,000 or more. Their population a bit short of that, so that is why they are not on the list. Pat will have to explain why the threshold is in place, instead of using all NWS sites, when that time comes. I have an idea of why, but it would be better if it came from him, especially if my thought is not correct. For now, part of what I’d like to do when I’m done with my course is to have a ranking of the cities that are short of the threshold, but do have National Weather Service reports. I’d also use reports from stations that aren’t used on our official listing, like Dulles for Washington, DC. I figure it could be similar to the former WOW contest on the Golden Snowball site.

With this being the first year of this contest, we’re all working out the kinks. Things haven’t quite gone as planned on my end, as I would have liked to taken more of a reporting role like I did earlier with the first snow storm that hit the mid-Atlantic states and snow in Arizona. Perhaps I’ll be able to do that more next season when my program should be completed. We’re using everything that has happened this season as a learning experience to make the future seasons’ contests go as smoothly as possible.

Thanks for your understanding in all this and have a great week!

I just did a quick top 10 update on the snowiest cities. I figure no sense doing a full update until the storm thats ready to hit the North East blows through. Here in Syracuse it’s just a storm watch but hopefully that will change and the storm will shift a little. Right now Philly is looking like the place to be once again for some good snow totals. Can they make it to the top of the snow mountain and bump Da’Cuse down from it? Will Pitt or Erie maybe Rochester pile on the snow. Stay tuned because there could be a new leader in the next day or two.

Have a Super Night All and remember See Snow Drive Slow. Take it easy
